“Good stay”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

After a safari trip we stayed here for an overnight and then back to Nairobi. We reserved 6 rooms for 12 people. It was a decent stay.

* Breakfast is included. ok selections. We had dinner in the hotel and food was good consider it is in Africa. $10 per person. If you pay dollars, make sure the change rate. The server tried to rip us off but fortunately we talked to their manager first.
* There is free WIFI. big plus. You can image how excited we were after 7 days no internet life. But the signal is pretty week in the room.
* The rooms were clean and basic. The water worked good.
* The stuff are friendly.

When our group of 9, just off Safari, arrived at the Hotel it was'nt busy. Our room (my wife an I) was on the 4th floor and the porter took us up a lift to the 3rd foor as we needed to walk up a stairwell to the 4th even though there was a lift to the 4th - just not to our side of the building - strange. On entering our 'internal' room (with a window overlooking a corridor) we had difficulty entering due to a cupboard door that did not close properly. The air cond did not work due to old batteries n the controller and the TV could not pick up any English speaking channels!. There were no vents in the bathroom and a very unpleasant odour when I opened the batroom door next morning (made us both retch) - explains why the bathroom door was held open by a bin when we first arrived at the room?. Also, the shower rose fell apart when I first used it, incredible - really shoddy. The 2 meals we both had (not from the Indian or Chinese restaruants) seemed to be reheated by a grill. Although edible - not great cuisine. The Hotel has ambiance but, my experience, is missing on quality and service - They need to pick up there game here.

Room Tip: Ask to check out the room first - really a must.

The Impala is a dumping ground for packaged safari and kili climb packages. The hotel is outdated and the grounds are beginning to show its age. We stayed 3 nights at the Impala (2 provided by our Kili climb company and 1 night on our own) and found that, as others have mentioned, the rooms vary greatly in size and quality. The first night we were there we were put in a tiny room with the hardest mattresses I have ever slept on (not a good start to climbing the highest mountain in africa with a sore back) and the shower was barely operational. The tv dated back to the 1950s and the plug didnt even connect into the wall (why have an old junky tv in the room when it wont even plug in?!) and there was no AC or fan. The toilet also leaked all over the floor whenever you went to flush it!...lovely. The other 2 nights we were put in a larger room on a higher floor...this room was better than the first but it was still pretty bleak for the 100-140$ a night rip off rate they charge a night. The shower/tub was again barely operational and the sink was broken. The hotel seems to have a sewage issue aswell as our room stunk like rotten sewage for both nights we were there. There are way better options for your money in Arusha, dont waste your time and money at this dump!

In sum:

Pros: A decent sized pool, although the water is freezing cold
The location is convenient for many of the Safari/Kili operations so if you are looking to hop on with a group it might be the place to do it
The atmosphere with all the tourists on their way to Safaris/climbs was great but im sure this is the case in most of the arusha hotel hotspots.
The grounds are safe and the hotel has 3 restaurants on site

Cons: 1) Poor wireless internet...the wireless internet did not work in the room! (as advertised) and for 2 of the 3 nights we stayed there the WIFI didnt work at all (even in the restaurant and lobby)....they charged a ridiculous price for an hour of use on the computers (5$ american for 1 hour!) even though the WIFI was down...
2) Rooms are outdated and small...bathrooms are barely functional at best.
3) Laundry charge is BRUTAL...they charges per item instead of per bag...after a safari or a long climb on the mountain you need to clean your clothes before you head off somewhere new...the impala charged anywhere from 1-7$ per item (3$ for washing 1 pair of socks...give me a break!) ....try to find a local laundromat if you end up getting dumped at this hotel by your tour operators..
4) The restaurants are WAY overpriced for arusha standards..the food was okay, but not worth the high pricetag by any means.
5) The hotel seems to have alot of staff, but few know what is going on at the hotel....The front counter staff are not really all that helpful and the language barrier makes it even more difficult..
6)The location is a little sketchy at night...the direct vicinity around the hotel is okay, but just a block or two down the old impala road is a no-go zone for tourists. There is abunch of touts hanging out between the tourist market and the Impala which will follow you into town and try to sell you their artwork...while this is not the hotels fault the hotels location is not ideal for reaching the markets hassle-free by foot.
7)The exchange place on site has really poor rates
8) The street noise is pretty brutal and the constant sewage smell in the room was worse than the smell of 12 mountain porters after a 7 day Kili climb!

All in all, an overpriced hotel with way more cons than pros. Skip this hotel if you can.

Room Tip: Dont bother with the Impala unless you are forced to stay there by your tour operator...Switch hotel...

Our stay at the Impala was very stressful. When we arrived they did not have the right room for us. It look 2 hours to sort this out and eventually resulted in one of my colleagues sleeping on the floor on a mattress.

The rooms were not very clean and quite small; hot water was rare and every day they took our towels away and we had to ring reception for them to be replaced.

They also cancelled our airport transfer so we ended up having to get a taxi.
The only redeeming part of this hotel is that they have a very good Indian restaurant.

As indicated by most other reviews, it matters which rooms you get. The old wing is very daggy and the bathrooms and mattresses all need replacing.
However; all rooms that I had were large with large bathrooms and hot water that just kept going - VERY important after a trek! There is soap, body wash & shampoo if you're trying to pack lightly. They also provide 2 x 500ml of bottled water a day and the cleaning staff happily provide more if you ask. The Indian restaurant is great and the public areas are actually really nice spaces to relax in and grab some wifi.

Room Tip: Ask to stay in the new wing

We stayed here three times on two different rooms during our Tanzania holiday. The first room was small, dark, far from clean but with a fridge and a hairdryer. The next room was larger, with more light and cleaner though still a bit sedated. It lacked fridge and hairdryer. In general it took a very long time to get hot water but when it finally arrived it was really hot and though the water preassure did not impress we did manage to wash off the dust from Kilimanjaro. We found that noise from people walking and talking outside the rooms went right through the walls. Breakfast is adequate though not impressive and the staff was friendly but you could feel that it is a big place with a lot of guest so they probably dont have time to give you extra or personal service. We ate chinese or italian dinner in their restaurant and found it to be good but nothing fancy. The shuttle service to Nairobi was a big plus for us since we needed to catch a plane from there. I am not sure about the price level in Arusha but if we ever get back I think that we would prefer to pay more to get a better hotel though room number two was not that bad. And after a week on Kilimanjaro all hotel rooms looks nice.

I spent around a week in Impala. First room I got was less than enjoyable. Dark, with small window, shower didn't work properly, no A/C.
After coming from Kilimanjaro, I was given another room - much better - bright, with pool view, better shower.
However I've got impression that hotel doesn't have hot water at all. Just warm. You really can not take hot shower, maximum is warm.
Staff tried to look friendly and smile, but really didn't care. Several times our requests were ignored, or we got answer like "probably you are doing something wrong". One of waiters from bar on 1st floor was asking for money.... Personnel definitely needs more training.
In evening time there are hookers in lobby and bar, which also can not be counted as a plus.
Food quality was ok.
This hotel doesn't worth the price they asking for the room.

Room Tip: check rooms with pool view.
