Like Bangkok, Chiang Rai has no shortage of very affordable accommodation but do not think modern, hip, artistic, classy hotels like their urban counterpart.Chiang Rai is still very undeveloped especially their tourism and transport infrastructure, therefore standard of accommodation are still "amateurish" due to the lack of training and manpower.
I stayed in Chiang Rai for around 4 weeks and would like to share my experiences and views of some of the places I stayed. It seems there is a price war in this business here especially the small scale boutique hotels, service appartments and guesthouses and they all range between 350baht for 1 star from 500-700 for 2 stars.
Koko Hut Resort is my favorite pick among 5 other i stayed which I hope to add to tripadvisor.I booked 5 nights not knowing what to expect ,except some feature pictures in Agoda website and one misearable review.I was very desperate because most accommodations are full in the month end of dec. Many accommodations are family-run and Koko Hut is no exception but the only exception is their kindness and generosity to their guests and to me. To begin, the cottage is very clean, simple but modern designed. The bedroom small but spacious and functionable with a wonderful spacious, bright, very clean bathroom with aromotherapeutic toiletries, chean towels and had towels included. I very much enjoy sitting within the resort compound and there is also a sunbed in the porch for every cottage where u can read and enjoy the trees and the sun. Travellers who wants privacy and not being so close to other guests and their noise, this is the PERFECT place. You wont hear the slamming of doorsinconsiderate, noisy guest who stays above or nxt door and the crowd as the cottage is apart from each other.
As for the location, being a little furthur than many accommodation that is within the centre of Chiang Rai,Koko Hut is still not far as it may seemed.I am 44yo and I am able to cycle out to the Sanhongnoi Road where u can get good, cheap food less than US$1 and do your laundry at US$2-3 depending on the load.
Chiang Rai public transport is close to non existant so tavellers are better to be able to ride a motorbike, drive or cycle (if u r physically fit) no matter how close you are to the city.(taxi only available on booking and tuk tuk are available in very limited areas)
The owners Pad and Se take good care of their guests accommodating to all the requests the best they could and never asked for extra charges when guests exceed the maximum limit of occupancy to a room. They even accommodate guests free use of their personal appliances and thier kitchen gladly.
Knowing I am alone and only have my bicycle with nowhere to go,Pad would share their meals with me and Se would drive me out whenever she can and show me the way around. She even took me to a local homemade ice cream treat together with her 78yo mother. They have an 8yo,over weight poodle named Mocha which i grew so fond of. She is a harlmess old poodle so no need to be defensive if she don't greet you with a waggy tail.If you want to be her friend, just give her a good massage and she is all yours..haha...
Oh, a little mention on the beds, they are 5 feet long and queen sized so put that into
consideration. Apart from that, a lovely place with lovely people. i will be back once they have rooms available.
