“Does not need a makeover”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2010

We have just returned from our second trip to Lighthouse and definitely not the last. It is, quite simply, the best hotel we have found. Please remember that this hotel was built around the sea and the rocks, it is the whole point of it's beauty, the fact that it is so in tune with nature. It is a bit silly therefore to expect it to be hermetically sealed.
The food and drink is more than 5 star quality and the spa and beach pool are again the best we have found.
The bed and pillows are, again, at least 5 star quality, only to be beaten by Ritz quality bedding.
This hotel is an oasis, a sanctuary and a place that you will want to retun to. If, however, you are looking for a carpeted hotel with kareoke and beer for breakfast, you are probably better off sticking to all inclusive Spain. This is hotel that is loved and appreciated by experienced travellers and I hope they keep it up. By the way, the internet room is very damp, but the sun was shining, the sea was blue, it didn't really matter.

We chose this hotel so that we could combine a relaxing time at the end of a busy holiday in Sri Lanka with celebrating our silver wedding anniversary. Its location on the western side of Galle is just a short tuk-tuk ride away from Galle Fort and the centre of Galle. When you arrive, do not be put off by the less than impressive entrance. Once you step inside the sculpture on the stairs to the rooms, restaurants and bars makes it clear that this is not a run of the mill hotel.
We stayed for 5 nights at the hotel on a bed and breakfast basis. The rooms were large and airy. We did have trouble with the airconditioning in one of the two rooms that we occupied but combined with the ceiling fan this was not really a problem and the hotel tried hard to fix it. There was a bath and a walk in shower. We understood from the hotel manager that the hotel intends to refurbish the rooms and bathrooms although we did not see any pressing need for this to be done. The beds were extremely comfortable.
The hotel has two restaurants. One is used for breakfast and other meals while the other is fine dining. For our wedding anniversary we ate in the fine dining restaurant which was lovely. We were one of only two couples in the restaurant on that evening so it felt very exclusive. The food was excellent and not as expensive as I might have expected. The only downside was that the champagne we ordered was not available so we resorted to a perfectly acceptable bottle of French sparkling wine. The hotel provided us with a cake. Otherwise we ate lunch in the poolside bar which was good and not very expensive (by UK standards). We ate dinner prominately in the restaurant which was a buffet on three of the four nights we ate in the hotel. The buffets have a regional theme and were very good. My teenage sons especially enjoyed Indian night.
My only gripe with this hotel was that when we arrived in Sri Lanka about 2 weeks before we were due to stay in this hotel, our tour operator contacted us to advise that the hotel had overbooked and was asking whether we would move to a different hotel for our last 2 nights. As we had moved around a lot during our stay, we decided not to do this and advised our tour operator at that time. On the day of our wedding anniversary, one of the hotel staff approached me while I was at the pool and told me that we were having dinner in the fine dining restaurant (which my husband had arranged as a surprise) and that the hotel was organising a cake (which took that surprise away as well) and then asked me again if we would move. Once again I reiterated that we did not want to do this. It subsequently transpired that there was a major maritime conference in the hotel (which neither our tour operator or the hotel had mentioned) and the hotel was rather pushed to give the level of service it had otherwise given to the conference and the other guests. Added to this, it also had weddings to deal with. Had I known that all of these event had been going on, I might have chosen a different hotel. At breakfast on our last morning (which was the first morning of the conference) breakfast was served in the fine dining restaurant and the choices of food were more limited. There were significantly fewer staff who struggled to clear tables etc. My advice is to find out if there are major events at this hotel as were were told by the assistant managed that the hotel wanted to do more of this sort of thing.
I had a pedicure and a facial at the spa. Both were perfectly acceptable but probably not quite to the standard that I would expect in the UK. The spa itself is very nice and relatively new as we understand that it was completely destroyed in the tsunami. There are two very nice swimming pools with attentive staff providing loungers and towels. The larger pool near the spa had the best temperature of any pool on our trip and both were kept very clean. You can't swim in the sea as it is too rough but you can walk along the shore for a short distance.

Dear Guest,

First of all I want to thank you for choosing Jetwing Lighthouse, for your special holiday and Please do accept my apologies for the embarrassment caused to you because of a mismanaged situation and rest assured will never be repeated in the future.

Maritime conference (with over 30 top ranking naval officers from around the world) is very rarely held out of Colombo and our usual banqueting facilities are located away from the guest areas of the hotel.

We very much value the privacy of all our guests. With years of experience in banqueting our service staff is very confident in managing such events and for some reason if it appeared as if you were rushed during meals or neglected, then please accept our sincere apologies!

We have enhanced our dining experiences by adding more variety in the form of seafood and also planning to introduce a new A la carte menu to the main restaurant. We have very constructively noted all your comments and they are much appreciated. Once again thank you and hope to see you again, very soon.

Yours Sincerely,
General Manager

Loved our hotel and enjoyed Sri Lanka, the people are incredibly friendly and polite and all religions seem to live in harmony. However, I won't stay in Galle again as there nothing to do in this sleepy fishing town. Everything closes really early, even the hotel bar closes at 11pm at the latest.

Galle - Is a pretty little town it is very safe but is 4 Hours away from the airport! it also seriously lacks any good eating places outwith the 3 main hotels. Also be careful not to get stuck within Galle Fort after 5.30pm because as soon as the sun goes down, the whole place turns into Village of the Damned with rabid stray dogs chasing the locals. the dark, narrow unlit streets only add to the Stephen King factor.

Galle really needs to invest in street lights and build pavements. Walking anywhere becomes perilous as you have to walk along the road amongst speeding trucks, buses and motorbikes and avoid angry stray dogs (i have never seen so many stray dogs)! Also most places of interest such as Yala etc are 4 hours away. In future i would stay closer to Negombo there is more to do there.

If you can limit your travels outwith the hotel to daylight hours then it is a very pleasant place to stay in with some great jewellers such as MM Ibrahim in Galle Fort and Laksana Jewellers - we bought $1300 dollars worth of pink and blue saphires which were a real bargain.

Food - Sri lankans are big on rice but do not eat any flat breads (unlike the rest of asia) Food is great with the exception of the Rampart Hotel which was not nice. Places we would recommend would be the Royal Dutch cafe - Fazal is a lovely old man and this place is a must (great Rotis). We also ate at Mamas Place, the Villa Hotel in Unawatuna and the Happy Banana Bar Unawatuna all were great places for food with my favourite being the Happy Banana Bar. An average meal for four people will cost 5000 Sri Lankan outwith the 3 main hotels.

The Weather - really hot but with the usaul short burst of rain for 1 hour every day.

The Galle Jetwings Hotel -

not the best location. it is 40 minute walk or a 8 minute rickshaw ride into Galle town and hours away from the major attractions of Galle. You are better off staying at the Galle Fort as it is in the town centre.

Food - Food is amazing at the Jetwings hotel and reasonably priced the dinner buffet is 2000 sri lankan per person, excluding drinks and is of a very high quality. Each night has a different theme but Sri Lankan cuisine is also available alongside the themed meals.

Internet - it is free but rarely works in the rooms and when it does it is really slow. Even the business centre has slow internet connection.

Service - Check-in was really slow despite the hotel being virtually empty. After a long flight and a 4 hour van ride from the airport, all we wanted to do was go to our room and shower. Service at the hotel is great overall but patchy. Very few members of the staff speak adequate english so billing mistakes are frequent. You also need to call house keeping several times to get items such as a broken TV fixed. these are minor items that did not affect the overall experience.

The Pool area is great and a good place to see local wildlife such as chipmonks, monitor lizards, the Grey langur Monkey and various smiling lizards however there really is no beach.....just huge rocks and crashing waves.

Top tip would be to ask for a rickshaw driver called Mendis to organise any trips. You will pay half the price charged by Walker Tours or the hotel. If you ask the rickshaw drivers downstairs they will contact Mendis.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for spending your holiday with us and appreciate your overall positive comments.

For a safe mode of transportation we suggest that you use our hotel recommended taxi line, where the prices are listed at the travel counter . When leaving the hotel instead of walking as the roads are narrow and under construction specially with the longest bus stand in Sri Lanka.

Though the night life is limited there are safe and interesting places to go and kindly ask the front desk staff for guidance.

With the addition of our cocktail bar on the veranda starting at daily at 7pm, Coats of Arms bar will stay open until the last guest leaves. We are also pleased to have opened our Seafood restaurant, giving guest additional dining options in the hotel. Apart from the Saturday night BBQ we also have introduced an Asian theme night followed by a cultural show, on Wednesday’s.

If there was a particular billing error you like to address,do kindly contact me on wester@jertwinghotels.com and I will personally attend to the matter immediately.
If you are looking to stay close to the town of Negambo during your next visit our sister hotels in the area will be more than happy to accommodate you.

Yours Sincerely,
General Manager

Never met so many friendly people that did all they could to meet our expectations. Good food. Nice rooms. No unexpected costs (for use of tennis court and rackets, use of gym...). Beautiful building.
Just be careful for the taxi drivers as soon as you leave the building.

Dear Guest,

I am pleased that you enjoyed the Jetwing Hospitality and the gastronomical choices offered during you holiday with us. Our spacious deluxe rooms with the magnificent view of the Indian Ocean are a creation of the legendary architect, Jeffery Bawa.

Pleases drop by the hotel travel desk and use the hotel recommended taxi service on your next visit, which I hope would be in the very near future.

Yours Sincerely,

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 26, 2010

Our family stayed at the Jetwing Lighthouse on the outskirts of Galle for 5 days, and on the whole we really enjoyed our stay. We found the food both in the fine dining restaurant and the more informal restaurant of high quality, both at breakfast and dinner. We mostly had lunches by the pool, and the quality was equally first-rate.

The overwhelming majority of hotel staff were very friendly and always seemed to do their best to please. I never met one grumpy or curt member of staff. Because we had a suite, we were assigned a “butler” who seemed to be everywhere. He served us at breakfast, cleaned our room in the morning, served us lunch at the poolside, and then yes you guessed it, was there to wait on us at dinner time. He also arranged the little things that we needed (e.g. towels when we ventured out of the hotel to visit another beach). This impressive gentleman really did make our stay seem more luxurious, although with all due respect to him, we wouldn’t have minded a different face occasionally.

The views from the lobby terrace and the rooms were amazing: sand, rocks, coral, palm trees and crashing waves. We had 2 rooms which were very spacious, clean and comfortable, albeit somewhat dated. Both rooms had balconies, and the balcony of our suite was larger which also had a very comfortable lounger as well as the table and chairs that the other balcony had. There was free wifi access to the internet.

Both pools were large, clean, generally quiet, and we never had a problem finding a good space around them to relax. The pool staff were courteous and helpful.

Now the (admittedly minor) grievances …

There doesn’t seem to be a clear reception system, there is a desk downstairs where the cars arrive, and one upstairs staffed by very pleasant ladies whose knowledge of English is not great. Even the hotel was not always sure who’s responsible for what, and there is no concierge as such.

When we arrived, we were escorted upstairs, asked to sit down and given welcome drinks. After 15 minutes of waiting without any explanation, I approached the reception desk, and asked why we were waiting, and suddenly I was told our rooms were ready. I had an equally long wait when checking out because despite producing a confirmation email from the hotel and my credit card statement it took them some time to confirm/believe that we had paid a deposit before arriving at the hotel: strange, considering that I couldn’t have booked in the first place without paying a deposit.

When we were first shown our rooms, all the shutters were closed. So we were ushered into very dark rooms which appeared musty at first glance. The receptionist who showed us the rooms had to open the inter-connecting doors with some difficulty. It was left to me to open the shutters and blinds to let the light in. (But what a fantastic view once I did!) There was a bunch of bananas on a plate in the double room, but no welcome fruit basket in the suite. If I was running the hotel I would make sure that I present the best first impression.

The suite was initially a disappointment, mainly because the living room did not have a comfortable sofa to sit in (what’s the point of having a suite otherwise?). Allegedly, in keeping with the oriental theme of the suite, there was a very hard very high wooden “sofa” which was less comfortable than a seat in a Colombo public bus. The best the hotel could do was to swap the comfy sofa in the other room for ours. Lucky we had 2 rooms booked. The tiles in the bathroom of the suite were of the basic plain white type and they looked old and in places broken and stained, while the adjoining room’s bathroom had much nicer tiles/decor. Many of the light bulbs in the rooms were blown, and one of the safes was already locked; so we had to sort out a few (minor) issues on our arrival. The air-conditioning was quite loud. Combine this with the considerable sound of the waves crashing against the rocks, and the beeps from the air-conditioning unit every time there was a power cut (and every time the power was quickly restored) during the night, and the light sleeper may have problems.

My biggest disappointment was that the hotel beach was not suitable for swimming. The hotel advised you not to go in the water at all “ because it was the rough sea season”; but the main reason was that the beach was mostly rocks and sharp coral. You would need to travel 20 minutes by car to get to a good beach. The next disappointment was the painfully slow internet service.

Although the service was very eager, friendly and always accompanied by a smile, it was not consistent. We had to remind the hotel on a few occasions about replacing used toiletries and towels. My pet hate is to be treated differently during the last 24 hours of a long stay at a hotel, and unfortunately we did not have a turn-down service on the last night of our stay. On the same evening, we noticed a moderate leak under a sink in one of the rooms and we reported it to the hotel, but nothing was done. I expressed my concern about both these issues after coming back from dinner (after travelling several times between the 2 receptions to find a duty manager): although very apologetic, there didn’t seem to be any plan or urgency of response. I asked that they at least replenish the bottled water supply in the rooms. We waited one hour and nothing happened, so eventually I put on the Do Not Disturb signs and went to bed. The next morning we found some bottles behind our door.

As I said these are not major grievances, but I thought I should mention them to inject a modicum of reality into some of the glowing reviews of this hotel. OK it’s not a 5-star hotel by Dubai or Far East standards, but I think the Lighthouse is a very good luxury hotel, staffed by wonderful courteous people who do try and do their best. Anyone who is looking to relax for a few days next to a stunningly beautiful shoreline and enjoy good food and a great ambiance should definitely consider staying at the Lighthouse. Our family certainly had a pleasant, enjoyable and relaxing time in this hotel.

Dear Guest,

I am grateful to you for the detailed review and your compliments to our chef and the staff in general. I have conveyed your compliments and comments to the entire team.

Please accept my apologies for the disappointments you encountered and you can rest assured that these have already been addressed, corrected and taken very constructively for the further advancement of the service standards of the hotel.

Except for the months through December to March, the sea is rough and not recommended for swimming because of the underwater currents. We recommend our guests to use the two pools during these times.

As per your comment, policy has been changed and now we have the windows open on arrival.

Since your visit we have opened a Seafood restaurant and also introduced a variety of treatment choices in the SPA, I am sure Jetwing Lighthouse will interest you during your next visit to Sri Lanka. We look forward to welcoming you back.

Yours Sincerely,
General Manger

That is what this hotels needs!

We just came back from our honey moon which we spent together with two friends at Sri Lanka and at Lighthouse hotel.
Actually, we had the unfortunate experience to stay at this hotel, misleaded from its site and comments at Trip Advisor, which really amaze me!
It was one of the worst hotels ever!

The whole hotel needs an extreme renovation....it needs to close for several months and fix it all over again! Everything is too old, almost ruined, covered in mould! Painting is falling all over, doors and windows are too old and loose, all wooden furnitures in the rooms or outside are scratched, sofas and chair pillows are stamped everywhere!
After a heavy rain our ceiling started dripping. In the internet room you could not stand from the smell of the mould!

On our arrival our room was dirty with dust, spots in the bathtab and footmarks (of wet feet) on the floor! When I asked for a 2nd cleaning, they didn't even understand why I was seeing it dirty!

The service was awfull too! Whatever we were asking, food, drinks, room service, was coming an hour later and after two more calls!

Anyway, it is hopeless to write all that happened! The hotel is not a 5 star hotel!!! See the pictures and decide for yourself if this can be 'best hotel ever' as someone mentions!

Dear Guest,
It is saddening that your stay with us was not up to what you expected. Please accept my apologies for the disappointments you experienced and especially in the maintenance failures!

All your comments and photos have been very carefully checked and necessary maintenance work have been attended to already. Your comments on food and service also have been taken up very constructively and they are discussed at ongoing trainings.

To add variety to dining we have introduced seafood to the experience and also the additional cocktail bar on the Veranda features cocktails daily at sunset.

Once again my apologies and hope that this alone will not stop you from coming back and we would like to invite you to experience some of our sister hotels in Negombo and around the Island on your next visit.

Yours Sincerely,
General Manager

We booked 14 nights at the Jetwing Lighthouse based on the reviews on this website. I can guarantee that the reviews are not wrong. What’s strange is that the website pictures do not do this place justice. Feel free to browse my pictures on here to get a true feeling.

The best things about this hotel are:
• The location
• The facilities
• The food
• The staff

The service is what really makes this hotel standout. From the receptionists greeting you with a drink of your choice, to the friendliest waiters, to the chefs who are happy to teach you a few things in the kitchen. Everyone in the hotel made it their mission to ensure that we had the best time. I believe this always comes from management and Wester and his team do a great job.

The rooms are superbly decorated and feel very rustic. Most of the rooms have beautiful views out to sea from the balcony and are expertly cleaned and turned down every day.

The pools are amazing and the spa was somewhere we visited throughout our stay and was well worth every penny.

The food was a big highlight and we got to eat in both the Cinnamon Rooms and Cardamon Cafe throughout the fortnight. If you must eat inside try the Cinnamon Rooms because downstairs lacks a little atmosphere. However, eating outside is amazing atmospheric and romantic.

If there was a downside to the hotel it was that it was quiet because we weren’t there in the high season. Some, therefore, may get bored. It would be good if the hotel put on things to help people meet.

We would love to go back. Given that there are other Jetwing hotels I think it would be better if they allowed you to create a package so that you could see the country. They were accommodating enough to let us transfer around to other hotels for a couple of the days but they need to take more advantage of this.

Do not hesitate to stay at this hotel.
