“Good location”
Reviewed June 5, 2013 via mobile

Located ~10min walk from the clock tower, the outpost is comfortable, affordable and gets the job done without being fancy. Friendly service staff. This is a reasonable place to start or end a safari.

The Outpost has a great location in the city and offered everything I needed. A hot shower, comfortable bed, plenty of space to relax, and amazing food all made my experience wonderful. The meals were different every day and there were many amenities that I hadn't expected to find but loved like a tv in the dining room and a pool to cool off in. The service was great and the bar had a great selection of coffee to choose from. The staff took care of my extra luggage and laptop when I went away on safari and were always around to help me. Great stay!

Room Tip: Rooms near the entrance have wifi

The Outpost Hotel was a delightful experience. My room was lovely, overlooking the pool, mosquito nets provided, and a huge bathroom with a great shower. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I was going on a safari and I was allowed to feel excess luggage in the hotel's storage room until my return. This was a wonderful service and my belongings were returned to me safe and sound. A lot of the hotel's guests were launching their climb of Mount Kilimanjaro from the hotel and an atmosphere of sheer excitement hung in the air. Mucho fun hanging out in the bar. Food was great and inexpensive. I loved the chicken curry and nan!

A nice friendly place, great rooms, very friendly staff. Ample mosquito nets (not the cocoon type!). The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and a broad range of meals prepared with care, no "slap and dash" here. All round a very nice place to rest for the night. The only complaint was our shower failed to provide hot water, which on a cold Arusha morning was a bit rough, the manager was apologetic and offered another room to have a hot shower in, however we did not have time. I would stay here again

We have been many times over the past four years as our get out of Moshi place to stay. Granted this is the down season for tourists and the time for doing renovations etc.. The pool was dirty and the whole pool area in a run down condition compared with previous visits. There was a new accomodation block and generally this was an improvement however the quality of finish was poor for such a new building with bare wires in the shower not properly sealed.

To note: the Mambo Cafe in the Lodge is a seperate concession, but need a mention. The breakfast quality remains poor with low quality vienna sausages on offer and if you want bacon, tomato or an extra sausage this is chargeble. the only thing is the egg choice which is freshly cooked but if you want an omlette expect minimal filling and planty of oil. The menu options for mambo Cafe has been changed from the multiple international choices to suit the majority to a very Indian style menu and no childrens option. In the evening I ordered food and it came incorrectly filled and then sent it back. Duing the night I developed a bad stomach which required frequent visits to the bathroom and subsequent for the next few days, not a nice experience. I will let you draw conclusions from that, especially having developed a pretty cast iron African stomach over the years.

We will not return not because of the accomodation but because of the poor menu and poor breakfast which may have or have not hygiene issues.

Stay by all means but eat elsewhere.

Room Tip: Ask for the A block rooms.

A very good budget choice in Arusha located in the former residence of Bernhard Grzimek (‘Serengeti shall never die’). Not far from the city center but in a quiet area with lots of green. Basic but very comfortable rooms offering just what you need. Small swimming pool and a very good bar (especially the coffees and iced tea). Free wi-fi. Good place to relax after an exhausting flight or to wait for your plane when leaving!

I had heard from friends about The Outpost but never had reason to stay until last night - I was really very pleasantly surprised and it was just what I needed. The rates are very reasonable given what it provides and there a many of those little extras which help to make your stay more comfortable which you would not normally expect to find in budget accommodation.

The rooms are basically furnished, but I was staying in one of the rooms in the garden and it was big, light and airy and clean. It had a big comfortable bed with a very well fitting mosquito net which covered all the bed and beyond. A lot of luxury hotels could learn a lesson or two from here about the bed set up! There were bedside lights and power points inside the net and within easy reach of the bed and I could receive wi-fi! There was a table top fan and a kettle with tea and coffee - something I don't normally see in other budget accommodation. There were plenty of towels and there was also soap and shampoo - again a touch not normally seen at budget level.

The bar/restaurant area was very pleasant and the staff were very friendly. I didn't have a meal because I had eaten already elsewhere, but the menu looked interesting and was very varied - good Indian selection.

There is a small swimming pool with a reasonable seating area around it, but unfortunately during my visit at the height of the rainy season, the pool was covered and it was not the weather for swimming!

The free wi-fi was excellent and could be accessed from the bar and from my room. The service over all was really good - I felt at home from the moment I arrived and I will certainly go back. Arusha is not my favourite place but if I have to stay here I couldn't think of anywhere better - it's down a very quiet street in one of the older, very pleasant, residential parts of town and the gardens surrounding the buildings are very mature and established - you would have no idea that there is a bustling city not too far away.

I would highly recommend The Outpost to anyone living in the area who is looking for a quiet break or to travellers who are passing through. It has the feel of an upmarket backpackers and when I was there it had a quiet vibrance about it which I really liked.

Room Tip: I would request one of the garden rooms - I gather the rooms do vary, so it might be worth asking to...
