We did not visit Sun Moon Lake, so Liyu Lake was its substitute. Rode on the boat and explored the lake. The view was mesmerizing (we went there at about 5pm) and the weather was good. However, we missed the firefly season according to the locals. If not it'd be good to stay until 7pm to catch the fireflies in action. At around 6pm there were many many mosquitoes and I left the place with many bites. Did not cycle as it was not worth it (nothing much to explore). You have to try their Drunken Live Prawns if you're visiting the place.

We visited the lake one rainy afternoon. It was a nice outlook and the cafe served hot drinks which went down well. It would be lovely when the sun is out and you can use the paddleboats.

Judging by the number of peacock and dragon paddle boats available for rent, this lake can be very crowded at times. Fortunately for me, I arrived on a rainy, misty weekday morning, so there were only a few people about, kayakers and wild birds at the far end of the lake in the ecological wetlands that has been restored. If you're not into paddle boating, go to the wetlands area and relax there, perhaps with one of the famous local papaya-juice drinks. I watched a local man preparing some betel nuts, eagles and kingfishers fishing, and heard lots of frogs croaking in the wetlands. If you want, you can look at the food ships across the road or even do souvenir shopping.

There are many little eateries along the lake. Famous eating is the the shrimp pancake. Delicious is the famous mango shake and the lake is a wonderful start to Taroko Gorge. The bus drivers we had were sensational and really great fun.

A row of shops opposite the liyu lake sell drunken live shrimps and fried shrimp cakes. You can try the drunken live shrimps if you dare. They practically drown the shrimps in strong chinese wine in a bowl and then cover the bowl with a little dish till the shrimps stop squiggling. Then you eat them.
