“Quick drink and all was fine”
Reviewed February 5, 2014 via mobile

Nipped in for a quick drink only, after reading about it in our guide book and whilst waiting for our train back to Kalutara.

Quaint little place with very friendly staff and a step back in time with whitewashed walls and elephant polo photos in the bar.

Comfortable surroundings and only about Rs 300 ish from the train station, we asked for "dicks bar" but the tuk tuk driver looked a little confused as it appears to be better known as "Sun inn".

“Cute little bar adorned with elephant polo pics”

Good drinks, efficiently served whilst waiting for dinner at The Sun House. Cocktails, beers and a limited wine selection too.

“The Most Romantic & Delicious Meal at The Sun House”
Reviewed February 11, 2013

While we sadly weren't able to stay at the Sun House as it was full (i believe there are only 5 rooms so book ahead to avoid disappointment because this is undoubtedly where we'd stay when we return), we did make sure we booked in for a meal one evening and it was probably our most romantic meal in Galle.

We took a tuk tuk from Thalpe, where we were staying to be nearer the beach, to the more quiet and secluded area where The Sun House is nestled.

On arrival, through the castle like gateway, you are shown into the most beautiful, magical courtyard. Lit by fairy lights with cozy tables and chairs in and around, you are welcome to relax with a pre meal drink for as long as you like - i got the distinct feeling they are relaxed with time. We had been longing to try out Dick's bar and weren't disappointed. The bar tender was so wonderfully warm and charismatic and could mix a mean cocktail too. There's something totally old school and colonial about the bar itself and the wall of famed writers was pretty exciting too.

After soaking up the atmosphere in the courtyard (with only one other couple having drinks) and enjoying evry sip of our seriously delicious cocktails, we decided to go through for dinner taking in a glimpse of the beautiful hotel property itself. It's definitely worth a little wander around.

Now perhaps because every meal has a certain romance to it when you're seated outside at night under the stars, or perhaps because of the amazing stillness around the property having come from the more noisy hustle and bustle of Thalpe, or the fact there were absolutely no other diners that night as they all happened to go out - but it was honestly like being on a movie set and was most likely THE most romantic meal my husband and I have ever had.

We were shown to to our huge table which was isolated from all the other tables, bang in the middle of the main central pavillion area with central views down to the stunning swimming pool (which looked very inviting!), surrounded by trees and nothing but star lit sky. It felt so private and intimate and the staff who look after you just appear and disappear so subtly it's hard not to feel like you're own bubble world!

Sri Lankan curry was on the menu and what followed was just a total feast for the senses. Dish after dish of amazing different curries were produced, vegetable curries (you should have seen the size of the cashew nuts!), prawn curry, chicken curry, Dahl that just melted in your mouth, fish curry, poppadum pieces to scoop up all the delicious sauces, more vegetable curries, beetroot dishes, coconut sambal, weird and wonderful things I've never seen or tasted before and every mouthful was a total joy. There was not one dish that neither of us disliked so I really do mean feast! We both have pretty healthy appetites but as much as we'd have loved to have finished every morsel (and we did try), it beat us somewhat and yet when the dessert came out and i thought no more, i was presented with a simple scoop of the most delicious basil and lemongrass sorbet which I pretty much inhaled and it had some holistic effect on me as it totally refreshed the palette and gave me a real energy buzz having felt the sleepiness come on after our great whacking feast of curry. We were not rushed to pay or head off once we'd finished, again - it appeared to be all our time preferences which was lovely - so we just remained there soaking up the beautiful atmosphere of The Sun House, finishing off our drinks ( we even got to witness what looked like a Sri Lankan Mongoose visit the property!) and then had a wander into the lovely sitting room looking at all the wonderful art work and maps of Sri Lanka.

While the meal was definitely on the more pricey end, as a really special night and for some seriously excellent food in a very intimate and romantic environment, i would say it's worth every penny and you should not miss out on the Sun House. More importantly - if you can - we would highly recommend staying there for 2 nights (although we can't speak for the rooms but based on teh rest of the hotel, have a feeling they'd be just as special). So if you're in Galle for a few nights, don't miss out and make the trip there - even if it's for a cocktail at Dicks - It's simply stunning in every sense of the word.
