“Off the Beaten Path”
Reviewed January 19, 2014

We checked in to the Yama Resort for only one night, but wish we could have stayed longer. The hotel is a beautiful property off the beaten path in Khao Lak. It is set off the main road a little ways, about a 10 minutes walk back in the trees, which makes you feel like you have a bit of an escape. The rooms actually look like little cabins, which we thought was nice.

Fair warning, the people who run it do not speak a lot of English. It didn't really cause us any issues, check in went just fine, but if you require anything else it might be a little tricky. Upon check in, we were escorted to our room. The rooms are huge. Everything was clean and appeared to be fairly new or else very well maintained. The bathroom was a good size too and very modern. It also had a nice patio area with a cieling fan and seating, which was nice. We found with the size of the room, it did take a little while to cool off but it was a small detail. Although we didn't have the chance to enjoy it, the pool looked very nice. Breakfast was included with our rate and had many things to choose from, including a nice selection of hot food.

The hotel is a little ways from the main part of Khao Lak so just something to be aware of. It was a fairly inexpensive taxi ride into town. There are several shops and restaurants about a 10 minute walk from the property. It is up a dirt road, which can be a little dark at night but there is a guard on duty until pretty late. We walked up around midnight and he was still there so that made us feel a bit better. This has absolutely no bearing on the hotel itself, but just something to be aware of. I got food poisoning from eating at the resaurant that is directly across the street from the road you turn down to get to the hotel. The hotel is on a side road and there is a yellow sign indicating where to turn from the main street. It is an outdoor restaurant directly across the street so avoid that if possible. There are lots of other places to choose from.

Overall, if you are looking to be away from the touristy sections of town, this is the place.

This is a beautiful hotel tucked up behind the main road about 5km north of the main Khao Lak stretch. We had our own car so access was no problem. It is possible to walk to nearby restaurants, you just have to navigate a few hundred meters of dust road - fine in the day (although hot) but I wouldn't fancy it at night. To find the hotel coming from Khao Lak, look for a small road off to the right, one before the 7-11 (on the corner of another small road). The road is opposite the Suwan restaurant / Sangswan Resort. At the top of the road there is a dirt track - take that and keep going straight to the end.

It's a newly built complex in a very attractive setting. The pool is lovely - it's a bit of a heat trap though. There are comfy sunbeds and a few umbrellas for shade.

It seems to be run by a family who are sort of friendly- their English is a bit limited - that may be the cause of sometimes not feeling too welcome. But maybe not!

The rooms are modern with a balcony or terrace. They are well equipped with a fridge and lots of little comforts like slippers & robes. But the bed is as hard as a rock so it was a fitful nights' sleep. We were booked in for one night but wanted to extend except the bed put us off. We asked for an extra duvet to put under the sheet to try and soften it which they seemed to agree to so we paid for the extra night. Unfortunately when we got back in that afternoon nothing had been done and they then said that there was no spare duvet so that was that (they could have taken it from a room that wasn't occupied). A shame they lied but nothing we could do at that point except endure another night of limited sleep.

Breakfast isn't great - just OK. You can have American with eggs any style with bacon / sausage / ham but that wasn't too pleasant. There was toast and jam and on one morning a bit of pineapple & watermelon. If breakfast isn't included, don't bother.

On the whole it really is a lovely place. It's a shame about the bed and telling us that could be fixed when they wouldn't fix it. But if hard beds don't bother you and you have your own transport, at the right price, this is a good place to stay.

Room Tip: We prefered the 1st floor rooms with a balcony as the view was better, you got more breeze and a tab...
