A winter night in the Syrian desert, in a tent warmed (somewhat) by a wood burning stove. Delicious chicken and rice, dates and olives from the garden, NOT a tourist trap but a genuinely unique dining experience. We came to Palmyra for the sites, not expecting great food, so Jameel and the Garden were a delightful surprise. Thanks to the great reviews that led us there. Note: business is slow in February so he may not be open - call ahead and do dress warmly.

“Literally an oasis of calm, simple good fresh food and attentive service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 9, 2010

This little restaurant looks extremely humble from outside but once inside you cannot fail to be charmed by the attentive owner. All the tables are outside at different levels leading down to the oasis plantation that is at a lower level than the dry dusty road to the ruined city. The menu is not extensive but everything is cooked to order with great care. The owner will take you on a tour of the oasis to see and learn about all the different fruit trees that he cultivates.
Do not be put off by the wording of the sign outside that advertises a swimming pool of sulfuric water. This just means that the pool is fed by a natural spring!

“Superb home cooking in lovely desert garden is great value.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 9, 2010

We found this place by accident as we walked from the museum to the Bel Temple and
stopped for lunch. We were so pleased with the food and the setting that we returned in the evening. Jameel the owner cooked us one of the best meals we had in Syria. His chicken "mansour" with rice was delicious and generously portioned. No alcohol, but the fresh orange juices are so good it doesn't matter. The date palm garden provides a delightful place to eat and all of this for a very reasonable price. Well worth the short walk. [On the opposite side of the road to the Zenobia, on your left walking from the museum] Thanks Jameel for such a good time !
