“Feel like home”

My wife and I stayed at Sun House for two nights and had a very pleasant stay. The General Manager and staff were very kind, friendly and helpful during our stay. My wife got a cold after spending a few days in Ella, and the General Manager provided her with the right herbal treatment to ease her headache and sore throat as well as calling an Ayurubedic doctor who visited our room within a couple of hours. The local staff helped her prepare Ayurubedic medicine. We felt Sun House like our home. The only negative was the first night when we did not get good night sleep because several guests were talking loud till 1:30 in the morning at the bar near our room. Otherwise, the hotel is very peaceful and we could enjoy a variety of animals and birds visiting the garden in addition to the hospitality of hotel staff. We hope to stay there again in the future.

Lovely rooms & ambience plus friendly staff lived up to its reputation. However the food served over our two day stay was completely uninspiring. The meal on our second day was awful: overcooked fish, plain boiled rice and a stewed wet green vegetable. I had to resort to an omelette, as there is no alternative menu. There was not a hint of salad, no decent bread and no options. I was truly disappointed as we had booked to stay because of the food as recommended by Rick Stein.

We stayed in Hibiscus room at Sun House and enjoyed a couple of lovely days at this wonderful boutique hotel. The place is a Planter's House which has been lovingly restored and is manicured and buffed up each day by its fleet of staff to be one of those places which refuses to bow to modern conventions but sticks out for it's own ways and revels in its idiosyncracies. Why else paint the floor white throughout, inside and out? It somehow bespeaks a land where labour is still cheap enough that no compromises need to be made.

The rooms are beautifully and tastefully decorated, and have a pleasing accent on comfort and space alongside practical furniture, much of which is antique and colonial in style. The bathroom has the inside/outside shower effect which feels such an indulgence and great fun to use. The common spaces provide free wi fi, books and magazines to browse, a small souvenir shop, a bar with delicious cocktails and nooks and corners to enjoy lazing and quiet time sinking into deep sofas or sitting among the frangipane trees in the garden. Even here we saw mongoose sauntering in the garden and monkeys playing in the trees, all with the charm which lifts your holiday into the category of wouldn't-miss-it-for-the-world-and-want-to-do-it-all-again.

BUT if you are going to focus on one thing only in this hotel it must be the cuisine. The emphasis is on using fresh ingredients grown in the kitchen garden to the side of the hotel on a little terrace below, and these are brought together in a house menu each day which has both Asian and western influences. Top flight chefs (like Rose Gray of River Cafe some years ago) have come here to encourage the cooking to allow the freshness to shine through, so dishes are difficult to pigeonhole as "Sri Lankan" or "Western" or even "English", but have a local authenticity and delight. We toured Sri Lanka in a pretty upmarket way for three weeks and definitely ate our best meals here. They would have held their own anywhere in the world - so if that's something you look for then this is the place for you.

If you get the chance, book the Cinnamon Suite on the first floor, the best room on the island and with an unparalleled view.

This hotel was NEARLY wonderful, and the location is breathtaking, but it just feels a bit tired. The decor and lots of the fittings look a bit scruffy, with stains on the sofas and smelly old books in the library. It probably didn't help that we had just been to a very plush and fresh-looking hotel (The Kandy House) and a very new place (The Wallawwa) just before .

We still had a very good time, but spent most of it on the beach - we would have been very disappointed if we had been kept indoors by the kind of weather we had in Kandy. The service was attentive if a little slow, and the food was very good,

We (wife and I plus two boys aged 4 and 2) stayed at the Sun House for one night on our way from Colombo to Tangalle. The staff could not have been more welcoming. They were great with our (manic) little boys. We had a delicious dinner and a lovely time there. For anyone visiting Galle, we would recommend staying there.

My husband and I stayed in the Sun House for a few nights on our honeymoon. We booked the Cinammon Suite, which took up the top floor of the main house.

The suite was beautiful and incredibly romantic. There was an outdoor bath, inside bathroom, large bedroom and living room. This is not 5 star luxury, but more like staying in someone's house. The hotel is a little rough around the edges and rustic (i.e. no aircon in the cinammon suite, plenty of lizards in the rafters,), but that's what makes it so charming and worth the price to stay. It was a great experience.

The curry on the first night was fantastic. The manager, Henri, puts on a great spread and we had fish curry, with okra, beetroot, carrot and dahl curries, popadums, sambals, rice etc.

The tea served with cake in the afternoons (or whenever you wanted some) was the best we'd ever had. Ceylon tea is delicious.

The staff had plenty of recommendations for us...places to go and things to do and they were very helpful in arranging diving, cycling and other trips.

This was my favourite hotel of our trip as it was unique. The atmosphere was sleepy, relaxed and friendly.

I found the Sun House to be over priced and would not stay there again. We have stayed in many hotels in Sri Lanka and this hotel did not meet our expectations. The room was basic with lots of mosquitos, the hot water was so hot that myself and husband burnt ourselves. Food was very good however, but pricey. I found the charge for my children's breakfast to be extortionate (in no other hotel we have stayed in 3 years in Sri Lanka do you have to pay for young children to eat breakfast). Staff were okay but again I have experienced much better during our stay in Sri Lanka. Very disappointed and would not recommend as do not think it is good value.
