When I first explored things to do in Chiang Rai, I had included the "White Temple" purely for its crazy, absurd & outrageous gaudiness. But after researching the Architect & Artist, the fact that he built this for Budha out of his own pocket & has trained a further 90 artists, was once a Monk and has degrees from reputable Universities I viewed it differently. He has built a monument in his home province and now thousands come to see it every day from all over the world. It's expanding too.
He reached enlightenment aged 40 and his depictions of the afterlife in his gallery are beautiful.
It reminded me of "build it and they will come". Well they certainly did!!

Wat Rong Khun or the White Temples it has been built in such a way makes it different than other normal temples. The design, color, and the glasses made it really a special temple. I have seen a lot of modern temples in SE Asia but like this one i haven't seen. It's something different.

From inside its very normal, and I hope they will change it to be something special like outside.
Please do not forget to;
- Bring Your Camera.
- Dress well. (I have seen the staff were providing some women's with something like scarf to cover their bodies).
- Take a look at the Golden building when you finish from the Temple :))

Enjoy.

It's easy to get to by public transport, just hop on a bus from the bus station, and flag one down from the side of the road near the temple when you want to return to town. I suggest you go early because it gets quite crowded. It's very pretty and symbolic, and the mural in the main temple is vivid and memorable!

This unusual modern temple is well worth a visit. We hired a motorbike in Chiang Rai and came here by ourselves, it was really easy to find - south on highway 1 for about 12km, turn right at the traffic lights where you'll see a big picture of the King and also signs to the Wat, after the traffic lights you'll see it on the left, bike parking is before the temple.

It was very busy when we were there with crowds of people filing through to see the main hall and take their photo in front of the pool. Admission is free but you do have to dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered - you can borrow a robe if necessary. A couple of security guards near the bridge were chivvying people along (mainly by shouting at them) to keep a flow going.

There are lots of little details to notice all around, both outside and inside. The wat is still under construction, we saw decoration of the main hall ongoing and a couple of other buildings nearby in different states of completion as well as a new toilet block which looked more or less finished (temporary toilets are available for now). It was interesting to see an exhibit with the influences and plans for the building to the south of the site as well as craftsmen at work. It will be really impressive once everything is complete although I think that's not scheduled to happen until about 2060!

This is an amazing project by one artist. It's whiteness and sparkling mirror trim might appear gaudy to some but you have to admire the artist's dream. It is an on-going project. Truly amazing and well worth a visit.
