“interesting but not amazing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 16, 2013

Went here for the day from Mirissa on the local bus, which took about 45 minutes. We walked round the town, which is very pretty and has some very nice shops and cafes, and historical buildings, however it did feel like the most touristy place we visited in Sri Lanka and the prices in the cafes and restaurants reflected that. We also couldnt understand why there seemed to be an unusual number of italian cafes/restaurants, bizarre! good for a day trip, but im glad we didnt stay there

What a wonderful and soothing environment to be in. We spent about two hours walking in the area and enjoyed every bit of it.

“Picturesque”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 14, 2013

We visited Galle twice. Once on a Sunday evening to walk around the walls at sunset mingling with the local families who turn out in strength to enjoy the sun dropping over the Indian Ocean horizon and to take the air. Young men and boys play cricket on the areas below or adjacent to the fortifications and the whole scene is very atmospheric. Following sunset we then went for a cocktail at the Galle Fort Hotel at sat in the colonial style bar sipping our drinks. On another occasion we visited Galle fto wander the streets in daylight enjoyiong the architecture, doing some shopping and to have lunch in cafe. All-in-all a very agreeable experience.

“Colonial buildings in Galle Fort”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2013

I love the old colonial buildings in Fort and especially the old library..they still have old, dusty leather bound copies of books by Byron, etc. enjoyed chatting with the elderly librarian! the whole place is small and walkable and I felt safe walking around on my own. It can get hot so I would aim to walk around the walls of the fort in early morning or evening and catch the sunset if you can.

I did, however, feel that the place, namely hotels, guesthouses and shops were very touristy but there was one old shop that had beautiful and reasonably priced linen clothes.
