Pantoorat Mountain lodge is a good base to start when you arrive at Khao Sok - close to the bus stop and away from the noise of the other resorts and bars, the 4 bungalows are basic, concrete, compact, clean and immersed in it's own jungle garden. At the time of our stay an orphaned baby Malaysian sun bear was being nursed back to health in the garden. After Mr Toy showed us round the town in his 4x4 we organised an overnight trip to the North of the lake where we would be most likely to see some wildlife and it's turned out to be the best part of our travels so far.

We may have been lucky but we saw many animals in their natural environment - deer, otters, gibbons, horn bills, king fishers, bison, wild boar, black macaque monkeys, birds of prey and even a baby white elephant. The lake itself is also stunning.

The raft house accommodation at the North of the lake was basic and very unique - run by a family the meals were varied, huge and tasty - we also got to try plants from the jungle. We were the only people there at the time so swimming in the crystal clear bath temperature lake against a backdrop of jungle and limestone rock was fabulous.

Born and raised in Khao Sok, Mr Toy is genuinely enthusiastic about nature, ecologically concious and knows the lake and the land like the back of his hand - he will only do a tour if it's safe and a few years back won an award for rescuing a tourist trapped in a cave when the guides and other tourists were fatally washed away by a flood. He can spot wildlife from a distance like a hawk and will only do tours of up to 4 people as otherwise it gets too noisy to see anything. Having said that when we returned to the main village he took us for a tour of the National Park on foot - he seemed half as enthusiastic and it was a bit pricey for what it was.

All in all a great experience and I would recommend Pantoorat Mountain Lodge and an over night tour of the lake with Mr Toy if it's wildlife you want to see. However, many other tours operate on a larger scale with more of an atmosphere of camaraderie if that's what you prefer and there's a good range of accommodation in the village available to suit all tastes.

Arriving in Khao Sok after a draining bus ride and having all the local touts pushing for our custom, the quietly spoken Mr. Toy (pronounced toe-yee) smiled from afar and offered us a great deal on a double bungalow with a self contained bathroom. After a short drive to the property in his open top 4x4 we unloaded our gear and sat in the huge common area where we received a cool drink each while he unlocked the bungalow, which is only one of 4, so be advised to book early!

We checked in and he took us to a small local restaurant for a hearty, well priced, local feed. He asked if we would like to see around the town and we went on a short tour ending with a fantastic off road experience and a few beers at his mates bar with his nephew, Bon. There we discussed that we would like to do an over night trek into the 160 million year old jungle.
The next day we were off in the long boat, with Toy as our guide, to a small set of raft houses and two days of short treks through leafy undergrowth and an amazing night safari in the long boat. All the while Toy as our guide. This man, he knows the forest and jungle like the back of his hand, can tell you what animal is making any call and whose paw prints are in the soft mud at the side of the river. Not to mention, that when we arrived, my friend was suffering from a terible burn (from a motorcycle exhaust) and after just 3 days of care it was well on its way to being 100%, after some careful jungle treatments.
The next night back at the bungalow we cooked a feast from all the fish we caught and layed back in our hamocks and R.E.L.A.X.E.D!
We have been here for 5 days now (and will be staying at least a couple more) and would be staying longer if we could.
It feels like home.
Toy goes above and beyond for his guests and is so incredibly savvy with the working of the town and the vibes of the jungle there is every reason for you to walk away from his place with a new aspect on the culture and creatures of Khao Sok National Park and the areas surrounding.

Pantoorat Mountain Lodge is run by Mr. Poy (or Toy, something a bit in between). The accommodation is basic, but adorable: a simple cabin with double bed (a bit hard mattress), a bathroom with cold shower and toilet. You don't really miss hot water in Thailand, don't worry. There is also electricity and a good fan. Every cabin also has a porch with a good view. Outside our cabin were several orchids just growing like weeds. The landscaping is really nice, the place was built with nature in mind.
I think usually Mr. Poy cooks in the main lodge, but he was absent while we were there and we were on our own in the town for food. Which worked out fine, it was just a bit of a walk.
Everyone knows Mr. Poy. His family seems to run the town; his nephew took care of us (took us on tours and such) until he got back in town, and when we stopped by the local bar another nephew of his was the bartender. All of the family was very knowledgeable.

Most of all though we REALLY enjoyed the lake tour, run by Pantoorat. We did an overnight tour and wish we'd stayed there for longer- the views are amazing, the food is delicious, the tours are breathtaking, the rafthouses are an incredible way to stay close to nature, if basic in amenities. GO! It was our favorite part of our trip to Thailand.

Oh, and almost forgot to add: bring earplugs if you stay at Pantoorat. They don't believe in cooping roosters around here and they start up about 4am. There is also a karaoke bar close by that blasts music at night. Also we were there for the "weekly market" which started blasting music at 6am. So, yes, definitely earplugs. But a great experience.

These very affordable bungalows are comfortable, quiet, have a little terrace with a nice view and are clean in spite of being in the middle of the jungle.

The ecologically-conscious local owner, Toy, makes you feel at home, cooks for you delicious thai food, takes you around the khao sok national park in his jeep or boat and loves talking about his region. Thanks a lot for the lake trip !!

The hotel is very close to the bus stop which makes it easy to reach and just a walk from the town and park entrance.
