We stayed only one night and wish we had stayed one more.
We arrived at 4am and were collected from the airport by the hotel's transfer which cost 130us dollars. I had invedtigated a little on forums and they were suggesting it might cost around 80 to pick up a random taxi from the airport to Galle. We decided to pay the extra to use the hotel's service and we are glad we did. The car was very comfortable with cushions for sleeping and cold towels and bottles of water on arrival. The driver Mr Guyan was an excellent driver and we used him two more times, once when we weren't even staying at the hotel anymore.
As we arrived so early, arriving at the hotel at around 7.30am obviously the room was not ready for us. We knew this would be the case and planned on sleeping by the pool. This would be my only advice if you are planning on doing the same...sleeping by the pool is not really possible as the only loungers that were shaded were by the main building's wall which is also right beside the kitchen. We were woken by the noise of plates and machinery from the kitchen, the staff talking to each other and there is also a water heater or something right beside those beds that whirrs up every few minutes waking us whenever we fell asleep. These things did not bother us later in the day or the next day it was simply that we were sleep deprived having not slept at all on the flight over and desperate to sleep. That said, the staff at the hotel were extremely apologetic that they did not have a room to give us immediately and gave us the next available room that was checked out at around 11 for us to sleep in before our room was ready at 1pm. The manager gave us breakfast without charge to apologise, even though it was not their fault at all. This level of service was the same throughout our stay, nothing was too much trouble.

The room we had was a standard, cheapest room and opened out onto the pool which we liked. These rooms do not have any art deco features however unlike the rooms in the main building.
I agree with a previous review that the rooms could be softened with a rug as the floor is a little harsh looking.

The breakfast was excellent, the best we had in all sri lanka. We ate dinner there and the sri lankan curry was deliciious.

The drinks menu was a little strange - in that there wasn't one! When we had dinner we were verbally told we could have beer, wine (they had only one bottle on offer) or gin and tonic. I dont know if there are licensing reasons for this but I would like a drinks menu with a wider selection, perhaps some cocktails. We went to the Amangalle for cocktails at sunset as the hotel did not have any on offer.

I also agree that the pool area could be improved. The pool itself is nice but the area a little shabby. The loungers are not the kind I would expect from a top level hotel - the cushions are plastic and the towels were faded and not big enough to cover the mattress which got very hot and sticky in the sun. The very top hotels I have stayed in provide huge beach towels and super thick and soft cotton (or another material not plastic) mattresses.
I also would like to see them make more of the art deco thing. I chose the hotel purely because I love all things deco. There is a small shop inside the hotel selling jewellry. i would like it to sell deco things. There is a poster shop in Galle selling old advertising posters for Sri Lanka I would definitely have bought some art deco posters or post cards, like the ones in the rooms had the hotel had them and may even have bought some jewellry if had been deco themed.
These are all minor points for improvement as I see them. Overall it was a wonderful hotel and I loved it.

We stayed here for 6 nights in April at the end of an 18 day holiday in Sri Lanka.

The best points about the hotel are the food, the pool and the friendly staff.

Despite claims made about chefs in other restaurants in Galle, we think the best chef is definitely working at Deco. The vegetarian Sri Lankan curry was superb. It's a good menu that caters for a wide range of tastes. Get a table outside by reception or at the front if you can.

The small pool is a wonderful haven for a daily swim and the staff were lovely, very attentive and friendly.

We had a suite with a balcony overlooking the front of the hotel. The room itself was quite big, though not really a "suite" as such. Wi-fi connection was good throughout our stay and the room has satellite tv and a DVD player.

With a family of 4 - the hotel was an excellent base for the Galle and Unawatuna area. The services was excellent, and the staff very friendly. Quality of food variable - excellent breakfast - could have wished for a bit more Sri Lanken fare on the main menu.

Very clean, rooms very comfortable...

Stayed here at the beginning of April 2013. Had a brilliant stay at Deco on 44, it is such a stylish hotel in a superb location- it is actually inside the Galle fortress! Very clean and comfortable rooms. The food and service offered at this hotel are both great. Deco on 44 also has a very friendly and cheerful atmosphere and is the perfect base for exploring the beautiful fortress town.

We were upgraded to a suite so may be biased, but this is a superb little hotel in the beautiful fort city of Galle. The art-deco furnishings are beautifully done and everything is comfortable and convenient. Make sure you try the lemongrass infused seafood soup - the best soup we're ever tasted. Two Sri Lanka singers entertained at dinner - they are so-so when idiot tourists request western songs, but get them to do a Sri Lanka song (they did a calypso fishing song for us) and they are just brilliant! Highly recommended!

Small yet promising environment. no one would expect somenting like that inside the famous Galle Fort. large rooms gave lots of freedom to us, eventhough the small space in land extent the opend windows offered snek peak to the fort life.
hospitality was greate.
space was the issue for me parking was a real problem, but we managed somehow.
pool & refurbished old house is a nice combination. food was ok but there is a long way they have to develop, next time i go to Galle i would definitely stay there.

I stayed here recently with a friend. We both really enjoyed our stay. The staff were very friendly and couldn't help us enough. The decor is lovely - if you enjoy Art Deco it really is quite impressive. The rooms themselves were very pleasant and the pool is small but delightful. While we were there we did a cooking class offered by the hotel which we enjoyed. The hotel can arrange a whole lot of trips for you (it is cheaper to arrange then yourself, though). It is in an excellent location in the middle of the fort. I would recommend this to anyone going to Galle.
