Owner description: Swazi village visits are offering a unique experience for travelers who want to meet the local people in a non touristic environment. We have our home set up in the village of kaPhunga about 55kms away from Manzini town. Here you will have the feeling of living in the village and also with out being an intruder and the people are very friendly as you walk in the village people would be happy to say Sawbona (hello). You can go for Swazi home visit, and see the set up of the Swazi family and make use of your basic siSwati language which your guide would have taught you on the way. You can also visit the local primary school and meet the kids depending if they are busy, usually you will have a chance to tell them where you come from and share what ever information about your country of which they are always very eager to learn and also teach you more about our country Swaziland. An overnight stay is well recommended since you can taste the Swazi traditional food in the evening, sit by the fire and tell some Swazi stories and or some ghosts stories. This offers a wonderful stay in Swaziland and you make friends for life both young and old.

Myxo first came under our radar whilst doing some research on Tripadvisor. We wanted to visit a genuine Swazi village, not experience the “manufactured" cultural village tour (dress up in national costume for photos, watch and participate in dancing etc) which we had on a previous visit (so make sure you don’t confuse this operator with other cultural tours being offered on Tripadvisor). We weren't entirely sure what to expect but went with an open mind. Email communication was smooth and prompt, as were the pick-up and drop-off arrangements. Myxo himself is a larger than life character, very warm with a big smile, highly articulate (with a superb command of English) and he was perceptive to our needs and willing to be completely flexible.

Myxo's village, Khapunga, was a fair distance from where we were staying (Milwane Game Reserve), maybe an hour and a half's drive, though to be honest we didn't really notice as we were deep in conversation and already learning about the Swazi way of life. En route we stopped at a supermarket (if it hadn't been a Sunday it would have been a street market) to pick up provisions for lunch. At least half the journey was on gravel road which was slow going but enabled us to enjoy the Swazi countryside and people watch. Don't imagine that a Swazi village is anything like an English one - because there's so much land space families live in what I would loosely call compounds so a village is spread over a wide area of several square kilometres.

Eventually, after stopping to greet lots of people, we arrived at the heart of the village. I had wanted to visit the local school but as this wasn't possible on a Sunday Myxo suggested that we go to church instead as there was a special service taking place and most of the villagers would be present. Arriving with the service in full flow we were "quietly" ushered in, only to be given VIP treatment and shown to the front row of seats causing a mini seat shuffle to take place! It was a non liturgical service and Myxo was certainly right when he said it would be like no other service we had known. At the top table were around 20 ministers from different denominations. There was a spontaneous response from the audience in the way of praying, chanting, singing, dancing, shouting "hallelujah" and at one point shimmying around the room. One of the evangelists gave a very animated sermon. At this point my son and I were introduced to the congregation and then (yikes!) I was invited to say a few words.

We stayed about an hour and then made our way to Myxo's place. It was in a stunning location, high up with 360 degree views across to Mozambique. The compound consisted of several huts all serving different functions. Here we were greeted by the rest of Myxo’'s team in the form of Bobo (with the toothpaste ad smile) and Sphelele . We sat in the "granny" hut and talked out everything Swazi- the king, politics, housing, education, mob rule, polygamy, Aids, tradition and culture - it was also interesting to hear Sphelele's views and to get a female perspective on things. Then we ate a tasty lunch which Bobo had prepared on the open fire followed by a visit to a neighbour's house where again we were warmly greeted. We saw how a typical family lives and how they are self sufficient, growing their own maize (pap is the staple diet) and keeping their own cattle. With time pressing we took a short walk to a vantage point to take in the views before commencing our journey home.

We thoroughly enjoyed our day and felt richer for it, having learnt much about the Swazi culture and having acquired some new friends. Thanks guys!! We also learned that things we'd read beforehand like Swaziland being one of the poorest countries in Africa and being one of the most dangerous to drive in, were completely untrue

I think its a great shame that a lot of tourists just pass through Swaziland on their way to different parts of South Africa. It is well worth spending a few days here, the people are so friendly and it is a beautiful country. ( See my other posts on Reilly's Rock hilltop lodge and Mkhaya game reserve). It"s not practical to do a village trip like this unless you are staying at least two nights. Note that Myxo also offers overnight stays and had we known about this we would have definitely gone for this option. I would highly recommend the experience and definitely the charm for us was in the laid back approach which made us feel that we were spending a day out with friends rather than participating in a guided tour.

It is always a great feeling when you see or learn that you have made friends just by the simple things in life, sharing with those who are more interested in other cultures finding what they want in their travels and we are proud to be one of those people that put a smiles into other peoples faces, but they in return do not only put smiles in our faces they make our hearts warm.
Thank you guys for your kind words, greeting from your Swazi friends(Bobo, Sphelele, Myxo)

After visiting a lot of countries in Africa we really felt that Swaziland was very unique. Wonderful people and landscape. In Manzini we got an excellent cultural tour arranged by Myxo. We did a day tour and he gave us an outstanding guidance in this great country's cultural life. We can highly recommend him and his cultural tours. At once we felt that this man is doing something good here, not only for his own, he is taking care of others too. We really liked visiting the school and meeting the people in the village. We can highly recommend him and his efforts to make a difference.

We have recently had a Swazi Cultural day tour with Myxo and we cant recommend him highly enough. We were staying at Reillys Rock Hilltop hotel and Myxo picked us up from there - he was fantastic. We had a wonderful day seeing the real Swaziland that tourists don't often see. Myxo is very informative and interesting and we learnt a lot about the Swazi way of life.

Dear Norma and Terry, thank your for your stay in our house in the village, we are glad that you had a good time with us in the village. I (Myxo) also had a great time sharing stories and my country. If ever you are around again please do stop by.
Needless to say that it would have been good to stay for the night to have a better feel of the community.

We highly recommend Myxo and his tour services in Manzini. We contacted him via email and arranged a pick up from the Manzini airport and a tour immediately to follow for the 3 of us (2 adults and our 8 year old). Myxo was friendly, informative, interactive, punctual and gave us a great day tour to the Swazi cultural village, Swazi Candles and Artisan Craft Market, House on Fire Music Theatre and Park and the scenic mountain outlook at subset overlooking Manzini. The tour lasted about 5 hours and all of us enjoyed it. He dropped us off at our hotel at Summerfield Botanical Gardens, which in itself is a great place to stay or visit. The rate was reasonable and we wished we had stayed longer in Swaziland. Overall--we recommend Myxomatosis without reservation.

I am also glad that you and your great family had a great time in Swaziland even though you had so little time, but as we" all say half a loaf is better than no bread at all". I hope your travels were safe and made it home safe.( you will have to pay a fine for letting out the secret about my name :))
Take easy.

My husband and I visited Swazi as a two day extension of our SA adventure and were so thrilled that we decided to do do this and that we picked Myxo to be our guide. We met Myxo in Manzini with no trouble, spent some time together in town and at the market before heading with him to the village of Matjana to meet the local people, learn more about the culture and breathe the amazing fresh air. It was such a refreshing day - we visited schools, we had dinner with the neighbors, we hiked to take in the incredible views and landscape, we slept in a traditional beehive hut and we did all that with Myxo who felt more like an old friend than a hired guide. From Manzini it was a very easy drive in our rental car to Kruger NP (we had NO problems taking SA rental car into and out of Swazi). I highly recommend making a stop in Swazi part of your itinerary and based on our experience, I know Myxo will work to customize an itinerary based specifically on what you're looking to do and learn.
