“Fantastic hotel, thoroughly recommended”
Reviewed August 23, 2009

We stayed here for the last two nights of a two week tour with Kuoni. The hotel is immediately welcoming with efficient staff. We were shown to the veranda and given drinks and cold towels while our paperwork was done, and greeted personally by the manager. Our room was large, full of character, clean and very comfortable, and we had complimentary wine and fruit, as well as water which is standard. The bathroom is fantastic! We ate dinner twice there, the fixed price menu (four courses plus tea or coffee) was excellent and very good value. We also had afternoon tea on the veranda with cakes and scones (scones were a bit odd but still nice). There are two pools, an excellent if expensive spa, a fitness suite which we didn't use but looked good, and access onto a beach which is lovely for walking and watching the sunset. Unfortunately there was no swimming there in the summer months as the sea is too rough. It was a wonderful place to finish our tour, and everything we had hoped.

We stayed at the Lighthouse in Galle for two nights on our honeymoon...it was magical from the time we arrived. The reception has magnificent views of the sea and the rocks, with tastefully arranged seating spaces. The outside dining area is also overlooking the sea, and we enjoyed most of our meals there.
The resort has two pools - and each one is unique. The rocks, the beach and the greenery make a perfect setting for a quiet romantic getaway.
The spa was huge and the couples massage very relaxing.
But the best thing about the Lighthouse are the amazingly large and tastefully done up rooms. We stayed in a room with a balcony overlooking the sea. There was a kingsized bed and interesting objects d'art like a map of Galle and a latern. The dressing and bathing area was enormous...with a separate bathtug, loo area and shower area.

All-in-all we liked the Lighthouse much much more than any of the Taj properties in Sri Lanka (Samudra, Bentota).

just got back from the lighthouse hotel and loved it. the staff were friendly and helpful and the room was amazing. There are two resturants on the hotel site both are very good, all the food we ate at this hotel was really nice. The only drawback is having to get in a tuk tuk to visit the fort or galle town itself, but this isn't a major problem as travelling in tuk tuks is so cheap. I would recommend this hotel to anyone it is lovely

Nice hotel serviced by a team of poorly trained personnel. Restaurant was so slow (a minimum of 20 min between each serving), by the time the dessert came my daughter was fast asleep on her chair. It appeared that a new computer system was just installed and all service personnel were too busy with it.

We had our wedding here and stayed for our wedding night. The room was beautiful overlooking the ocean. Very clean and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
The restaurant was good and we had a meal sitting outside.
Food was good but not great.

Our third trip to Sri Lanka over the years but our first to the wonderful Lighthouse Hotel.
Having previously stayed at the Taj Exotica, and The Eden hotel I would say the Lighthouse without doubt for me was my favourite.
There were only two downsides to our visit the main being that we were both eaten alive by sandflies, (the result of sitting too close to the greenery at the bottom pool) my husband suffered really badly having to have the local docter, I would say though that the hotel staff were always asking how we were, and the manager took a keen interest in our welfare.
The other downside was that there was nowhere within walking distance to the hotel to eat for a change. We did try the (local restaurant opposite) apart from being cheap drink the food was rubbish.
The Hotel was first class and all the staff provided a first class service, the food in all restaurants was first class.
I can beat the previous comments about the trip back to the airport, we were picked up from the hotel at 0330 and arrived at the drop off point at the airport at 0515. A white knuckle ride indeed which left us both speechless the whole journey.
Well done to the Lighthouse Hotel

Just back from the Lighthouse which we thought was wonderful. Wanted somewhere special for a big anniversary and it provided that for us. Got a cheap deal through Kuoni - don't know about value for money if you pay the hotel's standard prices.
Rooms are elegant with wooden furniture and a spacious bathroom including shower and separate bath. All rooms have sea and pool view and balcony. Your room is cleaned in the morning and the bed turned down at night with frangipane flowers left on the sheets. Bottled water is provided and replenished twice a day.
Food was excellent, breakfast a huge buffet with Sri Lankan and European food, lovely fresh pastries, some food like omelettes and egg hoppers cooked to order too. Dinner also very good, we only ate in the Cardamom club which is considerably cheaper than the Cinnamon Room. The a la carte includes European and Sri Lankan food. Prices in the Cardamom Club start at about 700 rupees for a main course (less than £5), though much more for steak, king prawns etc. We thought the food was reasonably priced for the quality, the fact that it is in a posh hotel, and you can eat it on the verandah watching the stars and the waves crashing on the rocks. We tried the buffet once - expensive (2000 rupees) but again very good and well worth it if you want to try lots of things. It was quiet during our visit so mostly no buffet.
Drinks are a bit pricey - cheapest alcohol is 500 rupees (about £3) for a big (over a pint) bottle of lager, wine starts at £20 for a bottle.
Not many restaurants nearby - there is a place almost opposite which calls itself a buffet restaurant, no buffet when we went but had decent and cheap curry from the menu, drinks are considerably cheaper than the Lighthouse. There is also a pizza restaurant and takeaway about five mins walk in the other direction, otherwise it is easy to get to Galle or Unawatuna for a wider choice of restaurants.
There are 2 or three dogs which hang around the terrace bit of the restaurant and by the pool, we found them to be well-behaved and not a problem, some guests enjoyed feeding them.
2 biggish pools, one an infinity-style pool though as there are trees between it and the sea the infinity effect doesn't quite work! A few hammocks as well as sunbeds. There are a few palm squirrels (which look like chipmunks) scampering around the grounds. The sea is quite rocky so not ideal for swimming, it was also quite rough during our visit due to the monsoon, we swam in the pools and took pleasant walks along the beach where you can pick up seashells. Have seen others saying the beach is dirty but we found it ok.
The hotel has a naturalist called Anoma, you can arrange to do a free seashore walk, where he shows you some of the wildlife, we saw mudskippers, hermit crabs, sea urchins, a sea cucumber and even a moray eel. We wouldn't have noticed or recognised all these things on our own. He can also take you on a number of other trips eg to Yala or Ude Walewa which to be honest are on the expensive side. We did one to Kottawa rainforest which is nearby, it was just for a couple of hours but we really enjoyed it and saw monkeys and giant squirrels among other things. If you want to go further afield I would recommend finding a driver/guide before you come (you can contact me if you need a recommendation) as there are no beach boys offering tours here, or at least there weren't on our visit.
Galle is not far away (5 mins - we paid 150 rupees for a tuktuk) or a strenuous walk. We enjoyed strolling on the walls at dusk (with everyone else) and had a cheap, tasty curry in Anura's restaurant in the Fort, tiny simple place but we liked it.
Enjoyed going to Unawatuna beach which is calmer for swimming and has many restaurants, about 15 mins in a tuktuk.
The hotel's taxi and tuktuk service is pricey so we went out on to the road and negotiated with passing tuktuks.
It took 3 hours from the airport in daytime (though driver drove like a madman) and 2 1/2 hours to get back in the middle of the night - transfer time did not allow for this though so we were at the airport for ages.
If you want you can pay for nice little extras like a flower-filled bath or your own seafood barbecue right on the beach, or high tea in your room or on the terrace.
There is free computers with internet access in the business centre, also wi-fi though we didn't test that. There is a gym and tennis court, also some books (mostly in German) in the gym. You have to find these things out for yourself though as they didn't tell us!
