Thought this would just be a ruin as I hadn't read up about it. What a lovely surprise to find the fort encloses lovely shops bars and restaurants. Well worth a visit.

I thoroughly enjoyed my walk around the old town of Galle. It was like a walk back in time with so many historical monuments and buildings. The fort, the rampart, the clock tower, the lighthouse, the old churches, and the old shops and hotels are worth the visit. I have written a blog on this. Do visit it at

Galle fort is one of seven forts build by the Portuguese, and Dutch in the 16th and 17th century. This is best preserved in Sri Lanka and also along the spice route which used to go from amsterdam to java Indonesia. Really worth a visit..There is an historical museum in lighthouse street that tells you more about the history and it's is free. The other two museums you have to pay for. All the old dutch families have emirated to Australia now round the time of the civil war 30 years ago. The best public toilets are at the old dutch hospital.. and of course there are 86 jewellery shops in the fort now..times are changing in Sri Lanka. Enjoy

We stopped at Galle fort on a day trip and spent the morning walking along the outer walls. It has some lovely views of the coast. Nice place to visit if you want to wander around.
