The Splendor Hotel is at 85 Sky Tower Kaohsiung, it starts from the 39th floor, and you need to switch elevators to get to the hotel. It has everything a 5-star hotel offers you. You can pay a fare to take the high speed elevators to the 74th floor View Deck in 43 seconds. Great view of the city and the harbour. Friendly and helpful staff. Unfortunately, hotel is a bit pricey and tired.

Room Tip: Get a room with harbour view.

Got an upgrade on arrival to a higher floor (executive?) with a view on the harbour. Good start. The hotel is big, situated on the top floors of a huge building in Kaohsiung. Not very convenient though as you need to change lift half way (at the front desk level). The rooms are nice and clean but I preferred my previous stay at the Grand Hi-Lai. Not really what I would call a 5* hotel but I guess for a local hotel, it's what it is...

I stayed at the Splendor for five nights while on a business trip and completely enjoyed the experience. I had a large room (20x20) with a king sized bed and large executive style bathroom. The latge floor to ceiling window afforded an amazing view of the city that stretched out across to the horizon. Hotel was convenient to shopping tower mall two blocks away. Caustion- don't forget anythig in your room- it's a hassle to go back up as the size of the elevators is small and the hotel is on the top floors of this world class tower.

At the time of my trip, the exchange rate is the US$1 to NT$30.

I traveled from Taipei to Kaosiung via the Taiwan High Speed Rail (1:36 minutes from Taipei Railroad Station to Zuoying Railroad Station) cost $ NT1490. After exiting the Zuoying Railroad station, I enter the Kaosiung Metro (MRT) at Zuoying (station R16) and took the red line toward the direction of Siaogang (paid a NT$30 fare) to reach Sanduo Shopping District (Station R8). In the station, search for the maps or signs that reference "85 Hotel" - or follow signs toward (exit #1). You will be about 2.5 blocks (400 yards) - 4 minute walking to the hotel from the MRT to the hotel front door.

The first floor of the lobby is a shopping center with multiple entrance and exits. But if you come through the main entrance (porters opening doors) then upon entering the building head to the LEFT and those elevators will take you to the hotel lobby which is located on the 39F.

I found my check in time to be quick and professional (5 minutes) and that includes an upgrade to a high floor Harbor View for additional NT$500 after paying about NT$2900 (via agoda.com) for my one night stay. Keep in mind that the rooms are all the same size with the exception of the view being different. My view on the 64 floor was pretty incredible and probably saved me a trip to the view deck (additional cost) which is located on the 74 floor.

I want to give it 5 stars, but can only offer 4 stars. The hotel is very nice and staff is attentive but not overbearing.

The pros - large rooms, clean sheets, soft linens (not Egyptian), lots of 60W 120V outlets (great for US travelers - no converter necessary), in room safe box, 37" LCD TV, fridge (containing 1 heineken, 1 kirin, 1 coca cola, 2 evian water, 2 teas, and a snicker bar - cost NT$30 - $60 per), free ethernet cable connection ONLY in the room, free wifi connection ONLY in the lobby, one bathtub as well as a separate pressure shower area, 3 phones throughout the room (desk, bedside, and bathroom), ice cold air conditioning.

The cons - I felt the beds were on the hard side - although healthy and good for one's back, it lacks luxury FEEL - perhaps for the Japanese and mainland tourist focus. I noticed the missing bathrobes in the room which I called house keeping and it was promptly delivered within 2 minutes of my call - although they only delivered one when I asked for two. I sense but can not confirm if they purposely leave out the bathrobes and force you to request for it inorder to reduce cost on their end. Lastly, they have this modern design for controlling the room lighting only from the bedside phone - although a very nice concept, I think they should offer switches as well as bedside phone control, but not just one.

The hotel offers a good variety of restaurant and bars good for entertaining business contacts to family without leaving the area if you are press for time (75 Lounge and Grill, Chao-Jiang Cuisine Restaurant, Palace Club, Formosa Restaurant, Teppanyaki, the Brasserie, and Skylounge). There is also a breakfast buffet for NT$399 which offers contentinental breakfast, as well as the Taiwan local breakfast fare.

The hotel is fairly conveniently located the MRT station which has SOGO department stores, food court, and movies. If you want to experience the Kaosiung Liouhe Night Market (open 19:00-02:00), you can take the MRT redline toward Gangshan South from Sanduo Shopping District (station R8) to Formosa Boulevard - Mei Li Dao (station R10) for NT$10. The market is located on Liouhe 2nd Road. It's not a big night market, but you can experience most of the local culture in terms of night market food and desserts - stinky tofu, pork noodles, oyster pancakes, oyster vermicelli, sugar can juice, fresh seafood from catch to cook, fresh papaya, guava, etc (too much to name)...

Also for a cab ride of NT$155, I made it to the seaport harbor area (I forget but will update), which I took a ferry (NT$15) across to a peninsula island which offered fresh catch to serve seafoods at ridiculous low prices. There's also a shopping center there focused on dried fish snacks! It's a great way to entertain for 2-3 hours round trip.

Accidentally, I extended my trip in Kaohsiung due to typhoon and stayed in this hotel for three nights. The hotel is conveniently located, good service, the room is spacious. I think the structure of the building must be very good because you feel nothing about the storm during the typhoon. It offers excellent shuttle bus service to MRT station and major shopping areas like the Dream Mall. Make good use of the shuttle can save you time and money. The breakfast buffet is superb, with great variety of food. There’s a children playing area in the coffee shop so that parents can enjoy their meals without worrying about what the kids are going to do. Certainly will select this hotel again next time when I come to Kaohsiung.
