“Horrendous!”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

We stayed here for an afternoon whilst waiting for our flight out of Kilamanjaro and by god was it a big mistake, ending our fabulous safari holiday in mysery. Firstly, the room we booked to casually hang out in wasn't availble (something we now need to check out with our agency), leaving us with nothing other than some concrete 'chairs' and some wet cushions as it was raining and the shelter for guests does not have sides!

The food was horrendous and they didnt offer me an alternatvie when I said I wouldn't eat their food until I asked several times! Even then the alternative was well below satisfactory.

Where do I start with the staff??? On arrival the receptionist showed us to the dining area whilst on her mobile phone, walking us slowly through the rain with no offer of an umbrella, pointing and grunting at the restaurant - only what we could guess as a suggestion of where we were supposed to go. Restaurant staff were pretty shabby, cultery and glasses were not clean and flys everywhere!

The only positive was that there was free internet from the bar computer for half an hour, of which we chose to write this review! Upon reading other reviews we have hastily removed our baggage from the hotels 'care' since numerous reviews suggest the lodge compiles of on the clock theives aka STAFF!

Do not stay here, even out of conenience for the airport - god forbid what staying over night is like!

Thank you for taking the trouble to review your stay at the Kia Lodge and we are very sorry to learn that your stay at the Kia Lodge did not meet your expectations.

It is unacceptable for the staff to be on the phone while at the same time assisting guests and we have put down some stringent measures to ensure that this does not occur again by banning the use of mobile phones while around guests. I apologies for this.

We also apologies that the staff did not offer you an umbrella for the short walk to the restaurant, this is also not acceptable.

It was a rainy day and although it wasn't raining very hard, it is possible that some of the cushions in the bar got wet due to a gust wind.

While we strive to have a menu that caters for most travelers, sometimes what is on our buffet menu is not favorable to all guests and that is why we developed a trendy snack menu that is proving to be popular. This of course should have been offered to you immediately you complained.

The staff have uniforms now which has improved their appearance, as for flies, yes we have a problem with a lot of flies at the lodge lately which can be very annoying to the guests, however as the restaurant is open this is a difficult problem to address and since food is involved we cannot spray insecticide either, but as the flies are seasonal we are working on getting a trap that will be on the outside of the restaurant to capture the flies.

As for dirty cutlery and glasses - all staff are briefed to clear all cutlery after a guest has eaten not just the cutlery on the plate they have been doing this for a while. The glasses are always washed straight away, but are also kept in the fridge to keep them cool which can create condensation on the glasses, once removed from the fridge for use.

As for the luggage, the previous incident was a one off issue and nothing like that has happened since. May I also point out that we did take responsibility for the losses by refunding the guests.

I have shared your comments with our management team and we have addressed these issues accordingly and we hope to host you at another time so that you may see and experience the difference your feedback has made.

We have just stayed there for 1 night. They mistakenly gave us a wake-up call at 2.30am when our flight was in the afternoon! The staff need training, service is slow and they get food orders wrong.Would not stay here again. The pool area is nice.Convenient for airport.

I stayed here in a day room on my last day in Tanzania. Like most people, I booked here because it's close to the JRO airport. I found it to be adequate, with a lot of rough edges.

Good things:
- Nice grounds with plantings. Nice pool.
- Rooms are a comfortable size.
- Very convenient to JRO airport - about 1 km away from the terminal. In spite of the posted schedule, you can get a shuttle bus to transport you almost whenever you want.
- Internet in the bar was very speedy.
- Bellmen and drives are easy to find and eager to help.

Bad things:
- Restaurant is so-so. The food was rather basic, with not a lot of choice. The restaurant is open-air, which is pleasant in the dry season, but there were a lot of flies buzzing around and sitting on our food.
- No Internet anywhere outside of the bar
- The reports on hot water are entirely true: we had enough hot water for slightly less than one shower.
- The staff must live mostly off of tips, because they are lurking around waiting to grab your bags even when you don't want them to.
- There is absolutely nothing else in this area. You're stuck with the hotel's facilities and restaurant.
- The rooms are a bit rough here and there. A few things are broken or not entirely solid. We also lost power for about half an hour. This seems to happen a lot.

Room Tip: The best rooms are furthest from the other rooms, i.e. at the edges of the grounds.

.The location is good for late arrivals. The rooms are comfortable with a good bed and shower. Each room has good privacy and you don't hear other guests. There is wireless internet at the bar which is reasonably priced. The breakfast was good. The day rooms we returned to after nine days on Mt. Kilimanjaro were wonderful because we could get clean and go right to the plane.

I stayed here one night in June, 2013, ahead of leaving on safari. We stayed in Kilimanjaro rather than Arusha because our flight came in late the night before, and we were hoping to see Mt. Kilimanjaro in the early morning hours before the clouds moved in.
KIA Lodge is conveniently located near the Kilimanjaro airport.
Each room is like a cabin with masonry walls and a thatch roof. The grounds have a lot of native plants. There is a desktop computer in the bar area for guests to use. The room was clean and so was the bathroom. The beds were firm and have mosquito nets. There is plenty of staff and they are all helpful. There is a breakfast buffet the next morning. I snacked and had coffee and it was all good.
It is my second stay here as I had a day room 2011 before leaving on the flight home (that stay was fine too).
This is a convenient place to spend the night (or day room) and I would stay here again.

Well this is a bit of a late review. I stayed here in Oct 2010 before I went on to summit Kilimanjaro.

This really was a lovely stay, and I couldn't fault it. After getting back from our Kili trek it was nice to have the day to enjoy the pool, views, and relax a bit. The view of Kilimanjaro from the pool was lovely, and a bit daunting before leaving for the trek. I wish it could have lasted longer, the wildlife around the hotel was lovely too. Exotic birds and reptiles.

The only thing that I will say, not that it should sway you not to stay, is that the internet was very slow. But saying that, it was great to have basic internet so I could send an email to family to tell them about my trip.

Would I come back? YES! I would love to come back and do another route up Kili and would be very happy to stay here again.

The KIA Lodge is located adjacent to the Kilimanjaro International Airport between Moshi and Arusha, Tanzania. I last stayed overnight there in 2007, but my group of 12 were made to feel quite welcome for several hours last month (May 2013) while awaiting the flight back to Amsterdam. The rondavels (rooms) are lovely and well appointed and the gardens surrounding them rival any hotel setting I've ever seen. The public spaces include a spacious bar area, lovely formal dinig room, observation platform (from which we bid Mt. Kilimanjaro farewell) and a couple small shops. All we needed was a place to crash and repack our bags after our Kili climb and Serengeti safari experience. Though not overnight guests, the lodge gave our group a big area to do our re-packing in, plied us with cold drinks, and fed us off-menu "pub food" to see us on our way before regular restaurant hours. No request by us was too much trouble for them.
