The lodge itself is great, it has a lot of character and gorgeous rooms. The rooms are rustic but have everything you need. The problem was with the service and the location. The staff were very friendly, but they didn't provide any information as to what facilities were available etc. I had someone come in a couple of times without knocking to spray the room for mosquitos which would have been fine if I'd been told in advance to expect them. Everytime I went to use the internet it was in use or broken. I was also told prior to arriving that there would be a free shuttle for conference delegates, but was told this was not the case when I arrived. etc, etc, I could go on. It's ok if you don't expect much.

The rooms are nice, but the bathrooms are small - small price to pay for a lovely hut.
Beautifull landscaping, excellent food both in the restaurant and bar at reasonable prices.
However the noise is BAD. We had the dogs barking all night, and they seem to be all over by the dozen. Seems also that we were unlucky enough to arrive just after new year's day for an extended party night - loud music till very late.
However same happen 7 days later after the climb, but not a week later after the safari.
If wasn't for that I would give five stars
Very friendly staff, very quiet in the morning and evening - bring ear plugs and sleeping-aid pills for the night.
The mattress are too soft and ofcourse sink mostly in the middle.
No problems with mosquitos, but expect some local bugs, including gekos.
Yes, it's short bumpy road, which server as an appetizer to what will come to you if you are doing any car travelling anywhere.
Did fell very safe all the time, and staff was always friendly and prompt to help.

The l'oasis is hidden away deep in a village on the outskirts of town and requires driving on a bumpy dirt road for about 1/4 mile to get there. Once you get there you really do feel like you're in an oasis secluded from the ongoings of the surrounding village.

We stayed in one of the cottages, room 9, before and after our safari. The room was comfortable, pleasant and nicely decorated with an African theme bedcover, canvas wall hangings and wood carvings. The thatched roof made for a really cool ceiling which resembled a big open umbrella. They also provide bottled water in your rooms but we didn't drink any so not sure if you'll get charged for it.

The bathroom was in need of a little TLC as there were some areas that were a little worn. But there was hot water and good water pressure which was not always the case in Tanzania (as I would later find out).

Skip dinner at the main restaurant and eat at the Lounge instead if you have a choice. We ate at both the lounge and the main restaurant and felt that menu at the Lounge was more diverse and included more local dishes while the menu at the main restaurant was mostly continental. Though at the main restaurant you get to eat outside while the Lounge is all inside.

At the Lounge, I had the shrimp steamed in banana leaves while hubby had the Pork Balti. Both were really good. The shrimp came with this mint lime dipping sauce and was served with sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves. I loved the rice as it had a nice chewy texture. The pork balti was diced pork in a deep red curry sauce and also served with rice in banana leaves. That was really yummy too though the pork was a tad overcooked. You also have the usual safe choices of pizza, burgers, and nachos but you're in Africa so......

Yes, the place can get quite noisy since its in the middle of a village. While the incessant barking dogs kept me from falling asleep at night, the roosters and calls to prayer kept waking me up at the dawn of day. The prayers were broadcasted over a loud speaker and I swear that one time the prayer lasted for 2 hours. But who knows I may have lost track as I was drifting in and out of sleep. It was also Ramadan so this may have been the exception.

We decided to get picked up by their driver at the airport which we arranged in advance for $60 one way. Although, this was about $10 more than what a taxi would have charged we felt it was worth it just for the convenience alone. After flying for 20 hours and arriving late at night, we did not want to think about how to get to the hotel. The driver does offer you bottled waters but I think the hotel charged us for these afterwards. They will also take you to Arusha Airport for $35 but a taxi will only cost you $10 to $15.

The L'oasis, we were told, is about 3km or 2 miles from the center of town, although, the Rough Guide says its within walking distance. I don't know about you but walking distance to me means it takes 10-20 minutes, not 45 to 60 min.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the L'oasis. Food was delicious, service was good and attentive, and the place was pleasant. Although, the noise can be problematic I don't know if it would be better or worse near the center of town.

We stayed at L'Oasis during SeptoOct 2009. We had planned a safari in several Tanzanian national parks plus a trip to Zanzibar. We selected L'Oasis as our base to go from on the basis of other trip Advisor reports - and we weren't disappointed. The place is excellent value for money, accommodation is rondavels and stilted cabins - not 5* but very comfortable unless you are really fussy. Food is basic but good quality, tastes great and plenty of it. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful - you couldn't ask for better. We received a warm welcome and as they knew we were arriving late they kept the kitchen open so we could get a meal. They also kept our extra baggage, including laptop etc. safe any secure while we were on safari and in Zanzibar.

I recommend it highly to anyone who wants a genuine place to stay.

nice rooms but no mosquito nets and very noisey with dogs barking all night on one side and orphanage on other side. Not very central at all but nice rural walk nearby. However could have its nice sides. Food was good but staff so so friendly in cafe.

We stayed at L'Oasis both before and after our safari, on the first occasion the bed seemed a little short and the pillows weren't great, however on our return (a different room) the bed and pillows were great and really comfy. The food was lovely, they have a set menu (for half board) and you have a choice of starter, main and dessert with tea or coffee, be warned though, this is the same every night (or was on the 3 nights we stayed) so for longer stays might not be great. Lovely and quiet during the day, the staff are a delight (especially the man with the cropped jeans and wellies who porters bags and generally helps out wherever he's needed, he even walked half way into town with us to make sure we didn't get lost) From the maps etc of Arusha I was under the impression that L'Oasis was stuck out on it's own, it isn't and borders a big village, it's noisy with dogs barking in the night but the trusty earplugs did us proud yet again and it was fine. About a 20-30 minute walk into town, quite a pleasant stroll, uphill on the way back though.

We stayed here just for 1 night on arrival in Arusha before getting picked up for safari the day after. The rooms are lovely, staff are very friendly. The rooms are all seperate (detached) with thatched roofs- pretty basic but this is Tanzania.
The restaurant was really lovely and food was all cooked fresh- massively extensive menu and really lovely - huge portions!
It's up a very bad road- but again this is Tanzania, and it's probably better that it's out of the way a little, as Arusha is not the nicest of places.
