We are a family of 2 adults and 2 kids 10+12. Suwannee picked us up in her jeep and took us to the local market where we had coffee and discussed the day, We shopped at the local stalls which was a lot of fun and Suwannee explanations made it interesting. We took all the ingredients back to her nice house with a huge kitchen big enough for all of us. We spent the whole after having lots of fun making lots of different dishes. Suwannee made it easy and very enjoyable for all of us. We had a ball.

overall it was very good and Suwannee is a nice person, who is really interested to tell the people something about her country. Especially the market visit was great. Small group!

There's a reason that this is the #1 activity in Chiang Rai! Suwannee does an excellent job. From pick-up at our hotel to the tour she took us on in subsequent days, we enjoyed every minute! We took a cooking class one day, and we started the day with a market visit. At this point in our month-long trip, we had taken 2 cooking classes (in Lao and in Cambodia), and our 2 hour market trip was outstanding. We learned about ingredients, strange foods, customs, and more. Suwanee is easy to understand, and her easy manner and her love of Thai cuisine is infectious. She is a well-traveled person, and her life experiences also add to the entire day's enjoyment and learning experience.

Our group was 5 people, from varying backgrounds and ages. We all enjoyed the market visit, then we returned to her home (that was a real plus; to be in a HOME...) where we learned about ingredients and techniques, and then we made a number of dishes. While at the market, I had asked about something for sale (ant larvae), so first we made an omelette using them, and tasted it (not bad!). We then made the traditional papaya salad (loved it!), and a few more dishes. She was always careful to ask about how hot we wanted a dish, and each of us then tailored the spices to accommodate our desires. Each of us cooked on our own at a station in her kitchen. Honestly, we could have stayed longer and chatted, and I was sad to see the day end later in the afternoon. We used 'her' taxi driver to take us to the White Temple and then back to our hotel, so we could fit in a bit more sightseeing in the day.

On the next day, we used the taxi driver that Suwannee recommended to take us up north to the Golden Triangle area for a day of sightseeing, including seeing the border towns and the Opium Museum (worked out better than hiring a tour company for this).

We also had Suwannee, instead of the tourist desk at our hotel, take us on a private tour on athe next day (worked out quite well, and was much less $$ than a group tour through our hotel!). We went first on a boat trip down the river to an Elephant Camp, we ended up riding an elephant, had a lunch, then went up to see the Hill Tribes. She drove us in the comfort of her SUV, and she provided a commentary throughout. We stopped at some roadside stands for fresh pineapple and bananas along the way. I'm so happy we went with her, and we really enjoyed being with Suwannee. She is a real gem of a person, and her suggestions and direction were valuable, and made our visit to Chiang Rai much more enjoyable!

Don't even think about NOT taking this class! Email her early to make sure you have a day reserved- and do it early in your stay in CR, so that you can benefit from her suggestions for your day's activities on subsequent days. She totally recommended museums, shopping, and restaurants for our remaining days that made our visit great! Check out her Facebook page to see more pictures of people having fun in her class (thaicookingclasschiangrai)!

Suwannee's cooking class was definitely the highlight of my trip to Chiang Rai. I learned so much more than cooking from Suwannee as she led us through the market introducing us to new foods and delightful people in the market. Come with an empty stomach because you will prepare and eat some of the best food you have ever tasted!

I can only confirm what the others commentators already said. Suwannee is not only offering an excellent cooking class and interesting tours, but she provides a complete experience and education about Northern Thailand, different tribes, Thai tradition and culture. I learned more in those days than reading all my travel books before. Suwannee speaks excellent English, is extremely well organized and welcomes everyone like a friend. After her cooking class and hiking tour we decided to stay four more days in Chiang Rai to explore the area further. This experience was invaluable and a "must do" for new visitors to Chiang Rai in the first few days.
