Formerly the Chiang Rai Inn, this recently refurbished hotel is designed with the Lanna-style architecture. We stayed during low season so there were so few guests at the property that we were often the only ones wandering in the lobby area and breakfast room. Nestled in a quiet commercial/residential part of town, it still took a long 15 minutes to get to the central market area and bus terminal. Nearby businesses include a mini mart next door and a 7-11/gas station down the block. There is an elementary school 3 doors away and the loudspeakers may cause annoyance to some in the wee morning...Thai's apparently love their loudspeakers.
Our room was spacious, relatively clean, and had a mini bar fridge that came with two free bottles of water. The washroom had a good air fan (uncommon in our other rooms in Thailand) but the shower took skill to use because it did not have a shower curtain so water splashed onto the tiled floor. Bed was firm yet comfortable. Clean, white bed linens that appeared to be changed in between guests (very important!). TV unit was large and flat screened. Didn't watch any TV so can't comment about the lack of English channels. Ample closet/storage space. Two wicker chairs and small glass table. Furnishing were basic so do not expect luxurious teak furniture or fine linens. Despite being assigned to the ground floor, we were not bothered by outside noise. One complaint was the the bugs (ants, mosquitoes, etc) that freely entered our room through the crevice between the door and door frame. Another small complaint was the room assignment. Having booked through booking.com, we may have been offered a sub-par room even though the vacancy on those days were below 50%. Had we stayed in a higher floor, the number of bugs entering our room may have been reduced. For a two nighter, I didn't bother with requesting for another room.
Staff were friendly and the manager was very professional and his English proficiency was very good. Freebie breakfast was served in a separate, restaurant like room adjacent to the property. The staff serving breakfast did not comprehend English very well but were eager to please.
Wireless internet was complimentary but sometimes spotty. Air con unit was quiet and controllable through a hand held remote. The property grounds were well cared for and the lobby area was charming with rustic looking furniture and cute curios dotted along the walls filled with Thai dolls or other decorative items. There is a free desktop computer for guest use but no printer.
Overall I was pleased with our stay and would recommend this hotel to others. Great value if you could book this hotel for $30US or less.
