This was a good rest stop after a long flight. It took about thirty minutes to get there from the Kilimanjaro airport. The grounds were beautiful and my husband and I ran loops around the trails in the morning to get our legs moving before going on a safari. (about 3/4 mile per loop). The staff was friendly and the breakfast was very good. The rooms (individual huts) were nice, however, the shower is not one that you step down in and the slow drain caused our room to flood. Perhaps it was just our room?

On our return, we stayed at a place called Ngare Sero (only 5 mins away, but off the main road) and I much prefer this place over Rivertrees. I am not sure the price differential since it was booked through our tour operator. Anyway, Rivertrees is still a great option.

We stayed in Rivertrees for 2 nights before we embarked on our 2 week Safari. The staff were very helpful and conscientious. The food was good - it was a nice touch to have fresh wood fired pizzas with the outside pizza oven. The rooms were nice - could do with a face lift shortly but everything worked and the rooms were clean. The setting was lovely, lots of green trees, a beautiful river running through the grounds and you could hear lots of birds in the mornings. It was great to sit by the wood fire of an evening after dinner. You had a very nice feeling of being in the middle of a forest, but while still having good food, good drinks and great staff around you.

Sorry to say but since the last time we were here it all seemed rather run down. The food in the restaurant was the worst I have tasted in a long time. Actually really tasteless! The staff are one of the nicest things left, the rooms a but tired although we did appreciate the roses and rose petals. Don't think that we will be coming back any time soon. It is cold and dark and nobody could be bothered to light the fire. The worst thing was the food...even the bread was tasteless, how hard is it to make good bread!!!!

We stayed at Rivertrees Country Inn on the first and final nights of our two week holiday in Tanzania. It is an oasis of peace and quiet, with lovely rooms and excellent food. The swimming pool was refreshing and very welcome as we lounged on the sun beds around it. I can recommend the massage treatment!
I strongly recommend staying here and taking the time to recover from the long journey and prepare for the trip of a lifetime in the Serengeti.

Rivertrees is a group of standalone cottages and rooms set amongst large shade trees by a river with good flow as the name of the property suggests. We spent three nights there having flown in from Los Angeles via Amsterdam to help adjust to the time change, which I would recommend to anyone coming from the West Coast or with a similar time change to get acclimated if you can afford the extra days - it was nice to be able then to move onto the road and tented camps feeling almost fully refreshed and over the jet lag.

I had booked a River Cottage but ended up in the River House, which was a nice upgrade for the three nights at the top of the trip because we were traveling as a large family and therefore were able to stage pre-dinner cocktails in the large living room and terrace overlooking the river. The river house also has its own (intermittently working) wifi if that's important to you. Apparently Price Charles and Camilla stayed there.

We ended up in a River Cottage at the bottom of the trip for the use of a day room before our overnight flight back to Europe, and if I return would hop I'd end up in a River Cottage because it was quite nice and included an outdoor shower (although we didn't use because there were muddy footprints all over the floor of the shower - we decided not to call to have them clean it and used inside shower because were were only there for 3 hours)

Beds were comfortable and bathroom facilities were perfectly fine, though not 5-Star like Gibbs Farm or Singita. Food was decent and the kitchen has a large pizza oven which was tasty and fun for the kids. They have a lovely terrace overlooking the river at the end of their lawn by the main house where one can arrange for dinner/drinks/parties as we did for my father's 75th.

Not sure what the other options are in Arusha for stopovers but Rivertrees is a solid one and would stay there again if I do this kind of safari again.

Room Tip: Book a River Cottage - more space and an outdoor shower.

Stayed here recently at the beginning and end of our self-drive safari, and was really impressed with what we found. Stayed in the River House the first time, and was supposed to stay in Cottage 2 the second time but moved back to the River House again. Accommodation was really lovely, in beautiful lush garden surroundings. Wonderfully appointed rooms, including outdoor seating. Beds were very comfortable and equipped with mosquito nets. Hot water was available at any time of day or night for showering.

The communal restaurant/lounge area is very nicely decorated in understated Africana chic, with both covered and uncovered (garden) seating - including a platform overlooking the river a bit further away. An open kitchen and pizza oven allow you to enjoy the sights and sounds of food being prepared - highly recommend the pizzas, absolutely fantastic! We enjoyed our afternoons lounging around and playing backgammon with some wine in hand.

One of the best aspects of this place is the staff - superlative service, friendly and attentive, and really intent on making you as comfortable as possible.

Location is also pretty good - about 40km from Kilimanjaro International (about 30 mins drive), 26km from Arusha main town itself, and right outside Arusha National Park, which I highly recommend for a brief day drive.

In short, whilst this place is probably a little pricier than some others around, it's a great option for some R&R before and/or after you set out - highly recommended; if we're ever back in Arusha this is where we'll be aiming for.

Room Tip: River House is lovely and luxurious, but the Cottages are also fantastic and a bit cheaper!
