“interesting look at the peoples of the "Golden Triangle"”

Modest two-room museum. The captions and posters (all in English) are worth reading, particularly about the history of opium production in the area. The information about the various tribes and their traditions is a little more scarce, but the objects on display are worth a look. Note that their tours to hill tribe villages claim to be non-exploitive and contribute to the livelihood of the villagers themselves.

“Small but informative.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 6, 2010

Museum provides an overview of the various Hill Tribes, somewhat useful if you'll be spending any time among them. Good introductory, though somewhat biased, narrated slideshow about the variety of peoples, where they came from, and their distinctives. I was the only person in the museum the day I went, but the employees were pretty aloof and uncommunicative, even though they spoke English. Informative display on the history of opium production and a modest gift shop. I saw everything in an hour. No photos allowed. Why, I can't imagine. It wasn't that special, but still worth a quick stop to learn about Thailand's minority populations.

“Best single site to learn about the hill tribes!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 2, 2005

We visited the museum one morning in May, 2005, and spent several hours. We not only saw everything but we also booked a tour for the next day there, feeling comfortable that the fees paid would go to the tribes and that the tour guide would be respectful of the people we visited. The guide was excellent, a member of the Lisu tribe. We asked him to take us on a second trip the following day.
We also enjoyed lunch at Cabbages and Condoms, just below the museum.
For the four of us it was the single best destination in Chaing Rai!
