We stayed only one night and wish we had stayed one more.
We arrived at 4am and were collected from the airport by the hotel's transfer which cost 130us dollars. I had invedtigated a little on forums and they were suggesting it might cost around 80 to pick up a random taxi from the airport to Galle. We decided to pay the extra to use the hotel's service and we are glad we did. The car was very comfortable with cushions for sleeping and cold towels and bottles of water on arrival. The driver Mr Guyan was an excellent driver and we used him two more times, once when we weren't even staying at the hotel anymore.
As we arrived so early, arriving at the hotel at around 7.30am obviously the room was not ready for us. We knew this would be the case and planned on sleeping by the pool. This would be my only advice if you are planning on doing the same...sleeping by the pool is not really possible as the only loungers that were shaded were by the main building's wall which is also right beside the kitchen. We were woken by the noise of plates and machinery from the kitchen, the staff talking to each other and there is also a water heater or something right beside those beds that whirrs up every few minutes waking us whenever we fell asleep. These things did not bother us later in the day or the next day it was simply that we were sleep deprived having not slept at all on the flight over and desperate to sleep. That said, the staff at the hotel were extremely apologetic that they did not have a room to give us immediately and gave us the next available room that was checked out at around 11 for us to sleep in before our room was ready at 1pm. The manager gave us breakfast without charge to apologise, even though it was not their fault at all. This level of service was the same throughout our stay, nothing was too much trouble.
The room we had was a standard, cheapest room and opened out onto the pool which we liked. These rooms do not have any art deco features however unlike the rooms in the main building.
I agree with a previous review that the rooms could be softened with a rug as the floor is a little harsh looking.
The breakfast was excellent, the best we had in all sri lanka. We ate dinner there and the sri lankan curry was deliciious.
The drinks menu was a little strange - in that there wasn't one! When we had dinner we were verbally told we could have beer, wine (they had only one bottle on offer) or gin and tonic. I dont know if there are licensing reasons for this but I would like a drinks menu with a wider selection, perhaps some cocktails. We went to the Amangalle for cocktails at sunset as the hotel did not have any on offer.
I also agree that the pool area could be improved. The pool itself is nice but the area a little shabby. The loungers are not the kind I would expect from a top level hotel - the cushions are plastic and the towels were faded and not big enough to cover the mattress which got very hot and sticky in the sun. The very top hotels I have stayed in provide huge beach towels and super thick and soft cotton (or another material not plastic) mattresses.
I also would like to see them make more of the art deco thing. I chose the hotel purely because I love all things deco. There is a small shop inside the hotel selling jewellry. i would like it to sell deco things. There is a poster shop in Galle selling old advertising posters for Sri Lanka I would definitely have bought some art deco posters or post cards, like the ones in the rooms had the hotel had them and may even have bought some jewellry if had been deco themed.
These are all minor points for improvement as I see them. Overall it was a wonderful hotel and I loved it.
