Most of the restaurants in Khao Lak area offer very similar menu, but prices differ significantly. It pays to it in a family, locally owned, modestly looking restaurants where you pay much less then elsewhere and yet the food is good. However, when we wanted to try something different, after reading TA reviews we decided to try Khao Niau and we were not disappointed.
The dishes are original, plenty to choose from and even a "regular" curry is delicious. Pricewise it is a bargain. Some of our favourites: Fried papaya salad, Catfish on a mango bed, Catfish a la Isan... It has a simple, pleasant, family atmosphere (it is Thai-Swiss co-owned but Thai family does the cooking). Service is very good and the swiss co-owner is taking time to explain whatever you need to know about the dishes. We probably ate there five times during our stay and we did not even reside in Bang Niang...

Since I like it authentic and local, I was a bit weary when the caucasian waiter (co-owner?) of the restaurant addressed us in German. But ... this was fortunate since apart from being extremely friendly (he turned out to be swiss) he gave us a thorough explanation of the menu and then came up with an excellent recommendation for the 4 of us. (Which is not easy, given that we're complicated eaters and partly vegetarian). We loved the papaya and mango salads, which were really fresh with the right amound of chili for our taste. As for the main dishes, it felt as if each of them had been tailor-made for every member of our picky family. The curries were accompanied by sticky rice - yet another delight.
We only spent two days at Khao Lak and ordinarilly, we would have tried another restaurant on the second night, but in a rare event of unanimity, we all were kean to go to the very same place again. I became more adventerous this time and was recommended something really, really local, namely fermented and very spicy fish (I've forgotten the Thai name, unfortunately, but if you're there, just ask for it!) - what a great experience!

It gives me great pleasure to pass on your positive rating and comments to my team. It is through feedback like yours that we find the motivation to maintain and raise our standards everyday.

Regarding the Thai name of the fermented fish: it is called “Pla-ra-Bong” and a specialty of the Isan region.

We look forward to the opportunity of welcoming you and your family back to the Khao Niau Restaurant in the near future.

Warm regards,

Jonas

Went to the market and happen to pass by this restaurant. Decided to give it a try. It is right next to the market. If you enter the market, it is on the right. Am glad that we chose this!

Food is great! We had Fried papaya - HIGHLY recommended. Tom Yum Kung - YUM YUM! Morning glory - nicely fried and delicious. Tasty Nuggets (made of chicken chunks and breaded) - for my boy. Stir fried dried chilli chicken - average. Fried fish with salt - average.

Spiciness - They asked us what level of spiciness for the food and my hubby says Asian spicy - BOY That is spicy! Haha. But yummy! Love it! Watch out if you want to try Asian spicy! haha.

I will go back anytime for the soup and the fried papaya. I will be back!

Service - really friendly! Gave my boy colouring paper and pencils to occupy his time at the restaurant. There is a pool table for the customer to play.

Price for the food is good! we paid 1000 baht for all that food plus drinks and a beer.

In a town where all the restaurants seem to have the same food for the same price (not cheap), we stopped here because a couple of options were a little cheaper and they had a kids menu. Atmosphere was nice - thatched roof, open walls, bamboo tables, candles, music that wasn't too loud. Service was a little slow, but the flavorsome food was worth the wait! Plus, the children were given colouring pages and a game to play to pass the time. Overall, would recommend this restaurant.
