Shaw Safaris - Day Tours

We did an 11days self drive safari with on of the great equiped land rovers.
We (2) slept fifty fifty in our tent (special campsites) and (tented)lodges.

Erika and Paulwere lovely hosts, we had a nice dinner with them on our first night.
They explained us the do and dont's on such a safari, expecially about camping and how to handle the car.

We would certainly book with shaw again in the future and would reccomend a self drive. Erika is open for all suggestions and you can plan your trip together with her.

We are a family of 4 .We had our trip organized by Erika. The first night on our way to Tarangire Park it took us hours to find the tented camp - supposedly very easy to find and end up in a village where we hired a motorcycle taxi : it was already night. The place is in the bush (very nice by the way) http://www.whistlingthorncamp.co.tz/maasai.htm but hard to find :no self driving there. We had no GPS location.
The trip by itself went smoothly and no particular mention about self-driving which I would recommend bearing in mind you need to check the car every day.
People is very nice everywhere.
Select a Land Rover rather than a Toyota. About Shaw Safari we met minor problems with the car : not important but the fridge never worked and takes the place of a guide ,most recommended in the Serengati.
Our car was well equipped with tools , 2 spare-wheels, jerry-cans for diesel : great as we ran out of diesel as the gage did not work properly....We already noted when leaving the tank was not full. Add a leaking transmission we tried to have fixed and this will be all about the car. Disappointment comes from the manager , knowing it took us hours to find our first place to stay and other troubles described above; I was quite astonished to be presented a bill for ~50$ for drinks (2 nights)...minutes before we leave. Beware : you are welcome as close friends offered with insistence something to drink and you get it on the bill including the beer my son shared with the owner...Wine during dinner, refills if any, etc..I am glad we turn down an offer for an after drink !
I paid the bill deducting these extra expenses. I would not have mentioned this if I would have received a reply with some sort of apologies but nothing came despite 2 messages. We met an other couple who also met troubles with the fridge and lost the food they had for camping. Not such a problem for us as we did not camp.
worked . I was never offered to be reimbursed for our own spending with car.
I will add the satellite phone was instead a regular mobile but worked perfectly
Hope this message to be helpful.

We stayed at Twiga Lodge and had a brilliant time. The weather was wonderful like a gloriously hot English summer's day. We didn't need air conditioning and didn't see hear or feel a single mozzie.
Paul and Erica are wonderful hosts, knowledgeable, helpful, skilful and lovely people. They gave us a fantastic few days. We had a day trip in Arusha National Park and Paul's expert eye pointed out animals and birds that were previously invisible to us! Even their garden was exciting with birds of paradise and hornbills.
Erica is a fantastic cook and every meal was delicious.
They have a wonderful team of staff who were also very friendly and helpful. Christopher was a most entertaining guide.

We recently returned from a 10 day safari with Twiga Tours and the experience was way beyond our expectations. George, our tour guide was incredible at tracking down and getting close to the animals at multiple sites. He always found the perfect spot to get those "passport pictures" of lions and leopards and so many other animals and he knew the names of every bird, plant or animal we encountered. Our luxury tents were clean and comfortable and the food was always fantastic. We also had the opportunity to visit two primitive villages and a school. The children interacted with us and it was a heartwarming experience. I would highly recommend this adventure tour.

My husband and I rented a 4x4 from Shaw Safaris for a week in early December. It was a fairly last minute booking having only booked our flights in November, but despite this Erika went out of her way to ensure our trip was expertly organised.

Erika and Paul are a lovely couple who truly care about the experience they are offering. The vehicles they provide are equipped with everything you need for a safe and comfortable. They even provide things you probably wouldn't think of - the sunglasses repair kit was a nice touch! (thankfully unused by us!).

Erika suggested a great itinerary for us which was excellent for the time we had and we visited Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara. Erika pre-arranged the special campsites for us and we spent our evenings completely alone with nature, listening to the sounds of the African night from our cosy roof tent. The self-drive experience is truly incredible and we felt very well prepared for it with all the organisational and vehicle preparation work Erika & Paul do before every trip.

We stayed with them at their beautiful Twiga Lodge the night before departure and also when we returned from safari. Our room was lovely and spotlessly clean. Erika & Paul dined with us at breakfast and dinner so it actually felt like staying with good friends rather than a formal hotel. We had a lot of fun with them and wish we could have stayed longer. Twiga Lodge is on the doorstep of Arusha National Park, and we regret not having enough time to go there.

Tanzania is a fabulous country, we found the people welcoming and friendly. The nature is outstanding. I would really recommend it as a fantastic & exhilarating place to self-drive, especially with a trustworthy company like Shaw Safaris.

I can't wait to go back!
