A local resident was quick to recommend we try La Clochette, a new cafe down a small side street within the ramparts.
Contempoary design, French chic and Sri Lankan hospitality all come together under the chef from the Ivory Coast. Her buttery brioche was being bought by a steady stream of customers as we sat sipping our coffee.
As the day moves to lunch, and then dinner, the chef works to marry African and Asian cuisine to create an interesting menu of fruit juices, seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes.
As delicious as breakfast, our evening meal was served in the secret courtyard at the back, shaded by small trees and cooled by large fans.
We now just need to try the lemon tart served with a fresh lime crush drink on the side that is also popular with the cook's regular visitors from Colombo.
