Chong Fah has been a resort that I have planned on visiting for a couple of years and we finally made it there at the start of the month. Khao Lak is a very quiet area an hour drive north from Phuket Airport and it's welcome break from the usual party attmosphere in Patong. The resort is situated directly beachfront and within walking distance of numerous restaurants and small bars. Many of these are shut during the low season however we were never at a loss as to finding somewhere different to eat.
The transfer from airport to resort was by local taxi at the airport and cost 2000Baht for 4 persons. Transfer took just over an hour.
On arrival our check-in was completed with a cool welcome drink of fruit punch and we were all presented with a garland of orchids and jasmine flowers. The resort is small and is built around the pool which looks out onto the beach. At this time of year the south west monsoon makes the seas very rough on the west coast of the Thai penninsular and not really suitable for swimming. A walk along the miles of deserted golden sand is however highly recommended.
The rooms are very spacious and have all the usual facilities. This includes free wireless Internet connection (something the larger resorts should include). Our room was of the Deluxe type and did not have a bathtub. The rain shower was however one of the most powerfull I have ever experienced. Higher standard rooms do have baths and jaccuzi but I believe them to be outdoor. Not ideal in the monsoon season with the frequent rain showers. Towels for the beach and pool are in your room and there are enough sun loungers for all guests located around the pool and along the beach front.
The resaurant was excellent and only slightly more expensive than other local places in the vicinity. Breakfast was very good. Eggs cooked to order and although it was buffet style they only put out small dishes of the food on offer and replenished them on a regular basis so that the choices were always fresh and hot. Both western and asian food was available and this included small sampler portions of some classic Thai dishes. On a Thursday evening they have a buffet dinner which I would certainly recommend. Price is 499Baht per person and the choices are superb. It included a variety of asian style cooking and although buffet many of the dishes were swiftly cooked to order. There is also a singing guitar player who will come to your table and serenade you while you eat. A very nice night. Prices for drinks are reasonable with local beer costing 90Baht and a small glass of house wine at 160Baht.
There are a few other hotels / resorts along the beach but only one beach bar / restaurant also called Chong Far. It is 2 minutes walk along the beach to the left of the resort and also has a couple of local massage ladies who charge 300Baht / hour for Oil Massage. It was very relaxing. The weather was suprisingly good while we were there and we only had one day of fairly continuous rain. It can be rather wet at this time of year. Altogether we loved our stay at Chong Fah and would recommend it highly as a quiet and peacefull resort with very friendly staff. None of them ever walk by without saying hello.
