“An Average Hotel Elevated to Very Good Because of the Staff”
Reviewed August 4, 2013

We booked this hotel because of its location at Taichung Park, a short walk away from the end point of the bus ride from Taichung High Speed Rail Station.

At the check-in counter, we were informed that some toilet amenities (eg soap, toothbrush and comb) were not provided in the room but we could obtain those that we wanted from the counter. This surprised me as I initially thought that it was a labour saving measure. But as a green initiative, it is a superb idea to avoid wastage. Guests who require toilet amenities can obtain them from the counter and the hotel staff do not have to waste their time placing and replacing these items in the rooms. Other hotel chains can learn from Holiday Inn. One of the items which I selected at the counter was a cake of soap but I found this to be unnecessary as liquid soap was, indeed, provided in the bathroom. I returned the soap to the check-in staff on my way out to the night market (a must-go, ask the staff for directions).

It was a long walk from the lift lobby to our room as it was a corner room. The room was small but we were impressed by the floor-to-ceiling windows which we understand is a selling feature of the hotel. We had an excellent view of Taichung Park.

Being a member of the Intercontinental Group’s guest program, I was informed that I would be entitled to a complimentary newspaper which I had to collect from the check-in counter. Again, this was not merely a labour saving measure but also made good sense as we would have to pass by the check-in counter on the way to breakfast which was served in the “Great Room” located beside the check-in counter, in the atrium of the shopping mall to which the hotel is connected.

The “Smart Start” breakfast was pretty standard with cereal and bread, a few hot Asian dishes and juice and coffee from machines. The best part for me was the guo tie (pot stickers) which I thought were delicious. They filled my stomach and gave me a good start to the day.

The best thing about this hotel was the staff. They were always smiling, enthusiastic and eager to please. Such a good attitude is the result of not only training but also the internalised desire of Taiwanese to provide genuine good service. I had always thought of Holiday Inn as being a generic hotel (something like the McDonalds of hotels) but my short stay at the Holiday Inn Express Taichung has changed my opinion. I will always remember it for the human touch from the staff.

This is my first time staying in this branch of Holiday Inn. The room is spacious, clean and comfortable as an average Holiday Inn, but the staffs made this branch to be outstanding.

First of all, the staffs gave us great help to arrange the transportation for some one day trip and made calls to other province to mail order some Chinese tea leaves from a tea farmer in Ali Shan (阿里山) to the hotel.

Other than that, I stayed at the hotel during the week when the typhoon Soulik (蘇力) caused a widespread damage in Taiwan. The staffs gave us the most updated information and help me to extend my stay without any problem. The best thing they did is extending the breakfast hour, since a lot of people are staying at the hotel without a choice of going out as usual.

Without the help of the staffs, my stay over there and my trip in Taichung will not achieved such a satisfaction.

Tip 1: Staff are very very friendly, perhaps i think they are overly helpful and friendly.

Tip 2: Bedrooms are very clean and tidy. No fault at all.

Tip 3: Taichung city itself is not a walking city, i suggest if you arrived at Wu Ri High speed rail, you should catch a taxi (15 mins) or Coach bus (1 hour) to the hotel.

Tip 4: About 15 minutes walking will get you to Yizhong street. There are a lot of eateries around here too, there is a oyster vermicili shop just right next to the hotel.

Tip 5: The hotel is connected to a small shopping mall, not much to see but handy when you need to get a pair of socks or knick knacks.

Tip 6: Overall i will recommend my friends to stay in this hotel but will also advise them that transportation is not very good in Taichung therefore they need to sort out their taxi money in advanced.

No other hotel chain seems to polarize the TA community as much as Holiday Inn Express (HIE). With my second visit to an HIE property- third to the HI name over the last decade- it’s easy to see why. For those who want the short version scroll to the end for the summary.

The parking garage is typical parking garage style. Anyone with a vehicle larger than mid-size would be at a severe disadvantage. Parking is free as a guest.

The first impression after the parking garage and getting to the hotel is the lobby. The Tai Chung Park HIE lobby is different. In some ways it’s modern & chic; in some ways it’s pretentious; and in some ways it’s plain and sterile. The biggest difference, and the one that makes this HIE outstanding, is the Front Desk staff. They honestly seem to enjoy their job. They are pleasant, polite, multi-lingual and unafraid to use their linguistic talents. Their patience to answer all of our questions, try to meet all of our requests and take care of each person in our party (local, foreigner, elderly) was exemplary.

When our booking was originally made, we were very specific in the requests. We arrived a bit early and had to wait for a room to be cleaned. We walked across the street for a (recommended) stroll in park. When we came back we took the elevator (see above description of lobby which applies to the elevator as well) to our floor. The floor itself also parallels the description of the lobby. But the most striking feature upon entering our non-smoking room was the sheer and utter reek of smoke! It was that strong. There was no way we could stay in that room with our health conditions. We discovered that visitors from the “Big Land” tend to ignore the No Smoking policies and laws of Taiwan. It’s clearly evident throughout the island, but none so much as in hotels. This was our first experience to encounter it so flagrantly violated.

This was reported to the front desk while they struggled to find another room in the category we booked. We tried two others. These other two also smelled of smoke, one of them worse than the first one. We chose the one with the least odor. (A note should be made that the housekeeping staff was also extremely kind and friendly throughout this ordeal although there were severe language difficulties on both ends. Overall the housekeeping staff was as nice as the front desk. This is important as it seems to reflect the management in terms of how to treat customers as well as how they themselves might be treated as employees.)

The room itself is in the HIE style- squarely mid-level in terms of amenities and style. The carpeting was severely stained, which is disappointing because it makes the room feel as if it’s dirty when it wasn’t really dirty. The dirty carpeting seems to be quite the Taiwan issue.

We requested and received a park view room. Yes the windows are floor to ceiling. But note that these are single pane glass. At night, you can hear street traffic even at the level we were. This was a bit surprising as the windows are used as a selling feature.

The beds were comfortable enough and the pillows were fine, but the entire pillow issue seems to be one that needs addressing in the hospitality industry. (Maybe it’s simply our old ‘bones’ and the fact we are the kinds of people who love our own quality pillows. We actually have better luck with pillows at lower end properties, i.e. hostels.)

The designer cute bathroom was fine, but the dual-use swinging door with its silicone edge made for some really noisy night trips. The lighting is set up such that the brightness clearly affects those in the bedroom area. Light sensitive folks should make sure to use an eye mask for those making bathroom trips at night. In addition, be careful how close you get to the frosted glass in the shower: those in the bedroom area might get a really good view with the way the lighting is situated. Depending on with whom you are sharing the room, this could be an advantage or a disadvantage.

The breakfast bar was decent. In fact, outside of the extravagant buffets (often hit and miss) you get at a 5-star property, it was the best breakfast bar we’ve had in Taiwan. You have cereal, breads, and a couple other “western” breakfast items. Eggs were only hard (soft) boiled. There were the usual hot food dishes common to Asia (more western-style lunch/supper items). A juice/drink machine and a coffee machine made it a decent way to start the day. The biggest problem though comes with the tour groups from the “Big Land.” There is never enough staff when these tour groups have breakfast: food runs out; finding a place to sit is almost impossible; dishes pile up; there never seem to be enough staff to help. This is clearly a management issue that needs to be dealt with.

To sum up, the pros of this property are as follows: free wi-fi; mini-fridge in the room (great for Tai Chung snack shopping); great mid-level room with quirks; decent breakfast; ok location; awesome staff at the front desk.

The cons are as follows: the quirky room; the breakfast issue when the tour groups are around; the smoke. The smoking issue simply must be addressed. If the tour groups from the “Big Land” are going to rule, then this will be our last visit. Taiwan has a strict non-smoking policy that took quite a long time to pass. To flaunt these rules is not only illegal it’s simply hurtful to those of us severely allergic. It’s unfair that the front desk staff has to listen to these complaints when it’s clearly a management problem. The management makes a choice when it does not strictly enforce rules, much less laws. The management makes a choice when it doesn’t have a strictly enforced NT$2,000 penalty for smoking in the rooms like high end hotels on the island. The management makes a choice that tour groups will keep the hotel running after they trash the place and move onto to the next property to trash. Individual travelers also have the choice to stay in a place that might not offer us such amenities as this HIE but at least would be better for our health. By far this is the single issue that brings the star level of this property down to 3minus.

Overall, we would stay here again because the pros are really worthy of consideration. In especial, the front desk staff (Kudos to Amber- exemplary behavior from staff) and the breakfast. But upon entering the room if we were once again confronted with the smoke issue, we would simply leave and dispute the credit card charge when it arrived.

Room Tip: Pay extra for the park view

Booked a standard room and was given 11th floor. We were told that some toilet amenities were not provided however being a member, we were given the luxury to choose those amenities and newspapers. Breakfast was included in the room package which makes it value for money, Breakfast was average with same variety for the 2 days that we are there.

The sign on the door to the gym and laundry should be bigger. We went round looking for it.
Room is clean and bed is comfortable with choices of pillows

The hotel is around 10 mins walk to the train station and 15 mins to Yi Zhong Street.

We booked this hotel because it provides a baby cot. The rooms were booked via Booking.com on 13 April 2013. On 14 May 2013 (i.e. more than a month later) and two days before our check-in date, the hotel called to inform that there is no cot available and said that they would be providing Twin Rooms when we clearly selected Queen Rooms in our reservation. We double-checked the details in our reservation and called the hotel. Upon calling them, the hotel then said they would provide Queen Rooms but still no cot. The hotel's explanation is that others have booked the baby cot earlier than us. Why did they only inform us two days before our check-in date? The level of service is appalling! First, the hotel called to inform us that they would provide a type of room which we did not request for and then informed us so late that we cannot look for alternative accommodation. We are very disappointed with the service rendered even before we arrive at the hotel.

I've stayed here a few times now and always find the rooms clean and comfortable, the beds are good and choice of soft or hard pillows is good too. If you want to sleep in late in the morning I would suggest asking for a high floor room or an inside room, as the outside rooms on the lower floors that face the street can get very noisy. The only problem with the inside rooms is they are not that big and if you open the curtains everyone else can see in to your room, so it tends to feel a bit claustrophobic.

The front desk staff are all very friendly and helpful and most speak reasonable English.
For a westerner, the breakfast is average but they seem to be catering more to the Chinese tour groups. It's a budget hotel so there's isn't any room service or swimming pool, although they do have a very small fitness room.

I stayed here in winter once and after messing with the room temperature controls for an hour, I finally gave up and called reception for help, only to be told they only have cooling, no heating. They will deliver a small portable heater to your room on request, but perhaps a notice in the room might be helpful too.

Overall it's clean and comfortable and good value for money, but don't expect a 5 star experience.
