This charming hotel built in 1860 stands majestically on a hilltop amidst lush tropical gardens, and flanked by the ocean called the Magalle Bay. It overlooks the UNESCO heritage listed iconic Galle Fort just 3.4 km by road (10 minutes max.), and the mythical Rumassala mountain.

Closenberg offers an authentic and unique heritage hotel experience; colonial splendor coupled with old world charm and hospitality. It's also the home of its owner, Kumar Abeywardena whose warm and friendly disposition makes you feel like a welcome guest in his home than a hotel. His staff, who have served him and his guests for over 30 years have a similar disposition as their master; genuinely warm and will go out of their way to make your stay as pleasant as possible.

This is the perfect place for those who prefer old-world charm and all the eccentricities that go with it. Like in the good old days when the pace of life was much slower and no stress, Closenberg offers that too- everything happens here in slow motion, including the waves in the ocean.

The food here tastes like a delicious home-cooked meal with a lot of love added to it. The rooms on the upper floor facing the Bay of Magalle offer the best views. The infinity pool though small is delightful. The poolside deckchairs with soft and comfortable cushions and the bar next to it is my favourite part of the hotel; it's surreal at sunset and beyond.

I will gladly shift Closenberg to the No. 1 slot on the list of my favourite hotels in Sri Lanka.

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor facing the ocean.

The staff was very accommodating and attentive. The hotel seemed to be once a magnificent place with its architecture and design. Unfortunately it has fallen into disrepair and has not been taken care of. The room had a beautiful view from a larger than normal balcony, the room itself spacious, the bed comfortable. However, the blinds did not roll up from the windows to see the view and had to manually tie them. bathroom had a bad smell, and there was dirt and dust buildup on the fan blades, the light sockets and everywhere. Cracked bidet, floors. A tired beauty. The food in the restaurant was passable and sometimes good. Such a shame for what was once opulence.

We loved this wonderful place. The staff made us feel like family members. The rooms were sunny and clean. Very comfortable and quiet place. Perfect place from which you can base your trip through the south. We would recommend this hotel to all travelers.

This charming hotel from the 1800s is located on a hilltop with magnificent view of the ocean and the beach. Our room had ocean view, with a cozy balcony.

The infinity pool was very nice, one of a kind. The view from the pool was amazing.

The staff was nicely dressed with bow ties, giving the little extra to the coloniel atmosphere.

Food was good, and the service level was above all expectations.

Alltough the hotel could use some maintenance, it has so much charm you’ll forget all about it.

We would book this place in a heartbeat if visiting Galle again!

Been there initially for lunch and pool. The building is just amazing. Unfortunately the maintenance is very poorly done. Waiters and staff wore dirty clothes. Unskilled bartender. I recommend to visit the place for a drink as we refused to stay for lunch.
