What a nice surprise to find this newly built luxury villa in Galle, rather by incident. Great hospitality, a house built far above Asian standards combined with German "Gründlichkeit" with lots of attention to details everybody likes. We really felt back in colonial times imbedded into tea trees, superb equipped roms, home cooked food, a great pool and charming people. We cant agree more to the comments of previous reviewers and wish Elke and team all sucess for the future. We will definitely come back. Danke Thomas & Annika

This is a beautiful retreat which has been built with attention to detail using quality local materials and set in a serene environment. A large variety of local wildlife including many exotic birds and monkeys can be viewed from the balconies, pool and on walks though the tea plantation. Rooms offer luxury appointments and are decorated beautifully. Although the nicest part of staying at Niyagama House has to be the staff, nothing is too much trouble, they are a wealth of information and more than happy to help/advise on day trips, transfers and will source any other information required by guests. I loved the yoga and meditation classes while my husband enjoyed the beautiful pool and learning about Sri Lankan vegetation & culture from the staff. Definitely a place you will want to return to!

Room Tip: All rooms are lovely, although some have private balconies.

Firstly, the pictures on Trip Advisor does not do justice to this fabulous place. Elke, hope you are reading this!!

When we were looking for a place in Galle, we stumbled upon Niyagama through Agoda. It was a new place and had no reviews on Agoda. But the pictures on the website made us take a closer look. The location looked good, the architecture of the place elegant and more than anything else, the rooms looked like having a "character'. We thought of taking a chance to book this place though it is away from the beach.

We called up Elke and booked Sapphire as it was larger and could accommodate three of us. It was easy to locate the place and arrived late afternoon from Hatton in Hill Country. We were surprised at the first look at the "House". It was fabulous. Painstakingly built with minute details by Elke and Chaminda, the house seemd a perfect hideaway on top of hillock amidst a small tea estate. Elke met us and briefed us about the house. For the first time in Sri Lanka we had tender coconut water for a welcome drink which was refreshing!

The house built in traditional Sri Lankan architecture with a central courtyard - with the finely carved Buddha statue - and high ceiling is elegant. The amount of wood - including lovely wood carvings - used in this place is to be seen to be believed. It reminded me of a traditional family houses in coastal areas of Karnataka and Kerala in South India.

We were led to the room on the first floor. Each room in the house is named after the gem stones for which Sri Lanka is famous for. Our room was Sapphire. A spacious room with a Kings size and queen size bed, this was luxurious. We were fascinated by the bedside lamps and the beautiful ceiling fan. The large french windows give a fabulous view of the valley outside. The bath room is spacious and good to see that the commode and the bath area was separated by a low height wall.

The beds are spacious and comfortable. The wooden cots have an antique finish and done by local artisans. Large storage area makes it comfortable to stove your stuff away.

Though every part of the house is nice, the best part should be the large pool set amidst greenery. The place around the pool is perfect for lazing around during the day.

The dining area is in the open corridor overlooking the swimming pool and the valley. With large columns, the place gives you a feel of eating in any heritage mansion in Europe.

Let me now come to food. This is perfect. There is set menu covering Vegetarians and Non Vegetarians. The menu is carefully chosen to provide best of local cuisine. For the first time in Sri Lanka, we had excellent vegetarian meal here. I don't have to comment on Non Vegetarian food as our friend was gorging on that! Our advise. Please keep it this way and don't increase the choice lest you compromise on quality. The pricing was also appropriate.

We spent new year's eve here and the staff including Elke and Chaminda had made special efforts to make it a special day for all of us with amazing array of fire works, great wine and food. It was a very elegant and simple new years eve we have ever had.

Let me now come to people whose passion this is. Elke, who has designed this place is a great host. She with her husband Chaminda makes this place a "home away from home". They have built a beautiful place and i have no doubt that their passion will continue.

Yes, if you are looking for something on the beach, this is not the place. If you are looking a hideaway to relax, refresh and chill, this is the place. However, the beach is not very far off. You can always go there during the day or in the late afternoon to get a dip and comeback. Galle can be comfortably reached within half hour from here.

I have no hesitation in recommending this place. It was the best part of our Sri Lankan sojourn of eleven days.

Room Tip: If it is a large family chose Sapphire. The double rooms with balconies are excellent options for co...

Dear friend,

finally there is time to also respond to your wonderful words here on Tripadvisor!
What can I say? Your feedback is unbelievable! We are still working on all your good suggestions and ideas, to make Niyagama House even better (for example the signboard on the street ;-). For sure it is also because of your fantastic words, that we had many wonderful guests in the last two month. It would be a pleasure to welcome you again! Many greetings and blessings to all three of you, Elke

We could only spend one night there, but we felt extremely good. Niyagama is a brand new guesthouse with a beautiful decoration, nice and clean rooms and very friendly staff. It is away from the busy city, but only 20 min. away from Galle which you can reach with the guesthouse tuk-tuk service. The location in the natur, the amazing view and a very nice pool invites to relax. I would love to come back soon.

We wrapped up our 2 week tour of Sri Lanka by treating ourselves for two nights at the Niyagama House, just outside Galle. This place is fantastic! It's a beautiful, brand new B&B with gorgeous grounds, a phenomenal pool area and great staff. The owner is very accommodating and helpful. She even offered to teach a morning yoga class which, had I not been so lazy, I would have taken her up on and hope to return for. This was by far the nicest place we stayed over our 2 weeks, and I highly recommend it. It is about a 20 minute drive to the Old Fort Area of Galle, but they can easily arrange transport. It was great because we could explore the Fort and then return to enjoy a peaceful afternoon by the pool. Can't wait to go back!
