My room was in the "garden area". The garden area is very, very beautiful. Small brick walkways lined with colorful plants lead to your room. By the time I got from the lobby to my room I was already relaxed by the pleasant surroundings. The room was large with a king size bed. Large bathroom and shower. I stayed in Aug. during the rainy season with temps around 85 F. The A/C seemed a bit tired and I left it on while I was out. To leave the A/C on while your gone you need to remove the key from the fob and leave the fob in its holder which activates the lights and ac. If you stay during the hot season this under preforming A/C could be a downer. The pool was larger than most and very clean. You can easily walk to the clock tower in the center of town in 15 minutes. I would stay here again.

Room Tip: The garden rooms are quite.

We stayed at the La Luna hotel last week and were pleasantly surprised but there were also some rather unpleasant surprises.

Our rate included Breakfast and dinner vouchers.

Arriving was easy, as we were driving around Chiang Rai the directions given were spot on and we never got lost once.

Checking in was very straight forward and our luggage was brought from the car to the chalet by two very pleasant porters. The news-papers from the lobby which we grabbed not having read much international news recently were three days old.

To get to your room you have to walk through some very lushly planted somewhat wild gardens with many palm trees. In the midst of this they have a large bed of plastic orchids which is somewhat out of sync. In the main a nice informal setting.

The chalet style rooms arranged more or less around a swimming pool were large clean and pleasant . Obviously this hotel has seen better times but the room was a nice surprise. We weren't looking for six star resort as we were travelling around in a car and spent very little actual time in the hotel. We had just been staying in Chiang Mai at the Rachamankha hotel so were very surprised to find a nice large room not a tiny one we had at Rachamankka for more than double the price, a very satisfactory bed (unlike before) and a pleasant setting. Only comments on the room was that the sheets and covers had a few small stains but otherwise it was perfect for the price and we slept extremely well. Nice to see and drink bottled water in glass, it was complimentary, it's far nicer and healthier than plastic bottled water which in the tropics especially turns nasty very quickly.

On the down side the food was terrible absolutely horrible no question.

The breakfast buffet was to die from not for. Nothing was freshly prepared, everything was the lowest possible quality and grade and the selection very poor, both the Western and Asian food. For example the jams all two of them were that extremely artificial stuff coloured like what I expect napalm to be, iridescent pink and orange, the bread white only and sweet with the texture off cake, the meats like the sausage were just too horrible looking to even attempt. The worst items were the cooked ones, congealed fried eggs that looked like they had been made a week before, rubbery and stale. English is not best understood but thats not a problem however when i tried to get two freshly fried eggs this was an instant problem and I was served up two ice cold congealed eggs waiting in store to replenish the ones already languishing, there seems there was no cook. We travel with our own coffee so this was no problem as we had in the room but I tried some and it was very cold along with everything else but tasted OK.

We threw away our vouchers and ate out the next morning down the road, there is a very nice breakfast place with decent food and coffee but its a drive away not a casual stroll.

Dinner was a little better this was served in another restaurant, better in that everything was hot and freshly made but not nice anyway. A lot of bone and grizzle and hardly any meat the curries weren't up to scratch and everything was just generally poor quality. We threw away our dinner vouchers too and ate somewhere else.

The swimming pool is nice but as with many in South East Asia the water was warm which isn't nice when the temps are so high, but it was good to get wet at least after a long days driving. We ordered two cocktails at the pool on the phone as there is no pool attendant or staff mine was a gin and tonic which came as a gin and soda water and extremely strong, there were three of them as we were told it was happy hour? Gin and soda water is horrible however my friend drank all three and got drunk as a skunk as he had a rum and coke as well just two of them as we were told it was happy hour? A bit random but they were cheap and some of us were happy.

I think if you want a decent quality bed and a good room for really not that very much this is the place.

I don't know though how this hotel gets three and a half stars it's an honest two stars at the most on any international scale. If it wasn't for the room being completely satisfactory it would be a complete dive. I also think if the food was only half decent it would be a very good three star hotel and excellent value.

Room Tip: Rooms seem to be all much the same, though a pool view gives you a bit more feeling of space to loo...

Fabulous hotel and lovely surroundings. The room we stayed was of a very high standard it was large and very comfortable. The shower room was large and spacious. The bed was very comfortable and big. The surrounding area was very picturesque. Would recommend.

Room Tip: I would chose a deluxe room, well worth the extra money.

This resort is not a high rise building but arranged rows of chalets/bungalows in beautiful well kept gardens and a pool. The superior chalet is big with a "super" king size bed. The pillow and mattress were very comfortable. The bathroom was nicely decorated. However no attached bath tub. The resort gave free internet access in the rooms which worked well and also provided TV with a few satellite channels. The reception staffs could not converse well in English and can be rather rude. For example, they insisted of charging another THB600 for additional bed for my below 12 years old daughter when we say do not want it. At the end of the arguement, the reception staff told us rudely that they will still charge us even we do not want the additional bed!! How undiplomatic. Breakfast buffett spread was good with Western and Chinese food offerred. Overall it is a good hotel to stay in.

Laluna has beautiful gardens, friendly and helpful staff and a great pool. Unfortunately, the rooms need renovating, the beds need replacing (our room smelled like urine when we arrived and the smell never quite left). We had to keep asking for bathroom toiletries, towels were thin and sometimes stained and the room was sparsely furnished. However, the cheerful staff and the fact that we were there for Chiang Rai, not for Laluna, meant that we still enjoyed our stay. Laluna was not too far from town and we walked everywhere. Chiang Rai has a lively night market - try the hotpots in the Thai "food court" at the market - excellent food and a great experience! We would probably opt to pay a little more for better accommodation next time though.
