“Excellent with a few minor glitches.”
Reviewed December 10, 2011

I stayed there for a week. I lived in an excellent double room for single accomodation which faced the sea and is probably worth the double money, had excellent all-you-can-eat breakfasts with a huge choice (you can get full for the whole day if you wish), water, tee, and fruits in the room every day. I got a huge bag for going to the beach, slippers, everything for the bath including toothbrush, comb, razor, etc. Everything was clean and I had plenty of space.
Nitpicking:
- Wi-Fi is available for all hotel guests, but sometimes it does not work.
- The closed room door was shaked by the wind whenever the winds were strong (most of the time). This sound might prevent you from sleeping. Given that strong winds are nothing unusual there, the organizers might have though of some better construction in advance.
- One can order laundry, which is very comfortable, but does not get the clothes back in the time they announce. I had to give them several calls before they have delivered it back. Once it was their fault, once it was partially their, partially my fault. But the delivered clothes were extremely nicely washed and folded.
Taxi to KHH is available at an extra cost.
Overall, an excellent stay!

I spent a few days in Kenting at the Howard Beach resort and it took a while to work out what felt weird about the place, finally I gave up and decided that the hotel was meant to be themed on a cruise ship. It may not be the case, but thats the feel you get. It certainly has all the amenities you would expect from laundry through to pools, spas and squash courts. There are wide sweeping staircases in the middle of the hotel, white walls everywhere with a blue stripe painted in the middle, staff wearing bright blue Hawaiian styled shirts top things off.

There is a ugly arcade in the basement which has everything you would expect in a amusement parlor, including bowling alley, pin balls machines etc. Its huge and opens onto a seedy looking walkway that takes you to the beach, which is straight out of Kuta in Bali, don't bother. The hotel pool is nice, just make sure you wear a swim cap.

The rooms are nice and spacious, I had glorious views over the pool and ocean. The hotel is about 10 minutes walk from Kenting town, and next to the bus stop at the Caesar Hotel. The hotel has a shuttle for 400 NTD which takes you to Zuying station in Kaoshiung.

Given the location, reasonable value, this is not a bad choice for those who want to get away for a few days, just expect a cruise ship feel and you will be fine.

Room Tip: Ask for a seaview, the sunsets are amazing

We just stayed in Howard Beach hotel for 2 days. The oceanview room was indeed clean and spacious, although styled in the 80.We had a new carpet and the rooms smelled like Carpetright.
Overall the hotel is OK, breakfastbuffet was so so and there is a funny set of furniture in the lobby with semi African, Hawaian influence.
The negative thing about this hotel is the beach, which was not clean, small and still without beds. You could rent a plastic gardentablechair and umbrella for 7 euro and sit upright the whole day. The other thing is that the staff hardly speaks/understands any English. They try to ignore/avoid you when you ask them something in English. The staff is is indeed not prepared to deal with customers.

Room Tip: I have no special tip. We had a good room with seaview

We stayed there over the long moon festival weekend in September 2011.

We had a garden room on the 4th floor. While nothing fancy, the rooms were very spacious and quite comfortable. Being on the top floor, the rooms had high ceilings - a welcome but unusual feature.

Housekeeping service was prompt and good. Rooms were well cleaned.

The hotel had a nice pool with a particularly spacious wading area which the small kids really liked. Beach towels were available at the poolside. What one missed though was the service. There is no one to take drink or snack orders. In fact drinking is prohibited in that area.

Across the road there is a beach. Its OK. Quite muddy with pebbles at the waterline, but soft sand a little farther out. Not particularly clean. There is no surf - its relatively calm. Very muddy - zero visibility in the water. You can rent chairs and umbrellas. Overall ok - put it this way, you will go to the beach because you are staying in the hotel but you wouldnt stay at the hotl because you wanted to visit this beach.

The biggest disappointment was the food. While the Taiwanese fare seemed nice, there was scant else on offer. There was only a buffet available. A bit of a nightmare if you are Desi and vegiterian. There is a tex mex restaurant near the hotel entrance but hard to get reservations and very average food. There were some options on the main strip (closeby) but don't hold your breath.

Kenting is a bit of a long drive from Kaohsiung HSR station. We later discovered that there is an airport at Hengchun - it might have been a great deal simpler to have flown.

Staff in general were quite friendly.

The property is large and was quite crowded, being a long weekend.

We had a good time. But probaby the one experience was good enough.

This resort hotel is one of three next to each other. It is spread over a wide area, over four floors, with large eating area serving local and western foods breakfast and dinner, plus a bar with entertainment in season. There is a pool, tennis courts etc, and outside lounging area. The private beach is shared by the three hotels. It was clean. Disappointing that on a private beach there was a guy charging for chairs, but its really our only complaint. Ideal for families and children, though we hate them so always go out of season. First week of October temperature was 35C, sun was baking. Good little town a five minute walk away, lots of local food and some restaurants and bars. Nearby are lots of outdoor activities - snorkelling, jet ski, etc. If you're in Taiwan and want maybe a week of sightseing around Taipei then a week of relaxation, this is ideal. Its not on the main rail line. Quickest way is fast train or fly to Kaoushung, then express coach drops you at the resort entrance. We took the scenic route via the eastern side - well worth it if you have lots of time.

I actually stayed here with my parents when they came to visit me in Taiwan.
The rooms were large and comfortable, with comfortable beds and plenty of extra places to sit. The bathroom had a bathtub which is nice for Taiwan. The rooms were very clean. The decorations were a little weird- kind of what you'd expect in the 80s in Florida? But comfort and cleanliness is much more important to me!
The pool was nice- we were there in the off-season so it wasn't crowded. As at most pools in Taiwan there's a "spa" with water jets and hot tubs. You could see the ocean from the pool deck. Note- you have to wear a swim cap in the pool. They sell them cheap at the pool, and this is standard for Taiwan but a little strange to most foreigners.
Breakfast buffet was fine- there was cereal, fruit, eggs and coffee for Westerners, and an astounding variety of Taiwanese dishes. I wouldn't buy it separately but it was included with the rooms.
There was an extremely helpful English-speaking concierge who helped arrange snorkeling and also booked our next hotel room. There was annoying piped music (same song during our whole stay) that went through the whole hotel.
To get to the beach you go through a weird basement arcade- it takes a few minutes to get through and it's very noisy even when no one is using it. Then there's a tunnel that puts you right on the beach. The beach is kind of crappy, though- not very big and rather dirty. It's a public beach, and the Caesar Park has chairs and umbrellas for its gusts but this hotel has no facilities. Definitely not the place to be a beach bum all day.
It's maybe a 10-minute walk to the main strip in Kenting where there are lots of restaurants, the night market, etc. Close by is a 7-11 and a few restaurants that serve Western-ish food. If you're not keen on Taiwan's food, I recommend getting Thai food in Kenting- it's better than most of the "Western" food on offer.

We were booked into a Mountain View room for our small escape, as soon as we got to the room; we experience some cigarette odour in the room. As soon as we brought the issue to the receptionist, they immediately upgrade us to the ocean view room. The hotel location is walking distance to night market but away from all the noise. Our package did come with the free shutter bus and 3 breakfast buffet and a dinner and a lunch. We found all the waiters and waitress are very friendly and courteous. Hope they could add some activities, such as scuba diving, windsurfing, and sailing at the beach.
