“Holy Cow-Great Resort in Chiang Rai”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 6, 2013

This was definitely an oasis on our trip. The grounds were fabulous with a large swimming pool and all situated on a quiet river. Great Italian (go figure) restaurant in the complex. There were several other restaurants, but we couldn't get in. We were angry at ourselves for not doing more homework so that we could have stayed longer. Our room was lovely and had a great view. Definitely recommend!

What a relaxing, luxurious, and all together excellent atmosphere. Service is exceptional, property is pristine, and the entire hotel has a cool, modern but elegant vibe. Stayed here for a two night getaway with my husband in August 2013. For under 150 dollars US we got a top of the line, grand deluxe room. It was absolutely huge and chic...gorgeous without being over the top with just the right touches in black, grey and white. Bed was like heaven and the views from the balcony over the river and quiet pool are lovely. The hotel has great, modern angles and little touches that make it a stand out.

This hotel is an amazing respite after the noise and dust of Chiang Rai, and while it's a bit outside of the city, which had us worried at first, once I actually saw what the city had to offer, I was really glad to be outside in the quiet of the Le Meridien property. The hotel runs a shuttle into town, but once we experienced the small night market and had a look around and some good Thai food, we were ready to head back to our quiet luxury at the hotel.

Breakfast isn't the best I've had in a 5 star in Thailand, but it's still really nice and very fresh, and we found that the Favola Restaurant that everybody raves about deserves the accolades it gets. Excellent meal there, and not at all expensive given the quality and the location. The restaurant is small, though, so even though there were very few guests in the hotel this time of year, we really needed a reservation and were very lucky to get one. People from other hotels travel in to this hotel just to visit this great Italian restaurant.

Service was awesome, as you might expect. We've stayed in plenty of five stars in Thailand (as we live here and like to get away on the weekends when we can), and most of the hotels are very nice, but I would argue that this hotel actually deserves its five star rating. It's a cut above, all at a Chiang Rai price.

We also used the tour office, which was more expensive than if we'd grabbed a guide on the street of course, but the tour was great and very personal.

Overall, we felt very pampered and relaxed for a fairly inexpensive weekend getaway. This hotel is quite a find, and we were really pleased with our stay. Recommend it highly.

Room Tip: Spend the extra money and get the grand deluxe room. Worth it, and it comes with free internet, whi...

We stayed here as part of our 3 weeks in Thailand. We enjoyed the hotel very much. The rooms are spacious, the views along the river are lovely. Breakfast was very nice, sometimes included in the room, sometimes not, so check your reservation on that point.

Staff was friendly and helpful. Unique pool, they have been creative about bringing scenic canals in from the river that blend with the man-made pools. We enjoyed an evening of fine dining at the Italian Restaurant on site. Mosquito repellent was supplied, as we found in much of Thailand's nicer restaurants.

We were within walking distance of a some little local restaurants & bars along the water.

Shuttle service into town was also available.

We recommend!

Booked using Starwood points and was pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to River/Pool View room. Room huge, well appointed . Coffee machine and supplies, ironing board slippers and robes.
Bathroom huge, decor great. Towels rather threadbare and skimpy poor quality supply of soap ,shampoo etc.

Staff efficient and pleasant.

Breakfast a really good buffet for approx US 6. A huge selection of hot and cold items. Really something for everyone.

We ate at Favola twice, On the 15 August , Risotto was divine . Seafood pasta was very good . One complaint dish was served with 2 clams unopened . Seems these young chefs dont know what that indicates as it is a recurring comment.

On the 16th the risotto was really totally different ,portion size was half of the previous night, rice was still crunchy , underseasoned ,just not good.. We immediately realised it had to be a different chef and on enquiry the waiter confirmed this. Consistency is therefore an issue an should be addressed. Waiter did ask us which was better ,however we opted to be polite and answered that both nights were the same.Overall though a good experience.

Parvati Spa was excellent . The therapists were just awesome and prices were good. We went on both evenings for massages.

Overall a good experience.
We did not have any issues with mosquitos . Used the coil on balcony and plug in at night in the room.

Resort is rather spread out so there is a fair bit of walking . Also the spa and Favola are not linked by covered walkways to the main buildings so when it rained and it stormed the one night one invariably gets wet.

For those who do not prebook guides the hotel did have a list of excursions that were not too exhorbitantly priced and there many options.

Staff were extremely friendly, rooms are good and clean, swimming pool was clean and the price was good. OK so it's a little far out of town, but don't let that put you off as transport is readily arranged by the hotel.

A very good and very relaxing resort. Spacious rooms and bathrooms. The pool is a must.
It is located outside the town but a free shuttle bus is offered many times during the day. I will absolutely recommend it.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The resort occupies an idyllic 26-rai site directly on the banks of the Mae Kok River, moments from Chiang Rai town and a one hour drive from the Golden Triangle where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar converge. The resort is set at the heart of beautiful landscaped gardens complete with a tranquil man-made lake and two majestic 100-year-old rain trees. Surrounded by magnificent mountain scenery, the neighbouring community is a jewel waiting to be explored. Nearby attractions include Rai Mae Fah Luang, Le Méridien's chosen UnLock Art site, and Oub Kham Museum which houses a collection of objects from the ancient Lanna kingdom, Myanmar, southwest China, and Vietnam. Nearby attractions include Wat Phra Kaew, the temple that once housed the Emerald Buddha, and the Hill Tribe Education Centre with its fascinating display of tribal artefacts and handicrafts. Boat trips along the Mae Kong River are available from the town of Chiang Khong, with stops along the way at villages of interest. Ethnic groups living in the province include Karen, Lisu, Lahu, Akha, Meo, and Yao, and it is possible to arrange treks into the hill tribe villages with experienced local guides. Mae Sai is 62 kilometres north of Chiang Rai and makes for an interesting day trip. This busy trading post borders Myanmar, and it is possible to cross the bridge to visit the bustling market in Tha Khi Lek. Phu Chi Fa is a spectacular viewpoint. The impressive views are best enjoyed early in the morning, particularly in the cool season when mist covers the valley floor. A highlight to any trip to Chiang Rai is a visit to the Doi Tung Development Project. Started as a royal initiative to help eradicate opium supply, drug use, and rural poverty, the project offers villagers with a practical and sustainable alternative. The project focuses on development, education, training, humanitarian activities, environmental conservation, agriculture, and the production of quality crafts. At the summit of Doi Tung, visitors can visit Phra That Doi Tung, a chedi constructed in 911 A.D and one of the oldest and most sacred sites in northern Thailand. The chedi is said to contain the collarbone of Buddha. Le Méridien Chiang Rai Resort, Thailand is located close to the town centre and a short drive from Chiang Rai Airport. ... more   less
