“Our "home away from home" in Arusha!”
Reviewed December 11, 2011

We stayed with Andy and Lillian three times - when we arrived, after our wildlife safari, and yet again just before we left the country. Tumaini was our sanctuary - the place we could retire to after the incredible intensity of our first experiences in Africa.

This is not a large impersonal hotel. They call it a cottage, but we describe it as a boutique hotel (8 rooms) at extremely reasonable prices.

Andy is experienced in hotel management, so when he designed his own place, he did it with a deep understanding of what travelers appreciate. They concentrate on cleanliness, good food, good service, and excellent value. The place is attractive, with well kept buildings and a lovely garden for rest and relaxation. Andy manages the place and serves the meals and Lillian does the cooking. Meals are served in a building next to the Conference Center, just a few steps from the cottage. It is really more like eating at a friends home than going to a restaurant. They have plans to build a larger open-air restaurant above the Conference Center (see the pictures.)

Tumaini means hope. If you get to know Andy well enough, you can ask him why they named their cottage "Hope."

Andy will arrange airport pickup and return. Since Tumaini is a little too far from downtown for most folks to walk, and most tourists aren't really up to walking out to the main road and hailing a daladala, they have Steven. A quick call and Steven will drive you wherever you want to go. By arrangement he will take you to multiple places and wait for you. He even helped us buy a telephone and sim card and add minutes. A safe, dependable driver is a treasure in Arusha.

We can't recommend Tumaini highly enough - my wife cried when we left. We felt we were not just leaving behind a great place to stay - we were leaving friends. Thank you, Andy and Lillian, for helping to make our trip to Tanzania exceptional!

Room Tip: all the rooms have similar exposure and views - all are good!

We stayed there for a night on our way back to Nairobi after a safari in Tanzania. Andy made us very welcome and was extremely helpful in helping us to get there after the directions we had did not allow us to find the place easily. It is close to Arusha but could do with a good sign indicating its location and it's best to have a car to get there. Once there we got some good, clean rooms and bathrooms as well as a nice breakfast in the morning at a very competitive rate before we continued our trip. Highly recommended as a place to stay to explore Arusha and some nearby attractions or as a stop-over on a long trip.

If your looking for a marvelous place to relax with great accomidations, excellent hospitality and good food, look no further. Two friends and I stayed a Tumaini Cottages this past October.
We were conducting a conference then going on a safari and need a place than won't drain our wallets as well as a great base to operate out of. This is a hidden jewel that delivers. The rooms were very clean and the host were easy to warm up to. A very pleasant experence!
Highly recommended!

We stayed at Tumaini Cottage before and after our Tanzania safari experience. Our choice was made based on the reviews of Tripadvisor. We were not disappointed. Tumaini Cottage is homely, spotlessly clean and has beautifully tended green gardens. It was a real oasis in the dry season at Arusha.
Our host, Andy, with a background in hospitality, has created a real gem. Nothing is too much trouble - even helping with the return of a lost camera (many thanks Andy). Airport taxi transfers in comfortable airconditioned vehicles, early morning breakfasts, and a delicious dinner of local cuisine with home grown produce were all part of the experience.
The accommodation is not made up of cottages, but of modern, spacious motel style rooms, whoch have comfortable beds and plenty of hot water.
We would not hesitate to recommend Tumaini Cottage to anyone needing to stay in Arusha.

I spent two nights at Tumaini. I needed some rest and relaxation and I was not disappointed. The grounds are very well kept and peaceful--taking a meal under the avocado tree is especially nice. The rooms are attractive and clean. The food far exceeded my expectations--it was quite good. Andy and Lillian make you feel like family—truly. I will go back.
