“A very pleasant stay”
Reviewed January 21, 2013

We phoned through on the off-chance of a room as all the other quality hotels seemed booked. Based on LP recommendations we were pleased to get a room.

The hotel and grounds are spotlessly clean, tidy and well managed. The room's facilities are good value for Negombo which is expensive by Sri Lankan standards anyway. The location is very quiet and a short stroll from the beach and restaurants. The pool is clean and a delight to use

We had a comfortable stay and are very pleased overall. Thank you.

Just two small issues though: the owner and his wife had a very public shouting match in the pool area and a large oriental cockroach lives under the sink in the kitchen area of Jasmine suite - I guess the second thing is to be expected but not the first?

Very sorry to say that this was a big disappointment for us as the start of our holiday in this beautiful country. Room was fine, although very expensive for the USD60 they charged for the night (where an extra 10% service charge and 15% tax was added on top of that). When we tried to speak to the Dutch owner about this she tried to shame us that this was the same everywhere in Sri Lanka and that it was all our perception. This could not be any further from what we have experienced everywhere else where we paid about half of this for about the same level of luxury. Staff was nice and her Sri Lankan husband as well, but she really ruined our stay for us with her quite hostile and non flexible attitude. Prices for transport and other services were also a lot higher at the hotel in comparison to the tour operator just down the stree. We just could not wait to leave here and cut our stay short leaving the next morning. Maybe the other travelers have had the luck to stay at this place when the Dutch lady owner was away, because we do not really understand the raving recommendations this place gets when someone is this unfriendly to their guests.

After a long flight, this hotel was our first impression of Sri Lanka and absolutely not representative for the extremely friendly Sri Lanka people. We arrived late in the morning, but our room wasn't ready jet. That can happen, but a little bit attention and extra care should have been nice. The swimmingpool isn't that much (old, hard wooden beds without soft cussions) and although the room was spacious, it was across the street in the building where the owner, his unfriendly Dutch woman and their family lives. So it feels more like a homestay than a pleasant place for relaxing the first days so please find something else and pay a little bit more of significantly less. The dutch woman wasn't flexible at all, bossy and gave us a very bad first impression of this beautiful country. They overcharge everything and a taxi to our next stop (3 hours drive) was 30 (!) euros more expensive than a tourist office/ gueshouse 30 meters next to them. How arrogant can you be! We booked for several days but decided to leave as soon as we woke up the first morning. We don't write bad comments a lot, but this overpriced place really doesn't deserve all the good recommendations a the various websites and in books like the Lonely Planet.

We stayed at Villa Araliya for our last two nights in Sri Lanka before heading home. Our triple room was called Tourmaline and was basic, with three single beds but we were happy with it. The apartments looked much more stylish. The pool was a great place to relax and prepare for the journey. Breakfast was good but we didn't eat at the restaurant so can't comment on dinner. Hot water showers were great and we were happy with Stephanie's and her staffs service.

A simply stunning place, the turtle outside our room was different, yes real! they have stray dogs and cats adopted but rabies vacinated, nice if you like animals! Off a side street so nice and quiet. Beds rock hard unfortunatley and we didn't have any hot water but they put on electric water so is was alittle warm. Very young staff.
So good and bad, oh forgot the cockrock that came whizzing out from the room, tucked in the mosi net very well after! Breakfast was really half hearted only break and no tea, most odd.

We stayed one night here on our last night in SL as we had an early flight to the UK on 31st December.

We stayed in the Jasmine suite, split over two floors and a beautiful room - living room and kitchen downstairs, enormous bedroom with four poster bed and bathroom upstairs.

The attention to detail in our suite - from the beautifully tiled floors to the bed linen and gorgeous furniture - was fantastic and we were only sorry we had just the one night there. The swimming pool is quite small but was good for a few lengths and as with everything else, was spotlessly clean.

Breakfast in the outdoor, poolside restaurant was okay - nothing specal given the price of the room but good enough with particularly nice coffee.

I have read the last couple of negative reviews about staff and taxis - we were there less than 24 hours so had little contact with the staff who were all pleasant enough - they had our reservation on arrival and checkout / payment was fine.

We were quoted 1,700R for a taxi the hotel could book so arranged our own TukTuk for 800R and this collected us for the approx 25 min trip to the airport - there's not much traffic at 7am!

There are plenty of restaurants within a 10 min walk of the hotel and whilst its a short walk to the main strip of bars and restaurants, its was a safe walk in the evening / dark.

We'd thoroughly recommend this place to anyone looking for a good place to spend their first or last night in SL.

This was a one night stay before an early airport departure, but when we arrived they claimed to have no knowledge of our booking (very odd as it was the last night of a tour organised by a local travel agency and everything else had worked perfectly). As we had had a long drive and were tired this was really irritating, then they eventually turned up the paperwork with an excuse about the owner taking to payment and not putting it in the book.

The room was quite nice if a bit Spartan and lacked shampoo etc but maybe they had got it ready in a hurry for us. The bed looked hard but was in fact very comfortable. There was some aircraft noise at first but it didn’t go on all night so wasn’t an issue.

We had dinner at the hotel as we were on a half board basis but then they tried to charge us having by this time miraculously found a booking sheet with us on it but only down for B&B. They also charged us extra for a cup of coffee which had been included at previous hotels as well as automatically adding service charge to the beer we bought. Dinner was pleasant but rice and curry was exclusively vegetarian – apparently if you want seafood you have to order it. However they did bring additional helpings. As we left early in the morning they did make us a packed breakfast – cheese and tomato sandwiches with very little cheese, but I suppose at least they tried.

The small pool looked very nice but we did not use it as it was raining.
I am not sure that I would recommend this hotel – it’s at the far end of Negombo from the airport, for example. I would be concerned that my booking had not been registered, and the staff just didn’t seem very on the ball – and considering it’s in the most touristy area we visited the level of English they spoke was very poor.
