“Idyllic and tranquil villa, close to all amenities at Bang Niang beach”

The house is located on a side road off Bang Niang beach road at Khao Lak. There are plots of land for sale along the road, but this is the only house which has been realised, so it stands alone in the forest. It is exceptionally quiet and secluded, but only a 10 minute walk (with children!) to the road linking the Highway to the beach, and a 15 minute walk back up to the main highway 4 between Ranong and Phuket, or down to the beach. A tidal river flows at the back of garden, which makes the location a paradise for bird watching. We saw Brahimny kites, Taylorbirds, Sunbirds, Greater Coucals, Kingfishers, Herons and numerous other birds which we have yet to identify. There is also a myriad of butterflies, and some small squirrel-like mammals. In the evenings the fireflies put on a display. The house itself sports a welcome collection of geckos.

The house is a tastefully furnished 4 bedroom villa. The ground floor is an open plan living/ dining / kitchen area arranged around the stairwell. There is also a separate laundry and garage. Two of the bedrooms are upstairs in this building above the living area, whilst the other two bedrooms are in an annex, one bedroom upstairs and one downstairs. These two rooms are reached by either walking past the pool, or via an external walkway. This provides privacy for those using these rooms, but is not convenient for those with young children. All bedrooms are spacious doubles with en suite bathrooms. The garden is well-kept, walled and private. The pool is 1.5m at its deepest and is an ideal play-pool for children. There are several shaded sitting areas outside, both upstairs and down.

The house was very clean and well-maintained, although the wood in the house does show the usual signs of tropical damp. The local manager for the villa was exceptionally helpful. We were welcomed with a fruit basket, fresh flowers and some drinks in the fridge. There is air conditioning, a dishwasher, washer and dryer. The electricity is metered and must be paid for on leaving the property. We paid about 2500 Baht for a week. You have to take your own rubbish back to the village to deposit this in the green bins in the street.

The road between Highway 4 and Bang Niang beach has many shops and amenities, all low-key and friendly. Here you can find bars, restaurants, resorts, massage parlours, tailors, ATMs, mini-markets and tour agents, whilst at the junction of Highway 4 and Bang Niang beach road is a small 7/11 store, more restaurants and the local Saturday market is held here.

A rental car is not necessary, but is convenient if you want to explore the area and don’t want to use a tour agency. Driving locally is easy, although you have to take care and have patience, especially with the numerous scooters. In Thailand you drive on the left. We rented from Budget whose office is 200m north of the 7/11 on Highway 4. Note that you pay in cash (about 10.000 Baht for a week for a Toyota Corolla), and full insurance is highly recommended. We used Phuket Shuttle for airport transfers and were very pleased with their service. It costs about 2000 Baht for the transfer to Phuket airport.

There are many short (about 2 kilometre) walks in the local National Park. We did one along the beach at the National Park Centre 5 km south of Bang Niang beach, and one at Ton Chang Fah waterfall about 7km east of the beach. There is an entry fee for the park: 100 Baht for adults and 50 Baht for children.

Although the villa has a fully equipped kitchen, there are so many good restaurants nearby that we never used it. We especially liked the Green Pepper restaurant for Thai food, and the Italian restaurant at the Monochrome resort for Western food. A meal for 4, including drinks, was about 1500 Baht for Thai food, and about 2500 Baht for Italian. The Monochrome also has a very nice spa, although the price of a treatment is about double that of the massage parlours on the street, at about 1000 Baht.

For those who are not familiar with Asia, make sure you are up to date on all vaccinations, including Hepatitis A. Khao Lak is malaria-free at the time of writing (August 2014) but there is a (small) chance of contracting Dengue fever, which is transmitted by a mosquito that bites during the day. Use mosquito repellent, preferably Deet. You cannot put toilet paper in the toilets and this has to be placed in a bin. Alternatively use the water hoses provided for washing, as you would a bidet. Only drink bottled water, and also use bottled water for brushing teeth. A 1.5 litre of water (Nestle brand) cost about 17 Baht in the 7/11 supermarket.

We found the Thai people to be very friendly and helpful. Bang Niang has a very relaxed atmosphere, and seemed to be geared towards families. We had a wonderful vacation here and did not want to leave!
