“Great character and YUMMY FOOD”
Reviewed July 6, 2009

We stayed here as a stopover from our safari trip. Of all the places we stayed in Tanzania, this hotel had the most character. Our rooms each had painted murals. The bathrooms tended to plug up which was a minus. Service was great though and the food was incredible. The restaurant served Western style cuisine as well as S. African wines which we really appreciated after camping out for five days during our safari.

This review is for the backpacker paradise rooms that are part of the L Oasis lodge. This is where I stay whenever I don't have an apartment in Arusha (I've spent equivalent of several months staying at this place). The rooms have a bed with a sink, vine painted walls and hardwood floors. they are all on a second floor with outside access that opens up to a creek where hammerkop birds are commonly seen. the bathrooms are just down the steps. boys and girls separate bathrooms, nice toilets, clean, and importantly-always HOT water. Some of my best showers in Tanzania have been here. Its very secure. there is a night guard and a gate, also two very friendly dogs-the brown one is a jumper-you'll know because she gallops at you. just push her head and she gets the point.

Its across the dirt road from the Lodge, and here is what makes it soooo much better than any of those guest houses in town for similar prices-you get to use all the facilities. This includes a very nice, always clean pool with nice lounging area, cute open bar/restaurant with a TV-CNN/BBC usually on.

The food, as Ive posted elsewhere is excellent. read one post said it wasn't, well I am a foodie and can say with complete conviction that the food here is very good. Homemade egg noodles, great pesto sauce, lamb kebobs worth writing home about.... That same reviewer also said breakfast was basic. Hmm, bacon, pork sausage (not those hotdogs you get elsewhere), eggs, french toast, fruit, cereal, toast.....I saw a girl order cheese and ham once and they happily brought it to her! The grounds are very pretty and lots of spots to relax with cold beer after long safari. The people working there are all very nice and helpful-they make you feel very welcome.

Do you sometimes hear dogs at night? yes, this is Tanzania-home to thousands of street dogs. Ive heard dogs at night staying at hotels in town too-and in town you also have to contend with lots of annoying flycatchers the minute you leave the hotel. Is the road there bad? yes. 98% of roads in Tanzania are bad. I find it funny when people complain.....your'e here to go on safari right? Do you expect paved roads in Serengeti? If you cant handle 3 minutes on a bumpy road good luck with 8 hours on one!

Ranting aside-for the money you cant beat this place. its around 20$ for a room, compare this to guest houses in town where the shared bathrooms are often filthy and/or squats and located in town and no breakfast? no thanks-Ill stay at backpackers paradise!

We stayed at La Oasis before and after our Safari to Serengeti with Basecamp. The staff and management at La Oasis are very good and personal.

We were to leave very early in the morning to catch a bus to Lushoto and beside a breakfast box we got a thermos flask and coffee/tea without asking for it.

We stayed around Christmas and enjoyed it very much!

My wife and I stayed at L'Oasis for a couple of nights in December after returning from Safari. We picked up a tummy bug and were vomitting and had diarrhea unfortunately. We asked Steve the manager about local doctors and he was very helpful and brought us complimentary water, buckets and toilet paper without being asked. Being sick away from home is not a pleasant experience however, Steve was very accommodating and also offered to send one of his employees out to get a medecine that stops diarrhea as well. It's service like this taht made all the difference.

Thanks Steve.

We spent 2 nights in this place in August 2008. We had a pleasant stay.
The round bungalows are simple and somwehat basic, but quite nice and built in typical swahili style. Yet, the bathrooms would definitely benefit of some renovation.
The bungalows are spread in a lovely garden with nice flowers and exoctic birds freely walking and grazing on the grass.
The bar is in a very beautiful building and that's where we had our first dinner and some drinks on both evenings. Very well decorated and offering a great african ambience. There is a small pool next to it but we did not use it.
The real restaurant is more simple and it is almost open air (so do bring jumpers cause in the evening it can get a little chilli).
We found food to be generally good or even very good. Breakfast is somewaht more simple but is OK.
Personnel is always very kind and co-operative. They are smiley and always eager to help.
In sum, it is a very nice place. Don't expect luxury or a super-modern / super-comfortable accomodation, but do expect a lovely mid-range place with a nice African atmosphere.

I stayed here based on the reviews I read and I have to say it was quite a disappointment. The grounds are fine but nothing special, the rooms are very dark and depressing and the bed linens and towels were downright scary. The food that everyone raves about was so-so. One meal was pretty good, the other was inedible. I was grateful to have only been here for one night.

The L'Oasis lodge is a good looking lodge just outside Arusha center. The small houses look very pretty from the outside and are spacy on the inside (except for the bathroom which is rather small).

Steve the owner is very helpful in arranging things for you and comes by for a talk in the evening.

The lounge restaurant looks very amazing and the food is fine, although not as good as some travel books say. Breakfast on the other hand is not that good.

Biggest draw back is the noicy surrounding during night. We stay in this lodge three nights and on all night (wild) dogs kept us awake. We used ear plugs, but still the noice keeps you awake.
