We've done 2 excursions with Hualien Outdoors now. Matt is a very competent guide and let's you go at your own pace. On our first trip, Matt picked us up at the hotel around 7am. He paid for a delicious breakfast at the only Canadian - Taiwan dinner I've every known and then took us to the Gorge. We passed a couple of F-16s along the way which is a good photo op. The hiking experience through Taroko Gorge was fascinating - Matt knows about the local culture, the flora and fauna in the region and finds paths off the beaten track to avoid the hordes of Chinese tourists.

We liked it so much we did a second river tracing tour with him a few months later. Very good experience. We were 6 people, which was a big group for Matt, so you know you get a personalised service. Lunch was great and Matt made sure we have every opportunity to see and do as much as we could.

We travelled in a group of 4, and together with another couple whom we didn't know beforehand, participated in this rivertracing activity. The guide Matt was very assuring and this helped to dispel any doubts that this might be a dangerous activity. In reality, it was a fun activity through and through. We jumped off some cliffs which weren't that high, though that's a subjective view. Matt also provided a brilliant lunch with an array of pastries and fruits and tea. Overall, this activity totally made our trip to Hualien a memorable one. :)

We are siblings wanting to safely experience the outdoors through hiking and camping and we figured that Taiwan's mountains and national parks would be the best place in East Asia for that. We went for the river tracing package and that turned out to be the most exhilarating part of the trip! Because Matt takes small groups, it's easier for your adventure to be personalized to match your needs, rather than going for a standardized package offered by large group tours. Matt taught us new river tracing skills which helped us traverse obstacles we previously thought was too difficult, and with his thorough knowledge of the hidden trails and safe/unsafe areas, we get to reach beautiful hidden paradises that would otherwise be inaccessible.

The guide (Matt) was excellent. We had a big family with small children as well as elderly people. Matt came up with a trail that was manageable and fun for the whole family. Lunch was great (i.e. a very nice picnic put together with a lot of effort). His in-depth knowledge of the local area was impressive. We really appreciate the effort made to engage and educate the children as well. Also, given the lack of English speaking guides in Taiwan, Matt was really a rare find.

It was too early in the season for rivertracing, so I settled for hiking and had a fabulous time. If you don't have your own transportation and time to plan out a hike, there really is no other way to see the parts of the gorge that are worth seeing than by going for a hike with Matt. A bit of a splurge for me, the two days of hiking and exploring the area were worth every NT. I can only imagine the rivertracing trip to be even more so. Matt's one of those guides that manages to share plenty of interesting info without getting in the way of enjoying the trail and the views - a real treat. Thanks, Matt!
