“Excellent family holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2014

We purchased a deal on Deals.com.au for a great package to this hotel which included dinners, massages etc. It exceeded our expectations. We thoroughly enjoyed the hotel. The room was large and modern with the usual amenities. The staff are very friendly and attended to any of our many requests during our stay without any fuss. They treated our daughter like royalty.

The food at the two restaurants was great and not overly priced for a resort either. The buffet breakfast was easily the best I've ever eaten at. Not only did they have the western staples of cereal, eggs, bacon, omelets, toast, beans etc. They had a great selection of Thai breaky options that changed daily. I was a big fan of these.

Hotel gardens are immaculate, the pools are great and the kids love the small waterslide. There is a kids club and it was a bit of a savior for us as we travelled with a 2 year old. There are heaps of things to do in there and our daughter enjoyed it. Older kids might struggle a little though, say above 6 years old (although they did have a couple of play stations in there). They do have a recreation center with books, PC's with internet, pool table and table tennis table, but that is about it for the older kids. I would say this hotel is certainly not for teenagers. They would get bored pretty quickly. it's purely families with younger kids or older couples looking for a relaxing holiday in my opinion.

My wife thoroughly enjoyed the daily massages we received from our deal. As well as the cooking class that was thrown in also. (which is a free lunch as well).

Pretty central to everything and walking distance to good restaurants. There is a fridge in the rooms but it isn't stocked with overpriced items. Instead they opt to let you buy what you need from the store at the front of the hotel (which is a great idea). While the prices at the shop are reasonable, if you walk a couple of hundred meters up the road to the mini mart at the main road, the prices are a lot cheaper. I bought all our drinks from this place to save money.

TIP: the Orchid café at the top of the road does take away food. Great if you have young kids who sleep early and you don't want to order room service.

A relaxing stay for price I do not want to be too negative in this review as we did have a relaxing stay. Purely due to hotel location . Fantastic mountain and sea backdrops. I have set out my points below and i am now very cautious of trip advisor reviews which is why i like to be honest and do understand this is a 4 star hotel but have stayed in a 2 star hotel which i gave wonderful review to as well. But the price was $1000 with a voucher deal including an hour massage each and a free drink daily. So for that price i do not want to be too negative if can help - plus Khao - lak is a town still recovering from the awful tragedy of the 2004 tsunami. So please go to Khao - Lak it is beautiful.

Location: Beautiful and close to khao Lak - a lovely seaside town. A short 10 -15 min walk into town or for 100B hotel transport will drop you in - perfect!

Hotel / Grounds: Immaculate and nice pools but overall appearance of the hotel and grounds sorry to say - soulless like a huge retirement village. The building is quite ugly but thats a personal opinion as i am not a lover of modern buildings others may like this look.

Reception: lovely greeting and very polite

Room: looks nice but really smelt of damp. We reported this as soon as we arrived. Staff very nice and offered to move us but alternative room still had that musty smell. they then offered to refresh the room and gave us a bowl of fruit - kind offer though. However no member of management ever approached us to look at the room (So they can rectify for future guests) and surely we can not be the only guest who have smelt this but have only seen this on one other review. In defence it is rainy season and the building on seafront so this maybe why but room wall has water condensation marks that need to be repainted not a nice greeting. In view that this is a new hotel and if nothing is done or walls not repainted this will be problem in the future. More airflow is needed in the brick - it is a building issue and having looked further at the building work closer - the room appears nice on the surface but on closer inspection rushed and poorly built. Sorry to go on but for me it was a huge issue as the smell never went away although reception staff did make us aware that air conditioning has to be kept on all the time to prevent this. Sadly though you do not want air conditioning on at all times i did though but made no difference really and you just got used to the smell and i actually think it was the air conditioning that was causing the smell. Also the bath water does not drain away from the under tile properly so this may contribute to condensation. Great bath and shower though. tele also poorly positioned. lets be honest no one wants to sit on the sofa in a room and watch tele. i am on holiday and want to watch it i bed. We work all year eh. Still should be out more anyway on holiday so not a huge issue to be honest.

On a positive note we had a seaside junior suite and was lovely to have the deck straight by pool and sea. Perfect to relax and room very clean . Would recommend a ground floor suite like this as the upper room did not look as inviting.

Food and Poolside Menu. Food good and price reasonable for lunch and dinner but choice limited if you were here 2 weeks but plenty of restuarants locally. Breakfast huge choice and i really liked as i love the Thai food . Partner did not think much of the egg and bacon though. Maybe a slight variation from day to day would be good. Having said that i do not like Brits abroad that expect everyone to speak English and serve Western food. I came to Thailand to experience Thailand and for me the Thai food really nice.

Pool Bar: Ok but shabby looking already (life is needed) due to sea air i would imagine. Its the little things that need looking after though as they rot quickly without care.

Staff: Kind and friendly but i get the feeling they are not happy/bored in their work not sure why i feel this. Are management looking after their staff well here and directing them properly?? As a nurse manager i always believe that your staff need to be looked after with care and then they will treat your clients with care. I could be wrong here though but there really needs to be happiness and direction in this resort coming from top down. it is low season though so this may be the case.

Spa: Wonderful and staff kind. enjoyed my massages - thank you

Kids club: Had no children with me but if i did i would be more than happy with what is provided. Nice pool and childrens club for the little ones.

Gym - Perfect

Adult activities: Boules, library pool table - Loved the boules. Also plenty of other activities here and trips to go out if wanted.

Overall view: I would probably not return as i hardly return to places twice (although Boracay i would ) but for those thinking of going please try and you may love it. certainly for older people or those with young families. And for Management here - More love, happiness and soul is needed here and then would be a great resort. Pull your fingers out! you have great location here make the most - sort the building issues out and give this place some heart and soul. Small things can make a 4 star hotel 5 star service.

Beautiful new resort in the heart of Khao Lak. Very modern with everything you need at the resort. Staff very friendly and great activities. Excellent location right on the beach and close to the main shopping area of Khao Lok. Would definitely recommend it and would love to stay there again in the future.

We took advantage of an extraordinary deal with Luxury Escapes in May/June this year. We loved every minute of our time at the Sands and were treated as family more than guests. The room was luxurious and the gardens immaculately tendered The staff were friendly and accommodating and the food was excellent. We would recommend this resort to anyone wanting a perfect holiday in beautiful surroundings.

Room Tip: All rooms had views of the resort and the beach. Any would do.

We stayed at the sands for two weeks on half board, We had a swim up room which was well worth the extra, Breakfasts were superb, plenty to choose from, As i say we were on a Half board basis, which meant you could either have lunch or an evening meal, The evening meals were from the menu, the only slight complaint i had was you had to pay for the water/beer, wine was very expensive.
We ventured out for a meal in town on about six occasions to different restaurants just to mix it up a bit, Great value for money not at all expensive and we never had a bad meal in two weeks.

The beach was also rally nice, we used to walk to the left or right and have a couple of cocktails/beers at some of the beach bars to watch the sun set a memory that will last forever.

The people are amazing absolutely no hassle what so ever even in the shops on the main street, We never felt threatened and some nights were coming back to the hotel after 2:00am,. the pickup type taxis were very cheap if you didn't want to walk in the humidity.

The hotel was at the end of the resort so you just walked up the road from the hotel and you were in town, less than 10 minutes. The staff at the sands were probably the best we have come across in all our travels, nothing was too much trouble. There was a happy hour at two bars from 5:30pm - 6:30pm and then 9:30pm - 11:00pm so well done the resort management for that.

We did a couple of trips, the highlight was the trip to James Bond Island, you went through the mangroves talk about Kodak time, we must have took over 100 pictures amazing full day trip.

Would we go back, you bet we will, maybe in a couple of years but definatley we will return. We went in March and the weather was great, just a couple of thunderstorms. We were told that the best time is probably Jan/feb where there is no chance of rain and the humidity is much less intense.

If you are thinking of going I hope this review gives you an idea of what to expect, it is a wonderful resort with great people great location, and great food.

Room Tip: If you want a swim up room get one on the right hand side of the resort as you look from reception...

I spent 5 nights in a Seaside Junior Suite at The Sands (ground floor room with a terrace not a balcony) and it didn't disappoint at all. The staff were wonderfully helpful and efficient, the facilities were fantastic, the rooms large & comfortable, the spas are amazing. My room was directly opposite one of the pools (the Peace Pool) and close to the beach. It was just so relaxing and peaceful - I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again!!

Room Tip: Ground floor Seaside Jnr Suite is amazing - terrace rather than balcony. I could leave my terrace do...

We stayed here in May 2014 for 5 nights and we really enjoyed our stay, the rooms were spacious, well cleaned and maintained.

We had a seaside junior suite which was close to the main restaurant (floating market) we had great sea views. Some of the rooms closer to reception don't get such a great views, because of where they're situated.

Breakfast was vast and very tasty, it was busy due to everyone dinning together but the selection was lovely and fresh.

We had happy hour drinks at the bar near the lobby and the cocktails we're nice, some too sweet. The swim up bar is lovely, the cocktails are better here than the lobby bar, the food was tasty.

There is a busy kids pool but also a quiet adults pool set a little further away which is great if you want some peace.

Tip 1 - Walk down the beach and turn right, walk all the way towards the lights and there are some lovely beach restaurants serving food at very good local prices.

Tip 2- Walk up to Khao Lak town and explore, there is a lovely restaurant called *Smile khao lak* which serves delicious food, owned by a french guy.

Room Tip: Closest to the beach as possible
