We can view the river and downtown from the short ferry ride. Passengers on foot go upstairs and those on bikes go downstairs. The ferry takes us to Qijing Island, a touristy island, with roadside stalls, colorful rental bikes, and a beach front area.

The Ferry ride is not designed as an attration, but a mode of transportation between penisula islands. Qijing the destination is very busy and fun with seafood restaurants and street games.
Although crowed, it is a very safe and family friendly area to visit. All you need is to pratice common sense tourist security measures. Even for an adult, make sure you play at one of the many street carnival games for fun.

Kaohsiung city was the first stop of our nine-day Taiwan tour for family of four. We initially did not plan to visit Qijin (旗津) island, but after many locals strong recommendations to take a ferry ride there, we decided to make a trip.

It was Monday afternoon. After visit to Pier-2 Art Centre, we walked from Xiziwan Station (西子湾站) to the Gushan Ferry Pier (鼓山轮渡站). It was a 25 minutes slow walk, with interesting shops and eateries along the way. Also, the famous ice-snow dessert can be found near the Pier. Unfortunately, the legendary Hai Zhi Bing (海之冰) store closes every Monday.

Large groups of motorcycles and scooters zipped in and out of the terminal's gate while we were approaching the busy ferry terminal, which was simple and plain. You just need to throw a few coins into the fare collection box to be allowed though the fare gate. No tickets will be issued. The fare was reasonable. We paid only NT$50 for the four of us; two adults (15x2), one student (12), and one child (8).

We went up to the upper deck of a double-decker ferry. The lower deck was reserved for motorcycles and bicycles. The view from the upper deck was great, though the journey only took a short 10-15 minutes to get to the island's ferry pier. This ferry ride reminded me of the ferry service between Sentosa Island and World Trade Centre on mainland Singapore, which was unfortuantely terminated long ago. I felt so much sentimental longing for the past.

There are two ways to get to Qi Jing Island. One is over the water (ie, via ferry), the other is via underground tunnel. The ferry route is the more popular because its much more scenic (you can get a good view of Gushan as well as the Kaoshiung skyline) and also takes you to the heart of Qijing (ie, shopping and restaurants area, beach park).

While the Gushan ferry terminal is very basic -- just has toilets outside and a closed in waiting area, you won't have to spend long there because theferries are very frequent --- basically every few minutes. there is a fruit juice shop just next to the ferry terminal which I do recommend you try. They serve real fruit juice chilled and make it there and then. This is a very welcome relief from the weather in Kaoshiung which can get quite humid and hot.

The ferry has two levels. The lower level is mainly for people with scooters and bicycles while the top level is where most people on foot find themselves.. Also, the view is much better from up here. It is never too crowded so you can definately walk around the deck and enjoy the scenery as well a the sea breeze. You will be disappointed if you forget your camera.

It costs an adult tourist NT$15 for a one way ferry ride to the island which is pretty reasonable (about AUD or US $0.50). If you bring your scooter you will have to pay NT$20 for your fare. However you only have to pay the NT$15 for yourself if you take your bicycle. You will need to have exact change though because you put your money down a slot under the watchful eye of a ferry employee who does not give change.

To conclude, Qijing Island is definately worth a visit and IMHO the ferry is the best way to get there.

Took the ferry after a LONG day of eating and enjoyed the fresh air, and time on the water. Pulled into Qijing and got off to walk along the main street, and look into the food stalls and game vendors. Played a few mini carnival games, had a grilled corn and shaved ice, and then went to look at the ocean. It was a bit dark to see around but it was a nice relaxing walk. The ferry is cheap and quick and its a nice way to get out on the water. Its also fun to watch all of the motorbikes piling into the bottom level of the ferry and watching them drive off when you dock.
