“Silent and enjoyable!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2014

We had an absolut wonderful and relaxing stay at Merlin Hotel!! No music, no animation-torture, no loud guests - just peaceful silence, enough beds for all guests, wonderful shadow and enough places for catching sunburns :-) .... in the mornings we got wake-up calls from several birds. The resort is built in a kind of large forest. Many many trees, palms, flowers. In 3 weeks we had only 2 mosquito stiches. The resort is large enough to have a kids-pool far away from the "sleeping" guests. Several pools - enough places for own peace, etc.
5 minutes outside from the resort thre are several nice and cheap restaurants - almost all restaurants and the resort have free WIFI-areas. We will come back!

Room Tip: I suggest the Deluxe-Rooms - much space and very comfortable.

My partner and I have just returned from our 6 night stay at the Merlin. Having spent the previous 6 days at the 5 star Sheraton Krabi Beach Resort, comparisons were inevitable. We were not disappointed.

My first impression of the hotel and room was wow as was that of my partner. Whilst slightly disappointed that our room was not one of those pictured in the brochure, (I understand you pay more for them) my partner soon overcame this as the hotel surroundings wove their magic.

We stayed as Bed and Breakfast guests and I would echo other contributors comments that this was an ample arrangement. The buffet style breakfast was plentiful and situated in a picturesque location overlooking one of the many pools and the sea . Having eaten well at breakfast, there was little need for a large lunch, so the time could be spent more fruitfully, soaking up the sun and gazing over fantastic views. In addition, waiters were always on hand during the day to keep us supplied with drinks although be aware that anything bought in the hotel is subject to a service charge and the Thai version of VAT.

We took the 5 minute walk into the village in the evenings. Restaurants are plentiful, all excellent value and all with great (inexpensive) food. We rarely if ever spent more than 700 baht (about £12) in total on an evening meal which included main course, drinks and desserts. Value indeed.

In summary, I would say that the Merlin is excellently situated for a great holiday. Friendly staff, great facilities and great surroundings made for a great holiday.

This is our second stay at the Merlin Resort previous 2009. If yo want a Thailand holiday without the razzmatazz of Phuket then go to Khao Lak and I would recommend this resort. Firstly the rooms are spacious we had a De Lux room requested the same room as previous which the management obliged. There are spacious gardens with plenty of sun beds though it hadn’t rained for two months so there was a fair amount of scorched grass about which did deteriorate from the presentation. Breakfast is both continental and English and can be taken inside or out there is also a smoking and non-smoking Area which thankfully is adhered to by the staff. Though I did miss my prunes and figs and the fruit salad could have been a bit more varied. As regards other meals they have started to realise they need to be competitive with their pricing as there are numerous restaurant’s in the area, you can eat at a different restaurant on a two week stay each night without going into Khao Lak itself, within easy walking distance. During March there is entertainment most nights at the resort and specialty meals again reasonably priced. As regards the bar you can get free internet here but the jewel in the crown is a Guitarist Mr Bobin who by first impressions when you see him your thoughts are where did he come from. We were very pleasantly surprised he has a fairly full repertoire of 70’s and 80’s music and is very pleasant on the ear and was greatly appreciated by most guests. You can walk along a wonderful beach stopping of at various drinking stops though I would recommend Komel Corner which is about half a mile to the left. Taxis are cheap and easy to get hold of we have another 10 days here. Favourite restaurant for Service and Food The Longboat Bar along the main road.

The Wife and I love Thailand and had been to Phuket before so we thought we would try somewhere a bit further north. We went towards the end of November and unfortunately the weather wasn't great, however there is enough going on so your not sat in a hotel room.
The hotel itself is of a good standard, a bit dated in areas but the rooms are clean and there is plenty of space. We ate in the restaurant on an evening a couple of times and the Thai food is great, however on the last night my wife wanted a steak and it was pretty much inedible. The breakfast in a morning are great, I recommend the French Toast with Ham and Cheese, although some mornings there are random selections such as Shepherds Pie!
The beach is clean and there are plenty of Sunbeds, however none are allowed on the sand. If you walk down the beach at certain times of the day you are able to see Elephants taking a dip in the sea.
Most nights we ate in the village and there are number of good restaurants, although several more opened towards the end of our stay. There are a lot of Tailors and even if you say Hello to them they will bug you every night, so just politely shake your head and walk past them and they get the message.
We went to Black Jack bar several nights as they have low priced cocktails and the staff are really friendly. There were also a few other bars, with cheap beer in the village that are worth a visit. A couple of times we went to the bar at the hotel but the service was terrible and on several occasions it took at least 15 minutes to be served and then another 10 to get a drink.
The Merlin is a good hotel, however with so much to see in South East Asia we won't be returning

The area this hotel is superb if you are looking for a quiet relaxing break. The hotel is situated a 5 minute walk from the village which has multiple restaurants and small bars.

The hotel has multiple pools which are nice, we were there at the start of the season in November. We never struggled to get a sun bed (the sun was only out for 2 days in the 10 days we were there)

The breakfast was adequate catering for various nationalities, egg were made to order which was nice.

We ate twice in the hotel at night off the a la carte menu. The seafood restaurant was superb but we were let down by the steak on our last evening, the price was about double the cost in the village, but this is expected when you are in hotels.

The was a lack of atmosphere on a night in the hotel, more could be done to improve this.

Wifi is also only accessibly in the main bar on an evening.

The beach is lovely, as is the sea when it's calm. If you walk to the left of the beach you will find a little beach hut selling coconuts, mangos and pineapple for 50bhat, a great lunchtime snack and prepared fresh in front of you

Unless you want a fantastically peaceful relaxing holiday.
The Merlin Resort Khao Lak is perfectly positioned on the edge of the rainforest with a fantastic beach front location, with fantastic staff and a great mixture of guests from all nationalities.
We stayed from 4th Feb 2014 until 19th.Having read some reviews we were a bit weary and even considered going somewhere else – So glad we didn’t!
The hotel is located a pleasant 70 minutes coach trip north from Phuket airport and away from the hustle and bustle.
We booked All Inclusive with Thomson/First Choice –We checked independent travel to the resort just B&B which worked out around the same price.
Whilst we were there the menu was still evolving so after a week it was all one as hotel has a lot of ordinary bed and Breakfast guests who paid for the same meals which we found didn’t make the hotel complacent – everyone was treated the same.
The drinks menu was also the same except for some of the more exotic cocktails (served in coconuts etc.) When we arrived only Chang beer was available on AI drinks menu – they then added singa beer (which was available to paying guests and apparently more expensive) after a few days.
The wine – served by the glass to all inclusive guests was also very passable.
The breakfast was a vast buffet which did vary each day. Lunch time was a great selection from the menu including pizza, Asian and British and far too large for lunch!
Evening meals were either al a cart or buffet from the theme nights – both were very good with lots of selection. Nothing was too much trouble from the hotel staff.
The pools were probably the cleanest of any hotel we have ever been to as the staff would clean them every morning and evening with pool brushes wearing googles and snorkels and actually in the pools! They repeated this in all the swim up pools throughout the day. The army of gardeners seemed to start around 5am and still be going early evening.
Our room was a swim up room which I booked direct with the hotel as Thomson told me - computer says no! The room was fantastic – if I was given a room plan of the hotel and asked to choose a room I would have chosen ours. Positioned immediately above the waterfall of the main pool.(as in hotel website pic)Our swim up pool was surrounded by rocks and bathed in sunshine all day giving only us and the room next door access to it – we didn’t see them.
The maid were also really great and supplied ample bathroom and pool towels (we had 8 at one stage!)
The view was fantastic over the infinity waterfall to main pool then the beach and the sea!
We did not notice any noise from the pool area and sunbeds were available all around the resort all day although I understand they were at 90% occupancy. Most people seemed to go for a sun bed above the beech rather than the pool areas .
Sun beds in Khao Lak are not allowed n the beach anywhere to keep it natural which I think is fantastic!.
The hotel staff could also be seen raking the beach every morning. The sea was also very pleasant to swim in without a jelly fish in sight! It seems they are seasonal.
We would walk along the beach most mornings to watch the elephants paddling in the sea - we had a few massages along the beach which were all very good and around 350-400 BHT
I found ‘lovely massage 2’ the best situated along the beach turn right from the hotel and situated in the small restaurant/complex called baansunetra (www.bansunetra.ch) The food here was also fantastic, very cheap and a lot lighter for lunchtime than the hotel.
The handful of shops and restaurants situated outside the hotel are all ok we only tried the bamboo restaurant which was good. The shops are great similar in priced compared to Khao Lak town however any shopping around you will find cheaper – avoid the tailors although polite very persistent!
Taxi to Khao Lak is 150BHT and to the market is 250BHT – at the market haggle everywhere! It’s really an interesting shopping experience in a great atmosphere.
Laundry service is available in many shops outside hotel 60BHT (£1.20)per kilo including pressing and they do a great job.
Change you money at booth either outside the hotel or in town far better rates than UK or the hotel.
Hopefully I’ve given a helpful honest review given some of last years – we will certainly return and request swim up room no.**** message and I will let you know. ;-)

Room Tip: Swim Up room with sea view.

Stayed at the Merlin in February bed and breakfast, as most people have said the hotel is set in a lovely setting, the beach is lovely, the staff could not be faltered in any way, the room was cleaned daily and the breakfast was very good with a mixture of English and Thai food.
The reason for writing this is that i keep reading that people are staying All Inclusive, in my opinion there is no reason to stay AI and eat all your food at the hotel, a 5 minute stroll outside the hotel there is about a dozen restaurants selling well prepared tasty Thai food at a reasonable price generally about 120 Baht (£1.40) for a main meal, Chang about 90 Baht, also by eating at these places you are supporting the local economy.
As i say don't go All Inclusive.
