“Had staff follow me around, very annoying”

Maritime Archeology Museum
Reviewed January 26, 2014

Although billed as a "modern" museum, this is not the case. The museum itself is in one big room and can be seen in all of 10 minutes. What annoyed me about this place is that when I entered, I had a couple of staff members constantly follow me around the place attempting to give me their commentary on the items. Not needed when there is sufficient information to be read on sign boards.
I really hope the staff stop doing this as it really ruined the experience. The items on display are pretty impressive, although fairly limited in range.

Visiting museums in developing countries can be a great disappointment - but this is different: A fine exhibition, presented in a way that more og less lives op to modern western standards. A short movie gives you an introduction to the rich finds in countless shipwrecks around the Southern cost. The exhibition mix impressive objects from the marine excavations with a wider view on how the the Sri Lankan culture and history has been influenced by shipping and foreign trade and occupations. Very interesting!

While the displays are well preserved, it really is limited. Even if you read every display it will take you less than 15 minutes to complete the entire museum. Not worth it if you have visited Maritime museums in Europe (Amsterdam) as those in Europe have similar displays, but of better quality.

This place just like all others is going through serious renovation work. Nice place to visit and know a little history about Srilankan Navy.
