“First stop on Tanzanian Safari”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

This was the first of four Serena lodges that we stayed in on our safari. Accommodations, food and service were all excellent. Grounds are well maintained and you can walk around. You need a flashlight at night.

This colonial style lodge is absolutely lovely. The staff that greets you and carries your luggage to the "hut" which is a beautifully laid out room with a spacious bathroom, door to a beautiful garden with a terrific view of the lake. There is no a/c but a ceiling fan which does the trick. The flora is lush and well maintained. A banana tree on the pathway and a huge poinsettia attest to the lushness of the area. There are large seating areas with giraffe shaped chairs which are simply eye catching.
The lodge staff are polite, and exceptionally helpful and professional. The dining room is lovely and the food (dinner, and breakfast) was excellent. I spent 2 days there, one before we left for safari and one when we returned. The Gift Shop is nicely stocked. One can pay in Tanzanian Shillings or USD.
The road in to the Lodge is quite rough and dusty. Unfortunately, this Serena Lodge does not have pool. Internet works and was not too difficult to access.

We stayed the the Mountain Village Lodge for a full day and one night on our way from Nairobi to the Serengeti. Our room was clean and absolutely lovely -- the grounds and the main lodge were gorgeous and meals were outstanding. The service was absolutely top notch. I would absolutely go back. In fact, I wish I was there now ...

We were picked up at the airport in a safari jeep that helped set the atmosphere, then we were whipped down smooth roads by fields, small "cafes" and little shops. Then we turned left and a car was stuck in the middle of the dirt road where it had fallen into a huge rut. I couldn't believe that a decent hotel would be down this amazingly awful road. We pulled up and the lodge was very pretty and the girls at the desk, especially Susan (there are two of them) were wonderful! We were placed as far from the lodge as possible, but once we got used to it, we loved it. The room was very nice!!!! The service was great and in the dining room the service was absolutely amazing. We ate there 3 nights and couldn't believe how good the food was and the servers, especially the men were very funny! The "bar food" was also good and the lodge had wonderful coffees that you could just sit and sip.

This really is a great place although they understandably don't like you to wonder off the grounds. We did go with a guide to the open air market. It was huge and very interesting. I wouldn't go on the hike around the lake though. It was a lot of climbing and up and over tree limbs. I kept thinking, "Great, just got toTanzania and now I'm going to break my leg." Didn't happen, but my husband did twist his ankle, although luckily not too badly!

We stayed 2 weeks in Tanzania and Kenya and this was by far the best restaurant. A little pricey, but not really bad for what you received.

Very good lodge. Again, with the Serenas, we were placed in a far away room. Granted, because of the storm in NYC, we had to make some changes and we arrived a day early. That could be why we got that room location at this Serena.

Service was excellent. Food was amazing. The lodge itself is beautiful. It's very old school. I kept expecting Lord Grantham to walk in at any moment!

The only thing I wish is that there was a pool.

Only stayed here for one night prior to our safari but everything was first class, as we expected from a Serena hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful and went the extra mile. Food very good and restaurant and bar service were faultless. The hotel setting is fabulous and the rooms wonderful, all looking out over Lake Dulati - a wonderful view to wake up to in the morning! We opted for a guided walk around the lake in our free afternoon and were not disappointed although we were tired ;-) Our guide was very good and made the trek very interesting. Probably not a good place to stay for more than a couple of days as activities are somewhat limited.

I stayed here for 1 night prior to a safari and think that is the case of most customers. Rooms are very nice and away from the main building. The TV in the room had 1 English language news station.

It was recommended not to leave the fenced area without an escort (seems a typical recommendation in Tanzania)

Restaurant was okay, good food, decent decor, okay service. Bar was very friendly.

I can't really evaluate "value" as it was part of a safari package.

Room Tip: The only real difference in the rooms is distance from the main lodge.
