“Very suitable for a coffee or a light supper”

Note: This review is for the RESTAURANT only. If given the option, I'd call it "good" rather than "very good."

We stopped at the Avenra a few times during our short trip to Negombo. Once, because my other half had a late meeting and I was on my own, so our lovely homestay hosts took me here and made sure I was well taken care of by the staff. I was, and had a quiet dinner outside by the pool one evening. The next morning we both stopped for coffee and fruit juice to break up the long walk into town.

To be honest, I'm not sure we'll return very often, as there are so many other places to eat with much more memorable food. But the Avenra has its advantages: for starters, it was CLOSE to our homestay, so extremely convenient when we were too weary to face even another kilometre into town! It was also a good stopover on the way into town, as the hotel is just about at the halfway point between our temporary home and central Negombo. And the setting really is lovely, particularly at night -- nicely lit garden by the pool and just far enough off the Mirigama Road to be tranquil.

The service was a bit slow at times, but generally friendly (there was one fella who didn't seem to want to smile very much), and ladies dining alone will feel quite secure.

Food hints:
There are two types of chips on the menu:
"Home-made chips" and just plain old "chips." If you like stodgy (and soggy) English-style chips, order the first. If you want something more like what you'll find in Belgium, go for the unmarked chips (which happen to be frozen, but they're brill).

The mixed salad is nice and fresh and has a lovely mix of flavours and textures, and they do a good masala omelet.

Sitting at the hotel dining room awaiting our departure and quite sad to leave.
This hotel is beautiful, the rooms ,opulent, andt he level of service we have experiecedfrom everyone has been excellent,The food has been wonderful, exeptionl value for money.
The hotel boasts a lovely swimming pool and large garden area and although not located by the beach, this does not detract from our experience here.
It has been a pleasure to stay here and we are honoured to have been treated so well.
thankyou to all staff.
would recomend this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: all rooms of same quality and facing swimming pool and garden

This hotel is situated in a nice garden setting, with accommodation based around the pool, it's on the eastern side of the town away from the beach area. The rooms are comfortable, & clean, the food is good, and the restraunt staff are plesant & helpful. But that is about all I can say in a positive light on the place - the reception (front of house) staff are apathetic to the point of "I don't care, you only pay my wages" attitude. I was there over the Wedding season (December/January) and got the impression that residents were a pure side-line to the income earned from three or four noisy wedding functions per day, noisy discos, and generally an abysmal sleeping experience. Reception staff were of little help with any 'tourist' information, no city maps, information, nor even able to show me on a map where the hotel was - they didnt even know where the train station was or the Dutch Fort!
No internet access, none available locally, although there are plenty of Internet Cafes in the Beach Resort areas. The final irony was when wanting a tuk-tuk on new years day to go to the airport they claimed they were all on holiday and I could use the hotel car for 1500R, I walked to the gate, got a tuk-tuk within a minute for 500R.... Thats the sort of place it is.

Room Tip: Any when theres no wedding going on until 0130hrs!
