“Great value”

The guest house is centrally located inside the Fort and the rooms are basic but clean. There is a nice verandah on which to take your breakfast and to hang out. Ravi and his family are great hosts. The breakfasts are simple but filling. This is a great choice at this price level.

situated in the middle of the fort; dark wooden furniture and white walls - looks beautiful; family managed guesthouse with familiy livingroom on the groundfloor; AC is available but not neccessary; breakfast is served at the balcony on the first floor while you can spot the people on the street; we stayed only one night for US $ 45 here; we reserved a fan room, but got a free upgrade for an AC room

To get excellently concise accommodation at a reasonable price is something not to be taken for granted in Sri Lanka. Countries like Thailand and Vietnam have them in bucket loads, but Lanka still has a ways to go.

My wife and I, along with 2 other friends, stayed here for 3 nights in the 2 rooms with AC. For what we got, this place may have easily been the best value of our whole Sri Lankan journey.

Ravi - the man whose family owns this place, is in my opinion, miles ahead of the game. Having worked in the hotel industry, he has intelligently distilled what are the most important things travellers in this price bracket would look for and delivered them without the additional overhead that a more expensive place would include (and charge for). AC, WiFi, sparkling clean and easily cleanable, wet room with hot water shower, poster-bed with mossie net... if you need more amenities than these and are happy to pay for them, Galle has plenty of offerings in the next price brackets above.

The conversion of his family home was well thought out with the preferences of the traveller in mind. The upstairs verandah is a fantastic place to hang out (it photographs great) and they made sure most of the rooms are on that level. The family live downstairs but there is a separate/adjacent door for access. Do keep in mind this is still a family home - I think they would appreciate it if you left your shoes by the base of the stairs. By the time you make it to Galle, you are most likely living out of your sandals anyway so it shouldn't be a big deal.

The original building itself is quite beautiful and their renovation highlights it just right. Most elements that are nice as painted white are painted white, some dark wood touches, polished concrete floors - a classic combination overall. But if everyone were to follow this aesthetic formula? Things might start to get a little bland, but heck, at least you`d have a reliable looking standard of accommodation across the board.

Speaking of renovations, I`ve found Galle to be the Sri Lankan epi-centre of the renovation/conversion buzz. But all is not gentrified yet, there are still some buildings in Fort that retain the patina of their age... for now.

I've also been told that Galle is a living and working city. Is this only if you consider Fort and the new town together as a whole? Maybe I might have missed something but from my perspective it looked as if it was only a matter of time before the Fort turns into a museum-city in the mould of Venice. There was however an active and interesting lawyers/magistrates zone in the south eastern area of the Fort worth a quick peek into. I hope they stand their ground lest the whole place be turned into an amalgamated mass of boutique accommodation.

Nothing against high-end or foreign-owned hotels, I like many of them and like to stay in them when I can. But balance is important and I appreciate what Ravi has managed to pull off here - both for the choices of individual travellers as well as for the sake of the whole picture. What kind of place would this be without real Sri Lankan families still living here and owning a stake of it?

The location is indeed bang in the centre of the Fort - you could not ask for better. However, this is mainly to do with the luck of the family and I prefer to focus my comments on what can actually be done. In this sense, I applaud Ravi for lighting the way for an under-served segment of the market, wish him every success for it, and hope he continues faithfully within the ethos of what he started.

Lovely clean guest house right in the heart of the old town. Ravi is a really excellent host and was extremely helpful, friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was a real highlight. Delicious traditional Sri Lankan fare. We stayed here for our first few nights in Sri Lanka, a great place to start an adventure from.

We stayed for three nights. Like other reviewers we thought Ravi was the perfect host. His house is perfectly restful and the rooms very comfortable. We should know because due to late booking we had to change room twice. The position is central in the Fort area and it should cost no more than Rs 100 to reach by Tuk Tuk from the train or bus station. Excellent breakfasts. Room rates are $45 per night without a/c or $10 more if you want to burn up the environment.

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms are best

I spent several nights at this property in February, and found it clean, charming, and comfortable. Ravi is a wonderful host, and has anticipated nearly all of his guests needs. The terrace is a pleasant spot for dining and relaxing, and the Sri Lankan breakfast is delicious.

My only suggestions for improvement are to strengthen the wifi connection, which was sometimes too slow or unreliable to stream video, and to put a small refrigerator in each guest room.

The guest rooms don't have televisions, but that's just as well, since the noise would probably travel from room to room in such a small property.

All things considered, Pedlar 62 is the best value in the Fort.

Room Tip: Avoid the upstairs room with only a high window and no view. It has a large bathroom, but the other...
