“Definitely worth a stop”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 4, 2013

I've read quite a few reviews less than complimentary about a stop in Sop Ruak. My family (mum, dad and boys aged 6, 5 and 11 months) stopped for a few hours and had a really good time. An interesting day market and a few decent places to stop for drinks/coffee. We also took a (very touristy) boat trip to the three ploints of the triangle on the river, including a stop at the villaghe in the "special" economic zone in Laos. We didn't buy anything but still had a good look around.

“Terrific views of the Golden Triangle”

A very evocative place in history and throw in the Mekong river as well. But totally overrun by the usual Thai tourist tatty stuff - but ignore all that. Well worth a visit.

“Wow! Pictures do not do this justice!”

This is a huge Buddha unlike any I have ever seen (and if you have traveled around Southeast and Central Asia you have seen quite a few). The colors, the seated position looking out over the Golden Triangle with its benevolent gaze, the other deities represented all come together for one unique experience. We were there in the afternoon and stayed around until twilight where the lights and the colors were really beautiful...even enchanting.

“Very touristy without much to see”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 25, 2012

This is a very touristy place and not a Thai cultural experience. Although it's nice to look out and see where the borders of Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos converge, I don't see why you would want to spend much time here.

“Definitely a box-ticker only”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 19, 2012

Here the Ruak and Mekong rivers merge and the borders of Laos, Burma and Thailand meet. Historically it was once a very important location with links to the Silk Road but now it is a big tourist attraction that lacks any real cultural character.

Its definitely a place to tick off your list and you will be able to see the giant golden Buddha sitting on his boat, visit the Hall of Opium and House of Opium to learn about the opium trade which the region was once most famous for. You can also take a boat trip and take pictures by the river. You will find more upmarket accomodation here as well. Thats about it.
