“Basic Hotel, Yummy Breakfast”
Reviewed July 6, 2009

We stayed here before our safari trip. The hotel was basic and for the most part, fairly clean. The breakfast buffet was delicious.

I was adviced by a fellow traveller to try Impala Hotel. We were drop off to the hotel by a shuttle where our luggage were quickly ushered to the reception by the porter. The check in was quick done by proffesionals - very neat and friendly. I asked for the new rooms, the rates are good. The rooms are not what you would expect , spacious, clean hot water, very well aired just to mention. They have a variety of restaurants and I was mpre impressed by the fact that the hotel has a bureau!! Basically, everything about this Hotel was unbelievable considering how remote Arusha is. I was more facinated also how the staff follow up on our comfort on room, food, internet service , laundry , etc. This ia s Hotel to definately try !!!

We stayed for 3 nights while shopping for a safari/ The reservation worked fine by email, and we got USD10 discount by asking for a seniors discount. There were lots of problems with our first room - no A/C (when we reported it they brought a portable unit about 11pm), nissing fridge (we did not realize that we should have one until later), no place to plug in the kettle in the place it was set up (we moved it and plugged out the bedside light), and the mosquito net did not fit the bed.

We were moved the next day, and I suspect upgraded (room x00A, I think 700A). This was as described by a previous poster. It had all the facilities, but the door lock was extemely difficult to open, the fridge was wonky, and there was a distinctly poor standard of electrical safety. This should be a good hotel, but the property is not managed or maintained well.

The charges for communications are excessive - TSH 3,500 for an outside phone call, which has to be connected by an operator. This is more than the cost of a beer (a 500 ml one in a classy hotel !!) or a taxi, if it is an Arusha call. TSH 5,000 minimum for internet access in the cafe (1 hr). In town this is 1,500 with a 1,000 minimum.

Location such that it is dangerous to go outside hotel grounds after dark. One receptionist even told us not to walk to town during the day, but this advice was contradicted by others, and we did it with no problems.

Pool is beside lobby and lots of people; we did not see it used while we were there. The lobby is pleasant and good for people-watching.

Nice breakfast and good hot water . But you could do better.

We stayed at the Impala for one night before and after our Kilimanjaro climb, so were desperately in need of a good night's sleep and good food on both occassions and that's exactly what we got.
Room 800A was super-spacious with chairs, couches, comfy king bed, TV and a huge bathroom. Clean and functional - absolutely ideal!
Sure, the food's not going to get a Michelin star, but the pasta portions were huge, tasty and arrived quickly.
Our luggage was stored with no problems during our week-long trek and we had laundry done on our second visit and it was back with us within a couple of hours with no problems.
Sure, things run a little slower in Tanzania than New York, so do give yourself more time than you normally would to check out or change travellers checks etc, but have to say that despite the odd wait, everything we needed was taken care of with no mishaps at all.
The pool and loungers were also a welcome surprise!
A great three-star jumping off point for exploring Tanzania. Would definitely stay again.

We stayed in the Impala in Arusha for five nights while attending a conference. Business booked the hotel so we had no choice. If we go back to Arusha, we will not stay there again.

Rooms were old and run down. TV didn't work. Lamps didn't work. Construction outside the window. They charged us too much when we left.

Breakfast buffet was okay. They had brewed coffee. Staff was helpful. Restaurant in back makes good Indian food. Zero atmosphere at the Impala.

I flew from Entebbe, Uganda via Dar Es Salaam and Zanzibar. Once I arrived in Kilimanjaro Airport, there are guys (taxi) bandits who try and take you to Moshi. Moshi is where Kilimanjari is located. A nice Tanzanian gentlemen told me about a hotel in Arusha with all the amenities that I would need for five days. I paid a cab driver 50 dollars U.S. and arrived at Impala Hotel within 30 minutes. The staff, facility, dining areas, shops and room accomodations were outstanding, The hotel is very clean has a swimming pool, bar, three restaurants and is located in the heart of Arusha. There is a nice Sushi bar within 5 minutes walking distance. If you walk five additional minutes you will be in downtown Arusha. The hotel offer safari trips to Serengeti, Kilimanjaro and the Ngorogoro Crater. The security at this hotel is great. I have read some of the other reviews and I would like to know if they are serious about what was said. When I return to Kili I will always make it a habit to stay at nothing but the best like
Impala. Even by Western standards the Impala is at least 3 star quality.

  • Liked — Elevator and good access for disabled people. Overall, the food at those three restaurants. Make sure you order the giant spring rolls at the Asian Restaraunt. Keep in mind that there are two restaurants located adjacent to eachother plus a splendid bar near the pool. There are nice little shops to buy Tanzanite and other jewelry.
  • Disliked — The attendant who are on duty at night appear rather busy, but if you apply some patience they will attend to your needs. I recommend that you change your currency in the hotel not downtown

We (=me and my wife) were there as a part of group of 19 persons. We were the unlucky to get an 'old room'.
At 11pm we were not ready to fight for a room on the better side. Room was good enough for sleeping but noisy, no view, no proper shower.
Breakfast was good enough for leave Arusha.

  • Liked — Bed was good enough
  • Disliked — Noisy, bad shower
