Stayed two nights to enable us to be in Galle when all the tourist buses departed. Ideally located and actually mainly very quiet. Nice terrace bar and small restaurant area above pool.

Menu limited but the best food we had in Sri Lanka, with Asian fusion menus. Fair wine list too. Breakfast excellent.

Had a garden room, which was a bit on view unless you closed the shutters all the time and had rather worn and basic fittings. Upstairs rooms probably a better bet.

General manager very hands-on (though we did notice outside tourists being allowed into the pool area without supervision when he was not around). Recommended.

The best hotel is Galle is undoubtedly the Galle Fort Hotel, which serves a mean club sandwich and Hendrick’s and tonic, and the ground floor rooms open directly onto the tranquil, verging on sub-tropical, gardens and swimming pool

Room Tip: Garden room 3 is the one

Of all the hotels we stayed in on our tour of Sri Lanka, this was the least impressive. The hotel appeared dirty, with sticky tables and chairs and dusty old furniture. It had a certain charm, being in the Dutch style and the pool/courtyard area was attractive. The breakfast however was very disappointing and the service slow, even by Sri Lankan standards!! We had one evening meal which was average and over-priced for what we got. We had a lovely meal the next night at the Fort Printers.

The Galle Fort Hotel is one of the oldest and most well known hotelsl in the fortress town of Galle and we were booked in for 3 nights. Sadly it did not live up to our expectations. We found the the bar and sitting area dark and gloomy and desperately in need of some inspired interior decorator to come and give it a makeover. The interior courtyard with its little pool was quite pretty with decorative pots of bright flowers but as we had a ground floor room at pool level, our door opened straight out onto the pool and you had to to circumnavigate around all the guests lying on beds so their was very little privacy. We would have liked a room on the top level but they were all taken so we had to make do with this dark and uninspiring room at ground level. The bathroom area was ok with good shower and closing doors between the bedroom but the whole feel of the room was a bit oppressive and in need of some renovation.

We had dinner outside on the area overlooking the pool and although there was very little choice, virtually a set menu, we thought it very good, and a delicious espresso panacotta! The boys serving were friendly and helpful and all trying their best! The breakfasts were fine with lovely fresh fruit and selection of English or Sri Lankan breakfast - I wish I'd tried an 'egg hopper' but am never that hungry for cooked stuff!

I think the Galle Fort will have 'to pull its socks up' as the Amangalle 100 yds up the road is quite stunning and yet still maintaining that old Colonial feel.

We did not stay at the Galle Fort Hotel but went there to have a quick lunch. It was a good choice because we got to sit on the verandah of an old colonial bungalow, overlooking a beautiful, well kept garden and swimming pool. The service was quiet and friendly and the food we ordered was good. They accommodated a request for a vegetarian option on one item on the menu, even checking if cheese was acceptable !
I'm glad we went there. We could cool off from the intense heat and sun outside but not in a sterile air-conditioned place.

If you ever go to Galle this is a place you must try and stay at if you can get in. This hotel has only 12 bedrooms for clients. It is in Church Street and from the outside does not look up to much but inside it is a totally different story. We stayed in a Garden room complete with 4 poster bed. Step outside your room straight into a lovely pool surrounde by beautiful shrubs and trees. This hotel only does B & B but you can still dine there in the evenings. It is worth having an evening meal here as the food was excellent. The hotel is an oasis in the midst of the bedlam which is Galle

This is an ideal place from which to explore the nooks and crannies of Galle Fort. Based in old warehouses Romans face onto a good sized outside swimming pool and there are verandah s for some of the rooms/suites. The rooms vary and the ones on the swimming pool level have large windows complete with window shutters. Furniture is antique and mat require some careful handling. WiFi works.

The staff is superb. One of the managers was very kind to us. Breakfasts were excellent with coconut pancakes a highlight. Fruit and juice were available. The bar is on the front and there is the option to people watch outside or lurk inside. It is best to dine out not because of the food quality but rather to take advantage of the great restaurants.
