After the disappointment at the marsh, I went to the Fish Market. There was lot of trading going on, from big fish to small fishes, from wholesale trading to retail trading. This place was very interesting and you would see lots type of fishes, though they are dead. There are two fish markets in Negombo, one is the bigger one which you need to visit early in the morning like 6 am as it shuts down at 10 am. The other smaller market is open most of the time.

Visiting the fish market, despite the smell, was the highlight of my day in Negombo. The fascinating sights of the local fishermen, selling, chopping and drying the fish is simply amazing. We were lucky enough to meet the famous Joachim, who has featured in a Rick Stein cookery show, and he entertained us while showing us around the market. We went after 12pm and it was the perfect time to visit because things were winding down. A must see!

To a working fish market ,most fisherman just got on with their day to day lives ,remember it is a working market therefore it is noisy ,hot and busy. Yes we also met the tout who had worked with Rick Stein ,but we had our own guide who could give us the information we needed.

Authentic atmosphere in a real live local fish market w
We visited this market in the early morning to really understand the volume of the market.
Don't forget, it's a market, so the smell is bad, sanitary is not perfect and sometimes the picture itself is not lovely.
But still worth a visit.
