Owner description: The history of Galle extends thousands of years to biblical times. In more recent times it was a prize to be possessed for western traders in search of wealth and glory. Its beautifully preserved colonial Dutch fort with its quaint city with cobblestone streets within is a place time forgot. Close by are magnificent beaches, rainforests and other attractions. It is definitely a fascinating place to visit.

Have visited several forts and I was having a problem and was wondering why all the surroundings of the fort are being inhabited and renovated. I thought the idea of having a fort is to preserve as is. Perhaps I am wrong on this one. Unless you have a guide to explain, there is few I see that piques my interest such as some buildings.

Our accommodation at Ocean View was mediocre. Ate at Galle Forte Hotel and food was top class. Ate at Mamas and food was good.

Although lined with many shops, this is not the ideal place to buy souvenirs as prices are extremely high compared to shops in the rest of Galle and Sri Lanka.
The streets make excellent photographs. Some of the most amazing buildings and samples of the art deco era.
Good swimming at the lighthouse area. The rocks in the ocean make a breakwater almost like a natural lagoon. The water is very clean

We stayed in Galle Fort initially for one night but liked it so much we came back for a coupe more nights later in the trip. We found good accommodation there that was reasonably priced and we also found that eating out was not too expensive either. There was a very cheap place, Lucky Fort, that was excellent. Also Crepeology was very relaxing and had an interesting menu. There are plenty of gem sellers if you are interested in that sort of thing. You might come across the odd person on a scam but it's not more likely than a lot of other places in country.
When we were there in November there were not too many tourists and there was plenty of space on the beach and in the restaurants. We were also there over weekend which bought plenty of locals into town to walk along the walls and visit the restaurants etc. This made for a good atmosphere and we interacted with plenty of the visitors.
The fort walls and layout are interesting and there is a company doing walking tours around the walls and other parts of the fort explaining the history. The walls are a little worse for wear in some places and there is a bit of litter in other places, but it's cleaner than a lot of other parts of Sri Lanka and the local businesses are doing there best to keep it nice. There are a couple of museums though we were busy enough and did not visit these. All in all we recommend Galle Fort as a place to visit for at least a night and a day.

This is like a town within a town. Dutch built on a rocky promontory. The old walls are intact and you can walk around on some of them. Lovely blend of buildings in the fort from the original Dutch church, to art deco types too. Spent around 4 hours walking around soaking up the atmosphere here, which was lovely.
Well worth a trip if you are in the area.
