Description: Hi We opened this restaurant recently, coming form France. It is located in the Fort of Galle : 3 Parawa Street (a small road off Pedlar street, near the Remparts ; ask for the French Café as many people know. We are open from about 8:30 am till about 10:00 pm (however depending on the season and some special national days off in Srilanka). We work with local products and local young staff we progressively train : it is also our commitment to the country and we do our best with what we find in the place ; we don't pretend anything else. We serve BREAKFAST, BRUNCH, LUNCH, TEA/COFFE TIME, DINER. You will find (all home made in our bakery) : croissants, brioches, lemon and chocolate pies, fresh juices, good espresso and tea, etc..., as well as some typical French dishes as Coq au Vin, Sole fish in Riesling wine sauce.. Also some "family" food as Pasta and Pizzas. We also create new dishes from time to time. PATIO IN THE BACK SIDE, INTERNATIONAL MUSIC, FREE WIFI . Thank you :)

“Baguettes, Brioche & We Were Back Again Later”

A warm and crusty, freshly-baked baguette, butter and mango jam served in this pretty cafe is the perfect start to any day.

Having discovered Sri Lanka has beautiful bread we were disappointed to learn that there is no bakery within the walls of this historic fort location.

A local resident was quick to recommend we try La Clochette, a new cafe down a small side street within the ramparts.

Contempoary design, French chic and Sri Lankan hospitality all come together under the chef from the Ivory Coast. Her buttery brioche was being bought by a steady stream of customers as we sat sipping our coffee.

As the day moves to lunch, and then dinner, the chef works to marry African and Asian cuisine to create an interesting menu of fruit juices, seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes.

As delicious as breakfast, our evening meal was served in the secret courtyard at the back, shaded by small trees and cooled by large fans.

We now just need to try the lemon tart served with a fresh lime crush drink on the side that is also popular with the cook's regular visitors from Colombo.

“An unexpected venue”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 26, 2013

Not realising that on Fridays many Galle restaurants shut down in the afternoon for Muslim prayers, we wandered around hungry looking for a bite. We had a list of recommended places - all shut. God heard the rumbling in our tummies and guided us to a side lane - aloha, an open restaurant!
The place looked interesting and we walked in. The menu consisted of just the type of food we were looking for. To sum it up quickly, great food, excellent service. Would certainly recommend this restaurant to all you hungry people out there. I believe from the 1st of January it will be known as 'Le French Cafe'. Enjoy!

“Quaint little cafe with great French cuisine”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 26, 2013

I tasted the best food in Sri Lanka at this quaint little cafe. The food comes in huge portion and the best part is they taste delicious! Great atmosphere to chill and the place comes with free wifi. The staff were attentive and friendly and everything here was great. Simply love this cafe and I kept coming back. It's located at the west end of Pedlar Street and take note of the little signboard that says French Cafe. Highly recommend this cafe over any of those recommended on guidebooks.

Nice little restaurant overlooking a part of Galle Fort. Good food, reasonable prices. We had fried rice and fried chicken, both very tasty.

“Great salads, cozy atmosphere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 23, 2013

Really enjoyed this spot. Its on a quiet street, has nice atmosphere and the food was incredibly fresh and satisfying, especially after two weeks of Sri Lankan rice & curry (which I love, but its nice to have a break sometimes). Normally, I'm hesitant to try western fare in Asian countries, but this was so good, I went back for three nights, tried the Ceylon Salad, Ceasar's Salad and a beef sandwich. All were delicious with hearty portions, the staff was friendly and the service was exceptional, would highly recommend.

Prices are cheap by western standards, normal for Galle Fort prices, pricey compared to local food on a backpacker budget, but still very good.

They are opening a new location closer to the lighthouse. You are missing out if you don't try it!
